A Guide to Climb Higher in Arena with Mero

In this guide, we are joined by Mero to go over the best ways to survive longer and rank up faster in Arena.

Arena can be one of the most challenging game modes in Fortnite. As you climb higher you will be paired up with harder opponents. Not only that, the playstyle in Arena is very different from a regular match in battle royale.

Whether you’re new to this game mode or you find it hard to climb those leagues, this guide will cover the basics of Arena and go over some tips to climb the divisions with the help of Fortnite pro, Matthew “Mero” Faitel.

How Hype Works

The standard point system in Arena is the Hype system. You gain Hype by getting kills and placing high in a match. In some leagues, you have to pay a bus fare with your Hype to start a game. The more Hype you have, the higher your division and league will be. Keep in mind that kills in higher leagues will give you less Hype.

Choosing Your Landing Spot

Landing spots are one of the most important things in Arena. They can either give you a really good lead or they could end your game early. If you are just starting off, I would recommend to drop in those high populated areas just so you get a feel for Arena and the different mechanics it has (you don’t pay a bus fare Open League). Other than that, choosing your spot is very crucial if you want to climb Arena. If you pick an area with good loot, there will be a lot more people there, and if you want to land in an area that has fewer people, there might not be as much loot. Get a feel for your rotations after landing as well. Practicing your rotations after spawn is good for getting more loot and getting into that circle.

You have to practice off spawn a lot. There’s a lot of good spots on the map but there’s also not enough good spots on the map. So when you pick a good spot, you have to expect a pro team to already be landing there. So you have to put in the work off spawn and make sure you can live because that is the hardest part.

How to Get the Most Hype in a Game

If you want to get the most points in a game you definitely want to aim towards placement points. Not only does placement earn you more points than eliminations, eliminations are worth less the higher you climb, like I mentioned before. This system forces players to play a more passive and tactical playstyle rather than a more aggressive playstyle you might see in a regular match. As a result, you will find more players alive in the later circles than usual. However, you shouldn’t totally avoid elimination points.

Acquiring a couple of kills a game can really benefit you in the long run as they do add up. It’s better to get kills in the later zones so you don’t risk getting eliminated and losing those placement points. I also wanted to mention that playing trios is the fastest way to gain points because elimination points and placement points are shared between the three of you. More eliminations equals more points.

Here’s a table showing off the point system for the different leagues. From left to right are solos, duos, and trios.

I would say to aim for a mix of the two. Placement is obviously good and is the most important, but you’re definitely going to need a couple of kills per game. It could make a huge difference especially in tournaments or Cash Cups.

Choosing Your Fights

In an Arena game, it’s really important to choose your fights. Not only could it cost you your life, sometimes the points aren’t worth the waste of materials. The best time to go for eliminations is to third party. It’s very controversial but picking up easy kills means more points with fewer risks. Opponents who have already exhausted their materials or heals are very vulnerable to a second gunfight from a team who is fresh.

If you want to engage in a fight without being a third party. It’s better to stick to a better side of the zone where there aren't a lot of people around you for a potential third party. It’s also worth mentioning that you want to have good loot if you want to go for some eliminations, although this isn’t the case if it’s a desperate attempt for a siphon or loot. In the later stages of a game, fights are very common as the zones get smaller. You will have to be forced to fight and rotate towards enemies. If you aren’t confident enough to fight, it’s okay to run away and set up a better defense. After all, placement points are better than elimination points. Other than that, these end-game fights are pretty good for eliminations, as the circles get very populated, especially in the higher leagues and divisions.

You want to fight on a better side of the zone where there aren't a lot of people around you to clean you up and third party. You want to have good loot, but if you don’t have enough loot and you’re fighting for a refresh then it’s not that bad. End game is always the best way to get kills and stay safe, but you ultimately want to aim for placement points.

Practicing in Creative also helps. Here’s a code for some realistic 1v1’s: 7950-6306-4857. But feel free to explore the Creative sections yourself to see what you prefer.

Conclusion

Ranking up in Arena can be quite challenging for new players. The different mechanics and skill-based matchmaking makes the game mode harder than your average game. But by practicing your landing spot, learning how Hype works, and by choosing your fights, it will make ranking up that much easier.

A final tip: Be confident.
