Top 5 Tips to Improve Your Aim in CSGO

How do you improve your aim? Find some answers here!

CS:GO is easily the biggest competitive FPS in the world, which means that thousands and thousands of players are actively trying to reach the next level by improving several aspects of their gameplay. Although it can be debated, a good aim is one of the most important skills to have when playing not only CS:GO, but any FPS.

Given that, I’ve compiled 5 tips that any player can use to improve his aim, regardless of his/her skill level or even game (although different shooting mechanics might come into play and require a bit of getting used to).

Aim Lab

One of the best resources to practice your aim is actually outside of CS:GO itself. There’s another game called “Aim Lab”, which you can get for free on Steam. A group of players made an amazing application where you can practice your aim with different settings matching different games, ranging from competitive ones like CS:GO to more casual ones like Fortnite (I’m joking, I’m joking!).

Make sure you use the exact same sensitivity as in the game you’re practicing for, as using a different one makes no sense since you would need to get used to different sensitivity values every time you load each game.

Make sure to go to the settings the first time you launch the game to configure it exactly to your likings. After that, just look around and try different modes - you can even compete on international leaderboards!

Crosshair Position

Crosshair position is a critical skill to dominate in CS:GO. The closer you can have your crosshair to the position where the head of your opponents are, the less you’ll have to adjust and the faster you’ll kill them - otherwise, you’ll die with a quicker headshot. Although it requires some getting used to, the more you force yourself to always have the crosshair at head-level, the more natural it will become. New players will find themselves looking at the floor most of the time and having to adjust the aim every time they see their opponent.

This is especially true around corners. Make sure you have your crosshair at the right level as there could be an enemy on the other side. Also, it allows you to easily pre-fire that spot if it is a common one to hold. It is as easy as it sounds - the less you have to adjust when you find an opponent in your field of view, the higher your chances of killing him.

Maps (Deathmatch and Prefire)

There are countless maps available in the Steam Workshop, all made by the community and some used daily by countless players trying to get better. These range from simple maps where you shoot moving or fixed bots like AimBotz, or others where you can practice pre-aim, movement, utility usage, etc.

For this particular purpose - improving your aim - maps like Training_aim_csgo2 are your best bet. Not only you’ll be training your aim, but you’ll also be improving your reflexes, time of reaction, and snap aim.

I’ve recently made an article that focuses on the Top 5 Aim Maps in CS:GO. In there, you’ll find those which are the best maps to improve your aim, as well as download links and a brief overview of each one.

Sensitivity

Sensitivity is how much your crosshair moves relatively to the amount you movement you do with your mouse. A higher sensitivity will make your crosshair move more with less distance traveled by your mouse and a lower sensitivity does the opposite. Although a lot of players use lower sensitivity, it definitely does not mean it is better - in fact, you have a tier 1 professional player, Özgür "woxic" Eker from Cloud9, who’s known for having a ridiculously high sensitivity while mainly playing with the AWP.

The most important aspect regarding sensitivity is consistency. You’ll never get used to something if you don’t take your time with one value. Sure, it’s ok to try and make adjustments so you can find something that you’re truly comfortable with, but in the end, time and practice are the keys. There are a lot of players that as soon as they miss an easy shot, instantly change their sensitivity, most of the time mid-game. All that does is making you have to get used to a new value during an ongoing match.

Choose one value that you feel comfortable with from the beginning and STICK to it!

Material

Although not directly related to improving your aim, your material can make a lot of difference, mainly your mouse and your mousepad. This is something that once again goes down to personal preference, one mouse shape can’t be better than the other as different people have different tastes. What makes a lot of difference is the sensors used by those mice that are available on the market. Most of the time it’s why some “gaming mice” is more expensive than others. Also, using mice that are a few years old can also have an impact, as technology is always evolving. When shopping for a new “hand weapon”, make sure to do your research and understand the pros and cons of each type of sensor.

Another thing that makes a difference is the surface where you use your mouse. Avoid using it directly on the table’s surface, especially if it is made of glass, as sensors generally don’t work well there due to reflections. Using a mousepad is the way to go! Generally, mousepads are one thing that players use for a long time before buying a new one, sometimes even more time than they should. As with any other object what we use daily, it is subject to getting beat up and old, its surface will get harsher and eventually makes the sensor not work at 100%. Worse, since it’s gradual, you might not even notice, but as soon as you get a new one… it’s a night and day difference! Also, make sure to wash it from time to time, as dirt and sweat aren’t exactly good for it as well.
