A Guide to Champions that Synergize Well - League of Legends

Do you want to play Champions that have incredible synergy with your duo? Here are five pairs of champions with kits that fit like a key and lock.

As League of Legends is becoming a more and more perfect team game, many Champions have kits that can be fully maximized with other Champion’s kits. If the right Champions are picked together, amazing combos can be done with just enough coordination.

Twitch, the Plague Rat, and Yuumi, the Magical Cat

The Twitch and Yuumi combo has the potential to single-handedly carry a game. What makes this combo so powerful is Yuumi’s ability to turn invisible with Twitch during his Q, Ambush. Because Yuumi and Twitch can be invisible, the opposing team has an added threat they must worry about. This pair can strike fear in the enemy team, even when they are halfway across the map. Not only does the element of surprise catch enemies off-guard, but because of Yuumi’s various Best Friend buffs, Twitch will gain additional on-hit magic damage, healing on-hit, bonus magic resist, and armor. With the recent changes in Yuumi’s R, Final Chapter, granting additional magic resist and armor to her Best Friend upon cast, it will be extremely hard to kill Yuumi’s best friend during the duration of her ultimate. Paired with Yuumi’s insane healing capabilities, Twitch, an extremely vulnerable marksman-assassin, becomes an unkillable shredder.

Yasuo, the Unforgiven, and Zac, the Secret Weapon

In this combo, Zac is Yasuo’s secret weapon. With Zac having three out of four abilities that can knock up and displace enemies, he can set up Yasuo’s R, Last Breath, in almost any scenario. Not to mention, all of Zac’s knock-ups are AOE, which means Yasuo will almost always be able to R multiple enemies. Even if enemies decide to split up against this pair, Zac’s Q, Stretching Strikes, can slam two targets together, allowing Yasuo to R at least two enemy Champions. In the early game, Zac’s E, Elastic Slingshot, is a long-ranged knock-up that pairs very well with Yasuo’s gap closing ability. It’s almost impossible to get away once a Champion is hit with Elastic Slingshot or any of Zac’s crowd-control abilities. With Yasuo’s insane damage output, the few seconds of Zac’s immobility is plenty to delete an enemy.

Xayah, the Rebel, and Rakan, the Charmer

This pair of lovebirds were designed to be played together. Aside from the great synergy in the design of their kits, their abilities gain unique and enhanced interactions with one another. When either Xayah or Rakan begin their recall channel, at any time, the other pair may join alongside that recall upon completion. When Xayah casts her W, Deadly Plumage, her enhanced auto attacks are also given to Rakan. For Rakan’s W, Battle Dance, when the target is Xayah, he can dash to her from a greater distance. Although these unique interactions seem minimal, they do add up when considering any other support or marksman would be losing these bonuses for the entirety of the game. Furthermore, the additional damage from the enhanced auto attacks and the increased dash range distance can be very important in close skirmishes, changing the game's momentum. Looking at their kits, Rakan’s R, the Quickness, can charm multiple enemies allowing Xayah to perfectly set up her R, Featherstorm, that shoots in a large cone shape. Once the charmed enemies are hit by Xayah’s Featherstorm, she can recall the feathers upon casting her E, Bladecaller, to deal large amounts of damage and further root the enemies. Not only is this pair hard to kill, with all the healing, shielding, and invulnerability, but the damage output they are capable of is a force to be reckoned with.

Caitlyn, the Sheriff of Piltover, and Xerath, the Magnus Ascendant

This Bot Lane pair is most feared for their poke. With Caitlyn having the largest auto attack range of 650 and Xerath’s long-ranged skill shots, the enemies will most definitely be stuck under their tower for the entirety of the early game. Not only will they constantly be dancing around to dodge the skillshots, but they must worry about large radius slows from Xerath’s W, Eye of Destruction, that can perfectly set up his E, Shocking Orb. When Xerath finally lands his stun, Caitlyn can place her W, Yordle Snap Trap, under them to secure her Headshot combo. If the enemy is hit with any one crowd control, they will not survive. Against this matchup, the enemy marksman must take Cleanse, which allows Caitlyn to execute her enemies with her R, Ace in the Hole, without worrying about Heal or Barrier.

Jarvan IV, the Exemplar of Demacia, and Gnar, the Missing Link

Although this combo isn’t seen frequently, their ultimates are why they work so well together. Jarvan’s ultimate Cataclysm summons terrain in a circular radius around the targeted Champion. Gnar’s ultimate, GNAR!, thrusts the target in a given direction, and if those targets are thrust into a wall, they are stunned and take a 50 percent increased damage. If we put these together, Jarvan creates an enclosed terrain that traps enemies, and Gnar can get into that enclosed terrain with his E, Hop. Afterward, his ultimate will thrust all enemies trapped inside of Jarvan’s Cataclysm into the terrain, stunning the enemies while dealing a large amount of damage. Aside from this powerful ultimate combo, both Jarvan and Gnar’s gap-closing capabilities allow them to work very well during ganks in the early game. The slow from Gnar’s Q, Boomerang allows Jarvan to get a secured E → Q knock-up combo. If the enemy somehow breaks free after the knock-up, Gnar’s ranged auto attacks can clip the enemy as they try to escape. Like many other Champions in this list, Jarvan and Gnar are a combo you cannot get away from if you are hit with even one spell.

Conclusion

Now that you know the strongest pairs in League of Legends, try a few of them out with their duo in Ranked! The more time spent with your duo, the more coordinated and powerful these Champions become. Even if you’re solo queuing and see a teammate lock in one of the Champions, it’s a good idea to complete the pair because the kits of these Champions are naturally powerful, giving your team a significant advantage.
