A Beginner's Guide to Fortnite’s Rocket Racing Mode

Dive into the adrenaline-filled and thrilling world of Fortnite Rocket Racing. Race to your limits in the exotic cars fighting for every bit of speed you can get.

Rocket Racing was introduced as an exciting mode in Fortnite Chapter 5, alongside Lego Fortnite (https://dignitas.gg/articles/building-block-bliss-a-beginners-guide-to-lego-fortnite). While you could always drive cars in Battle Royale, Rocket Racing took it to the next level by adding a competitive arcade spin to it. Developed by the makers of Rocket League, Rocket Racing combines Fortnite and Rocket League to create an arcade-style racer full of thrilling and addicting races.

Since its release, Rocket Racing has enveloped players in its meticulous and extravagant tracks. In this article, we will be going over everything to know about Rocket Racing, the fun tracks, thrilling sense of speed, and a library of exotic cars.

What is Rocket Racing?

Rocket Racing is a Fortnite Creative game mode created by Psyonix (the developers of Rocket League). It’s a high-speed arcade racer, where you drift, slide, jump, and boost across the track to be the first to cross the finish line.

You can accelerate across the track, fly, or drive on walls to get every bit of speed you need to get that win. Choose from a wide library of tracks that you unlock by ranking up.

On top of that, if you are an avid Rocket League fan, you can use your Rocket League cars in this game mode. Whether you like the classic Octane or prefer the sportier Dominus, you can race in the car of your choice.

Rocket Racing Mechanics, Explained - How to Gain Speed

At first glance, Rocket Racing is a straightforward arcade racer, but it has its own set of intricacies. In order to cross the checkered flag first, you have to understand how to get there as fast as possible.

Much like other arcade racers, the best way to gain speed is to drift. You should be drifting any chance you get. When you exit the drift, you get a boost of speed. The longer the drift the more boost you get. Drifting also gradually charges your turbometer. Once charged, you can press a button to launch yourself at extreme speeds. Turbo can be the push you need to cross that line before the other racers, so use it wisely. When you use the turbo, there is a slight window where you can press the same button to get a bonus turbo.

Drift and Turbo might be the best way to gain speed in general, but in order to win you need every bit of advantage you can get.

You can also tap a button to launch yourself in the air and then hold the button to boost vertically in the air. However, this will come at the cost of speed so only use it to dodge obstacles or climb onto elevations.

Rocket Racing’s tracks are not strict, there are shortcuts you can use to save even tenths of a second. However, they are not obvious, and you have to be creative to find them.

On the tracks, you will find hollow neon orange boxes that you need to avoid. These are obstacles, and hitting them will make you slower. You can jump, steer, or flip on walls to avoid these.

The most important thing to master is the launch at the start of the race. Gaining an early lead will make winning the race a lot easier. It’s all about timing, so practice a lot and you will get used to it.

Fortnite Rocket Racing Ranked System

Even though Rocket Racing was introduced as a casual game mode for when you are bored of Battle Royale, it quickly became very competitive. With players, finding new mechanics, and shortcuts to finish as quickly as possible.

Thankfully, Rocket Racing has a ranked mode in which you can keep ranking up and race against better players. As you rank up, you also unlock newer, and harder tracks. So, not only are you up against better racers but also more difficult tracks. But, before you start your grind to the top of the Rocket Racing ranks, let’s first understand how the ranked system works.

Fortnite Rocket Racing Ranks

Rocket Racing has the same ladder of ranks as Fortnite’s Battle Royale Ranked System (https://dignitas.gg/articles/a-complete-guide-to-fortnites-new-ranked-system). It goes from Bronze all the way up to Unreal at the top of the ladder. From Bronze to Diamond, all the ranks are distributed into three divisions – I, II, and III. Elite, Champion, and Unreal are the exceptions. Here are all Rocket Racing ranks in order.

  • Bronze I, II, III
  • Silver I, II, III
  • Gold I, II, III
  • Platinum I, II, III
  • Diamond I, II, III
  • Elite
  • Champion
  • Unreal

How To Rank Up in Fortnite Rocket Racing

To climb from one rank to another, you need to gain 100 points, or a percentage in Fortnite’s case. Winning races gets you the most points and is the fastest way to rank up. Even if you don’t win, placing higher in the rankings also grants you points. Ideally, you should be in the top 4 to rank up efficiently.

As you climb the ladder, it becomes harder to rank up as you get fewer percentages after races. For example, ranking up from Silver III to Gold might only take winning 2-3 races, but ranking up from Champion to Unreal will take substantially more.

The rule of thumb is to try to win races or place in the top 4. Follow this and you will make it to the top of the ladder. Once you reach Unreal, you can’t be demoted.

Conclusion

Rocket Racing has become one of the most thrilling and addicting game modes in Fortnite. The arcade-style racing, paired with great mechanics, an exhilarating sense of speed, and a wide library of tracks keep you hooked for hours. It might take a bit of time to get good at the game for beginners but keep practicing and you will be winning races in no time.
