An Overview of the Llamarama Event for Rocket League

Get the full scoop of the Llamarama event, as well as what it means for the future of Rocket League!

So… Rocket League has gone free to play! As of late, we’ve seen huge spikes in our playerbase, with our peak concurrent players quickly approaching two million, a number shattering previous records. This is yet one aspect of the brand recognition Epic Games has brought to Rocket League, and they have followed it up with one of the most brilliant first steps after launching free to play… the LlamaRama Event!

The LlamaRama Breakdown

This event gives a series of challenges to new Rocket League players and ones of old, unlocking various Fortnite items that you then must wear while completing the next challenge. Not only is this strategy brilliant for promoting their current game, Fortnite, by forcing players to wear the items for free marketing, but something not as apparent for those of us who have never dared to touch Fortnite, it may not be known that they are doing the same for Rocket League. Specifically, they are giving in-game Fortnite rewards that are Rocket League related for completing these same challenges through your Epic Games account. This is a fantastic first step for Epic Games, pushing Rocket League to new highs while helping to boost their current portfolio simultaneously.

As for the specifics of the rewards, below will be a detailed breakdown of what the event rewards are for players for both games as well as what the Fortnite players can earn! The first photo features all of the Rocket League items, and the second picture is a breakdown of the Fortnite rewards!

Challenge 1: Play an Online Match in any Playlist
RL (Rocket League) Reward: Llama Flyer Antenna
Fortnite Reward: Rocket League Spray

Challenge 2: Win 1 Online Match in Casual with the Llama Antenna
RL Reward: Top Llama Topper
Fortnite Reward: Holodata Drop Contrail

Challenge 3: Get 5 goals, saves, or assists with the Llama Topper
RL Reward: Loot Llama Octane Decal
Fortnite Reward: Rocket League Emoticon

Challenge 4: Win 5 Online Matches in any Playlist with the Llama Decal (octane)
RL Reward: Llama Wheels
Fortnite Reward: Rocket Groove Music Track

Challenge 5: Get MVP in any Online Match with the Llama Wheels
RL Reward: Battle Bus + Battle Balloon Antenna, Battle Bus Wheels, and Battle Bus Engine Audio
Fortnite Reward: Octane RL Backbling + Style variant

What this means for the future of Epic Games and Rocket League:

Not only has this event sparked the Fortnite playerbase to come check out Rocket League, but it has sparked Rocket League competitive players to take Epic’s strategy, albeit inadvertently, to the next level. Just recently, G2 and NRG in The Grid, one of the new aspects of the competitive scene in Rocket League, because of their already locked in positions in the playoffs, all decided to equip the Battle Bus and battle it out (pun intended) in a best of seven. This exposure can only be good for the two games, and additionally shows the highest level of Rocket League somewhat embracing the merger of Psyonix and Epic Games, and only helps to build popularity for both.

However, it’s my belief that this is but one step in this exciting direction for Rocket League as an esport. Specifically, with the changes in format spicing things up, I believe that the sizeable prize pools and viewerbase the Fortnite tournaments have had in the past may translate directly to the same for Rocket League, helping to take them to new highs and perhaps even directly funneling prize money to the new format we have all come to love. In addition, I doubt that this will be the only event that Epic Games puts on that accomplishes similar goals, and I think that Epic Games will only help take the game to the next level. From this merger, although some may be making jokes about Fortnite and may have quarrels with the servers dealing with new traffic, or even the rumored better state of Rocket League when launched through the Epic Games Launcher as opposed to Steam, this can only mean good things for the sheer publicity and attention the game is getting that all the long-time fans believe is far overdue. The future is bright for our game, and I myself am excited to see the changes and progress we will make going forward.
