Then look no further, because we consulted with Abdullah "Acorn" Akhras, one of the top IGLs in the competitive Fortnite scene. Acorn's expertise and experience have allowed us to gather his best advice on what it takes to become a strong IGL and lead your team to victory in Fortnite.

SKILLS AND RESPONSIBILITY

You have to know how to lead and you really have to have a good understanding of the game.

- Acorn

Becoming a strong in-game leader in Fortnite requires a combination of leadership skills and a deep understanding of the game. In order to be able to confidently lead your team to victory, you have to have that strong foundational understanding of the game itself. That means staying as up-to-date as possible on new items, locations, and the gameplay meta, as Fortnite is a forever-evolving game.

It also should come as no surprise that in order to be a competent IGL, you have to have the ability to lead. This involves confidently calling out plays, being constantly aware of your surroundings, and always thinking one step ahead. This also includes taking responsibility for your mistakes and not placing blame on others. In most cases, if something goes wrong, it is usually the IGL's fault. Therefore, being able to acknowledge and learn from your mistakes is crucial.

Most of the time, the quickest way to know if someone is a strong IGL, is if they place blame or not. Most of the time, it’s usually the IGL’s fault if something happens. If they are good at taking the blame and understanding their mistakes. It’s a combination of understanding and responsibility. Because, if you make a bad call, that's on you. It's really not on anybody else.

ANALYZE YOUR GAMEPLAY AND REFLECT

To develop as an IGL, it is important to constantly analyze and reflect on gameplay. After each game or tournament, gather your team on a call and watch your gameplay back together. Discuss what went right and what went wrong, trying to identify areas for improvement. This process of self-reflection and analysis will help you understand your strengths and weaknesses as an IGL.

We sit on a call and watch back our games, instantly after it ends. We'll talk about, “What do we think we did right? What do we think we did wrong? Try to figure it out. And then we just try to practice as much as we can.

STUDY THE TOP PLAYERS

Additionally, it is beneficial to study and learn from top players in the game. Focus on observing the strategies and decision-making of the best players, even if they are from different regions. For example, Europe is often considered to be ahead in terms of Fortnite gameplay. By watching and learning from the best, you can gain valuable insights and understand what you may be doing wrong.

I’m always watching other people. I really focus on the top players. If I think I'm the top in my region, I'll just go to a different region and see what I can learn from there. Europe, for example, is usually ahead of us.

PRACTICE AND STRIVE TO IMPROVE

Dedicate time to honing your leadership skills and game knowledge through consistent practice. Engage in scrims, participate in tournaments, and actively seek feedback from your teammates. By embracing responsibility, analyzing gameplay, learning from top players, and dedicating yourself to practice, you can develop into an effective in-game leader.

You just gotta watch the best. Learn from the best. Understand what you're doing wrong. And actually try to figure out what the problem is. And then just keep working on your mistakes, until eventually, you won't have any.
