Riot launched its next rotating mode, Ultimate Spellbook, alongside the new Star Guardian event on July 13th, 2022, which features Ahri's voice as announcer and Star Guardian minions.
This mode is played on the standard Summoner's Rift map, but one of your summoner spells is replaced with another champion's ultimate! You begin at level 3 with more gold, some bonus HP and movement speed, and 15% Tenacity.
In addition, the game mode has increased passive XP and gold, and you can share minion gold with teammates in the lane.
If you're a Jungler, you will have "Placeholder and Attack-Smite" instead of the "Placeholder Ult-ernate Summoner Spell" in this game mode. When you attack Blue or Red, the Scuttle Crab, Drake, or Baron, your Smite will be applied automatically if they have less than 450 HP.
However, Attack-Smite only works on your side of the map, so you can't steal enemies Blue or Red with Smite.
This mode's uniqueness is the opportunity to use the ultimate abilities of other Champions on your favorites! Players can now select one of four ultimate abilities instead of three in this patch. You have 30 seconds at the start of the game to choose one; if you do not, the game will choose one for you. This ultimate ability has a 135 seconds cooldown at first, but it can be used even before reaching level 6.
Your Champion's ultimate ability will be unavailable in your pool, but it may be available to your teammates. You can be playing, say, Karthus and one of your teammates can still have Requiem as a choice! Everyone's Ult-ernate Summoner Spell can be found next to their Health Bars, or you can check them in the Tab menu at any time.
Among the most frequently given ultimate abilities in this mode are Nocturne's Paranoia, Kayle’s Divine Judgment, Karthus' Requiem, Xerath's Rite of the Arcane, Seraphine's Encore, Ekko's Chronobreak, and Lux's Final Spark.
Also, after their initial cooldown time has passed, some ultimate abilities grant some Adaptive Force, bonus Armor, and bonus Magic Resistance as stated by Reina Sweets, the Lead Game Designer of Modes, in a Twitter post.
When choosing from your four ultimate options, you should be thinking about how to maximize your Champion's potential! Of course, you are free to try any combination you want, but some ultimate abilities are better suited to your role than others.
According to the Patch Notes, we now have new ultimate abilities in the pool, while some have been removed from this mode.
The best champions for this mode are those with mobility, and it's even better if they don't have to rely on mana.
Yone's E and Skarner's Impale combo is ideal for quickly approaching a target and dragging it with him under a tower or between teammates. Skarner's Impale also deals 60% AD and some bonus magic damage, allowing him to go for the kill if his opponent is weak.
Nocturne's Paranoia is an excellent choice for other assassins such as Zed, Ekko, or Katarina because it allows them to launch close to the enemy while removing vision. Keep in mind, however, that Katarina requires people to surround her while she is using her ultimate ability.
Ekko's Chronobreak is useful for escaping dangerous situations, and I’ve seen many assassins use it in this mode. However, if you use Ekko in conjunction with Skarne's Impale, you can not only save your life but also take an enemy with you to kill under the turret, as Yone would do.
An efficient Jungler knows when to gank and how to do so without being noticed by the enemy. Nocturne's Paranoia is ideal for a surprise gank that will frighten the entire enemy team, leaving them to wait in the dark to see who will be your victim. Jarvan's Cataclysm works well with champions like Rengar, Nocturne, or Hecarim who can quickly enter the arena and trap the target. Moreover, any jungle with Malzahar's Nether Grasp can secure a kill if the timing is right.
Also, with Kayle's Intervention's invulnerability, especially as a Rengar or Warwick, you can turn around a gank situation in which you and your teammates appear to be losing. If your teammates are low on HP, but so are your enemies, use Kayle's ultimate to prolong the fight and land the decisive blow.
ADCs are known for their long-range abilities, but who said you can't have more? Someone with a long-range ability, such as Jhin, can use his W or R to gain some vision before using their Ult-ernate Summoner Spell to secure the kill or steal the objective from enemies.
Other scenarios include an Ezreal with Xerath's Rite of the Arcane. Just when you thought you were safe from Xerath's ultimate ability, Ezreal surprises you with his R. Miss Fortune's Bullet Time is easily dodged by Flash, but if you pay attention to your opponent's direction, you can then punish that Flash with another long-range ultimate.
Don’t underestimate the value in using your Ult-ernate Ability for self-peel. Support ultimates are great for squishy ADCs. One of the best is Lulu's Wild Growth, which gives you extra health and an aura that slows nearby enemies.
Karthus’s Requiem, which is always effective for the entire team, can be used by any AP Champion in the Middle lane. The ultimate abilities of Ahri and Nocturne provide any Mid Laner with the mobility they need to move around the map and allow them to quickly close the gap on their opponents.
If both you and your opponent have low HP and your opponent is about to flee, you can use a ranged ultimate ability, such as Miss Fortune's Bullet Time, to get the kill right away. You can also use Lissandra's Frozen Tomb to either slow down enemies or heal yourself.
Since an efficient tank has a lot of HP, Mordekaiser's Children of the Grave is ideal for securing kills because the enemy can't easily escape it, and Tryndamere's invincibility is always appreciated in Top, where 2v1 dives are common.
Cho'Gath's ultimate ability is an obvious choice. With each Feast stack, you gain additional health and attack range. Tahm Kench has the ability to become invincible due to his E's passive, which allows him to store up to 300% of his HP as grey health. A full tank Volibear is also a problem for the opposing team because he can gain a lot of HP and eat his targets one by one. It's also funny to see other champions the size of a turret.
The ability to heal your teammates as a Support can be life-saving in an emergency. Soraka's and Janna's ultimate abilities complement tankier Supports who lack healing in their kit. Lulu's ultimate ability is useful both as a saving ability and as a buffing one.
When Morgana's Q or Lux's Q is combined with Sona's or Seraphine's ultimate abilities, you have the perfect combination for an eternal stun. Because they allow you to slow down enemies, these two ultimate abilities are also useful for tanks and other AP Supports.
With Shen's Stand United, you can both protect and get to your ADC quickly, which is highly helpful for tanks like Leona or Blitzcrank.
There you have it, a list of some possible ultimate abilities from which to choose to increase your chances of winning. Of course, the possibilities are endless. Every player enters this mode with a different approach and experience; some even choose ultimate abilities for fun, which is why you can see an ADC Soraka with Miss Fortune's Bullet Time. But that's the charm of this game mode!
