With every new Fortnite chapter, Epic likes to add different mechanics or features to make sure that the gameplay experience is always fresh for players. There were several new features added with this newest chapter, but perhaps the most unique and impactful additions is weapon modifications. These new attachments help give your weapons a little extra edge, depending on their rarity and the modifications you find on or add to each gun.
Several different mods can change your scope, accuracy, and much more. Here we are going to run down each type of modification, where to change your modifications, and how rarity affects what modifications are on your guns.
Modifications and Rarity
Before we dive into the different modifications and combinations, it is important to understand how modifications work when you find weapons on the ground and in chests. Depending on the rarity, there will be a certain amount of modifications that will already be on a gun. Common (Grey) will have no modifications, Uncommon (Green) will have one, Rare (Blue) will have two, Epic (Purple) will have three, and finally Legendary and Mythic (Gold and Yellow) will have four. Now the only exception to this rule is if you happen to kill a boss and unlock the vault that contains a Mod Bench. Using a Mod Bench will allow you to put any number of attachments (up to four) on any rarity gun.
Mod Benches
Mod Benches are in vaults below all the named locations that have an NPC boss. Each of these bosses also carries their Mythic Weapon, defeating them will cause them to drop their keycard which leads you to the vault containing the Mod Bench, as well as their Mythic Weapon. The locations that hold these bosses and vaults are Grand Glacier, Reckless Railways, Lavish Lair, Fencing Fields, and Snooty Steps. The only way to open each vault is by using the respective keycard that each boss has in each area; however, once the vault has been opened, anyone can use the Mod Bench inside.
Modification Categories
To get started, it is important to know the different modification categories and which attachments are in each category. As of the release of this article, there are four different modification categories: Optic, Magazine, Underbarrel, and Barrel. Below is a list of each attachment in each category and what they do.

How To Use Modifications
While all the modifications in-game seem relatively straightforward, some work better than others on certain kinds of weapons. Now, if you prefer a certain combination of attachments to a certain weapon that works for you, by all means, keep at it. However, if you are unsure which kinds of attachments are good for a certain class of gun, here are a few tips to keep in mind.
Shotguns, Pistols, and SMGs
Shotguns, pistols, and SMGs are all close-range weapons that excel in tight quarters. However, with a few different attachments, they can even be deadly at mid-range as well. For starters, adding or having any type of enhanced optic is a good thing since you are already going to be hip-firing at close range. Make sure you add an optic so that you can cover mid-range fights. In addition to this, it is also a good idea to have a laser sight on these kinds of guns. Since you will be hip-firing quite often, adding that increased accuracy will give you even more of a leg up in those skirmishes.
Assault Rifles
Assault rifles can be tricky to customize because they are usually all up to player preference. However, there are some guidelines that you can follow to help you get a leg up on your assault rifles. For starters, since you are more often going to be using these in mid to long-range fights, adding an optic is very important. On top of that, making sure that you have reduced recoil is also going to be important, so adding a muzzle brake and a vertical foregrip will help you in those drawn-out long-range fights where every shot counts.
Sniper Rifles
Sniper rifles, like assault rifles, really do come down to player preference. Some players prefer having no scope and using iron sights to have a heavy-hitting close-range sniper over one with a high-optic scope used at long ranges. While scopes do tend to vary from person to person, there are other attachments that you should consider when looking for a sniper rifle. Adding a suppressor can help you stay quiet when picking off enemies who are not paying attention, and it can be good at any range. Also, having a speed mag on your sniper can significantly help you if you are in longer-range fights since lowering the long reload time can make all the difference in getting your next shot off.
Conclusion
Modifications are a fun way to keep the game competitive while also giving players the option to customize their loadouts even further to match their playstyle. With the addition of these modifications and new mechanics, it is always important to test out what you like the most. Testing out each of the weapons with a combination of different attachments will allow you to craft the loadout that you perform the best with. Whether it be a stealthy long-range sniper with a suppressor or a deadly close-range SMG with a drum mag and laser sight, you can craft your favorite loadout with ease using these new weapon modifications.
