Inside Fortnite’s ever changing loot pool are many valuable items that we often take for granted, fail to utilize, or simply forget about entirely. With Fortnite’s weekly updates and new Seasons, keeping up with what items are available in the game can be challenging. Each item featured in this article has been in the game for several seasons, some even since Chapter 1! While there are other items we tend to choose over the ones about to be mentioned, all of these underrated items serve a great purpose, and there’s a reason why we still find them in the game. Let’s get into it!
There are 62 Campfires on the island, and for good reason. We all have experienced this scenario: You’re frantically running in the storm, carrying no heals, and sprinting to get to safety before it’s too late. Just when your situation couldn’t seem more dismal, you stumble upon a Campfire exactly when you need it the most. By lighting it in exchange for a small amount of wood, the Campfire will burn for 25 seconds, restoring your health by two ticks per second. Adding more wood will reignite it so you can gain even more health. Take a minute to memorize where Campfires are located on your loot path; it might be the difference between life and elimination.
Fireflies can be found in ambient clusters of 4-8 in the wild and can also be found in chests in jars of 3. But don’t underestimate these little flickering light glimmers as they pack a powerful punch. When hit directly on a player, they cause 40 damage to their shield and 15 DPS to health afterward. These fiery insects are helpful, especially when facing opponents building in wood and reaching high altitudes. One Firefly Jar can easily take down an entire structure and any players inside. Have you ever had a team chasing you to circle while still in the storm? Throw a Firefly Jar or two back in their direction and see how fast their health diminishes when combined with Storm damage.
Easily found near Motorboats and other bodies of water, Fishing Rods are helpful for more than just fishing. Use them to grab loot from eliminated players and even to grab downed teammates and opponents themselves! Harpoon guns were a huge part of the meta during competitive play in Chapter 2, with players able to snag materials around them without leaving the safety of their box. While often forgotten, Fishing Rods can accomplish the same task with ease!
Introduced in Chapter 1, the Grenade is an “OG” Fortnite item that is still just as effective in today’s gameplay as in the old days. By causing 100 damage on impact, these explosives can easily down a player or more when aimed near multiple. They can also quickly destroy builds and are perfect for throwing inside buildings where players may be hiding or present. Since Grenades are plentiful in chests and as floor loot, you may stumble upon them when first landing from the Battle Bus. Throw them toward the action and see if you can catch an unshielded player off-guard. There’s something immensely satisfying about getting a Grenade elimination. Give it a try. You’ll thank us later.
While fewer animals are found on the island now, some animals, such as chickens, can still be found pecking around. Chickens tend to pick at players, so beat them to the punch by eliminating them first and making use of the Meat they drop. When animals are eliminated by players or by the storm, they drop Meat which heals your health by 15HP. Bandages also heal you for 15HP, but Meat is a more effective healing item to carry as it works much quicker and can be used to reach full HP, not just up to 75%.
At gas stations throughout the map, Mending Machines sell powerful heal items and a Patch-Up service that can restore your health in seconds. In exchange for gold, you can purchase Med Kits, shields, and more, depending upon the machine. When you are close to a Mending Machine, they become marked on the map with a first-aid cross symbol. These are the perfect pit stops for stocking back up on shields or restoring your health instantly.
When Motorboats entered the game in Chapter 2, Season 1, they completely changed how we navigated around the island. With space for all four players on a squad, these zippy little vessels are perfect for quick movements to the next zone. Unlike other vehicles, they can shoot missiles that cause 35 damage to players. Driving and boosting directly into players will send them upwards and can cause significant fall damage. The current Fortnite island has over 40 Motorboats around the map, always found near water sources, so finding one should be a breeze.
Often hidden in plain view, Produce Boxes contain healing items that are just what you need when you’re in a pinch. Usually found inside buildings, on shelves, or the ground, these boxes contain vegetables, such as Cabbage, that can give you health over time, making them practical for combating Storm damage. Next time you find yourself caught in the Storm, don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for these tiny boxes of blessings.
With 10 of these found on the island, slurp trucks are undoubtedly the fastest way for your squad to gain total health and shield. Pickaxing the Slurp Truck will destroy it and give you and your teammates up to 100 health or shield each. Pick your drop spot based on the location of these trucks, and you are sure to set yourself up for a successful game by reaching full shield before anyone else. Be aware that not all silver trucks contain the healing power of Slurp, so be sure to look for the Slurp Co. logo before you start pickaxing away.
Inspired by real-life drones manufactured by Amazon, which deliver items bought online to their customers, we often forget about these little guys buzzing around certain POIs. Named locations on the map with gold lettering indicate the presence of these Loot Carriers. They fly at a slow speed, making them simple to shoot down. The type of loot they hold tends to vary based on the season, but most often, they will drop a gun, ammo, and some sort of healing item. Perhaps you’re the type of player that likes to have a little fun? Build up to the drone, climb on top, and use it to ride around the POI. You can also emote on the drones, making for some clip-worthy moments. Have you tried Post Party yet? Fortnite’s latest app integration allows you to instantly record clips of your gameplay from your gaming device and have them sent directly to your phone. Content creation has never been easier!
We hope this refreshed your memory on some items you may have overlooked or forgotten about in the game of Fortnite. Everything mentioned in this article is subject to change, but the message remains the same. Always be aware of your surroundings in the game and take the time to educate yourself on the items available. You never know when they might be the saving grace you need to earn that coveted Victory Royale!
