It's always exciting to watch new talent burst on to the scene in any sporting world, and this season NA LCS viewers are very enthusiastic about Johnson "Johnsun" Nguyen. With a solo-queue record that many aspiring players can only dream of and a hunger for victory, it's already clear to see that the young bot-laner has the potential to dominate the scene in the years to come; but what are his thoughts on all of this? Well, read on to see the discussion I had with Johnsun about the Spring Split, playing on Dignitas and the road ahead!

Let’s get to know Johnsun a little bit- aside from League of Legends, name a game:

a) You’ve invested countless hours into

Johnsun: Hmm… I’ve played Fortnite for a fair bit with my friends on the side when I needed to take a break from League!

b) You wish you could spend more time on

Johnsun: I’m not sure; to be honest, I don’t play a lot of different games in my time off.

c) You treasure as a childhood gem

Johnsun: Probably Legend of Zelda.

What has it meant to you to spend the 2020 Spring Split with Dignitas on our official return to the LCS?

Johnsun: It’s kind of surprising! It was pretty good, and I think I performed a lot better than many people expected of me, coming from solo queue. I got to learn a lot playing with my teammates; every player on the team helped me grow as an individual. It was great because I could focus on playing my laning phase better and transitioning into the mid game.

In an interview I had with Aphromoo before the Split started, he said he was really enjoying playing with you as DIG’s dynamic duo; how has it been spending your rookie debut with such a prolific player?

Johnsun: It’s really good. He’s given me a lot of information on how I should play the game, laning-phase wise and taught me stuff I never expected to know about. He’s also pretty funny, so we just have a good time.

Speaking of your rookie debut, how did you feel about your individual performances during this last Split?

Johnsun: I think there were definitely some games I could’ve played better... Overall I’d give myself a 6 or 7 out of 10.

Is there one game in particular that stood out to you over the ~12 weeks of the season or are you more focused on the season as a whole?

Johnsun: I’m more focused on my performance over the entire season… Individual games for me are kind of whatever, you need to show that you can be consistent.

At the end of Spring 2019, the difference between 2nd and 8th place was 8 wins, but this year around those same rankings were only set apart by 3 wins; can you give us your thoughts on the competition in the NA LCS right now?

Johnsun: To be honest, I don’t want to say the word kryptonite, but it’s as if every team is their own worst problem besides Cloud9. TSM has problems, Team Liquid obviously has problems, and we have our own problems too. There are definitely some teams that are getting pretty good, but they haven’t given the results yet because of their own general problems.

You played 8 different champions across all your games this season, the second highest out of any bottom laner in the league, what are your thoughts on the current state of Bottom Lane?

Johnsun: Every patch there are pretty much 2 or 3 Champions that you should play if you want success in the LCS. In the beginning, obviously, it was Aphelios, Senna and Miss Fortune. Later on, Varus started to come in but overall you just needed to focus on people that were both bullies in laning phase and still scaled later on.

Alright Johnsun let’s set our sights towards the future; what are your plans for the offseason?

Johnsun: I’m just trying to chill and spend some time with my friends- during the season I kind of don’t do anything other than play League haha.

To round out this interview, if you had to play in any other DIG team (CS:GO, Rocket League, Smash) competitively, which would it be and why?

Johnsun: I think CS:GO… I don’t really follow CS:GO but I’ve heard that the team is really good, maybe I can get carried!
