The Ultimate Inferno Smoke Guide

The Ultimate Inferno Smoke Guide

I heard you like easy smokes, so here are a bunch of them on Inferno!

Smoke grenades are a crucial part of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and have dominated the whole team play meta of this game since its release. Even though the overhauled Inferno has been out for quite some time now, it still is common to spot players who don't know even just one useful smoke on this map. This guide will show you many smokes, most of them thrown from sincerely safe areas, this time even without jumping at all! This allows for these smokes to be easily replicated by anyone who is willing to put in more than 2 minutes on an empty server. To clear this article of any obvious information, I have left out obvious smokes that you just blatantly throw into the intended area, like smoking off the top of Banana when you're standing relatively close to it.

This article will have the following structure for all smoke grenades:

The place where you will smoke - Pros and Cons - Visuals - A small video showing the smoke line-up

However, before we jump into this article and all of its useful smokes, let me try to explain to you what an actual good smoke is. The first thing that needs to be clear is the intended purpose of a smoke: It is supposed to mask your movement, in order to stay undetected or gain a safer passage or deny vision of the enemy overseeing certain spots by removing his ability to see spots where you intended to take map control.

What Does This Mean For Us?

We can easily translate my phrase into a practical use in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive: If you want to gain a safer passageway, you need to smoke off the vision of the opposition. This can be done by placing the smoke grenade between two solid places, like at Brokenwall on Cobblestone, where you can throw a smoke between the wall that is separating B-Long from the B-Bombsite, as well as the crate that is giving the CTs cover close to the stairs. It takes vision away from CTs who are playing on the B-Bombsite or Chicken Coop, which allows you to pass over to the crate. If the gap is bigger, and you cannot use more than one smoke, you may try to throw the smoke in a way that the unavoidable gap only appears close to your destination. This allows for your hitbox to already be in a safe spot once the enemy normally can react to you. If the gap is somewhere else, it may leave the enemy time to trace your movement with their crosshair and spray you, or worse, use an AWP to instakill you. Remember that gapless smokes are always better for you unless you want to try a one-way smoke. This is also true for smokes that try to block off the view of an enemy. Let me try to demonstrate this principle with pictures:

This smoke could cause you trouble because it leaves a big gap that the enemy would be able to take advantage of.

This smoke is better because it covers all sides evenly and does not allow an enemy to peek through as easily.

This is not the only thing you need to be careful about. Some smokes may land in places that suggest safety, but you need to think about more directions than just left and right.

This smoke could suggest you that you are safe if you suspect that the enemy tries to watch you enter the bombsite from A-Short. If the smoke lands on the ground instead of in the bombsite, like seen in the picture, an enemy could easily spot you enter the bombsite from the balcony. This would most likely be to your detriment.

My Crosshair

You will realise that I often have a crosshair that seems similar to my normal one but is incredibly long. This helps me find the line-ups I need, and I don't have to waste time double checking if I have the correct line-up. I have, however, forgotten where exactly I learned about it, sohere are a few resources for you to read through.

You also have to keep in mind that my crosshairs will most likely be different than yours. Yours may be smaller, longer, just a dot or something completely different. Therefore, you should compensate for your crosshairs while reading this guide. I will always write from my crosshairs' perspective, as it would be impossible to think of every possible crosshair and adjust the guide.

The Smokes

Now, the thing we all have been waiting for. I will start with the T-side smokes, start with B, then A and then switch to the CT-side to show you B and then A smokes. A lot of the Inferno smokes are straightforward and almost always useful, meanwhile, the other smokes may seem extremely situational. This comes with the nature of Inferno and how predictable all the engagements are, as well as the current meta of the map. The CT-side will also feature a lot of retake smokes, as most defensive smokes are too intuitive to be included in this article. Reminder: You can right click to view the picture in its original size!

T-Side

Barrel (in front of T-Spawn) to the top of Banana

What does it do?

This smoke will allow you to deny the CT any vision of Banana basically from the beginning of the round. This takes crucial information away from the CTs, which is also why you have to be careful with this smoke: It may incite the CTs to try funny stuff, like boosting on the Wallbang-wall on the left or boosting above each other on the barrels of the old car position. Furthermore, if applied correctly, will allow for your team to outplay the CTs many times with all kinds of fakes.

How to throw

To throw this smoke you need to stand in the corner of the barrel and the wall right outside of the T-Spawn. You would then have to aim at the edge of the roof of the building to your left. You will need to shiftwalk until your crosshair hits the part of the building where the wall and the roof meet, where you need to throw your grenade while walking.

Firewood to CT Deep

What does it do?

This smoke will smoke off any rotation or CT player who is playing deep to keep Construction safe. With this smoke, you can easily bypass anyone securing the Construction position, meanwhile also blocking off any vision of the CTs towards the B-Bombsite.

How to throw

You need to stand in front of this piece of wood, right at the right edge of it.

Then, you will need to line up your crosshair with the flowers of the lower flowerpot and the left edge of the upper railing on the right.

You will need to shiftwalk and then throw when your crosshair hits the flower.

Firewood to Coffins (One-Way Smoke)

What does it do?

This smoke will cut off any CTs playing inside of Construction as well as CTs playing on the powerful Coffins position, which is a position commonly played by AWPers. This smoke has the big advantage of leaving a gap at foot level, which allows for Ts, who are coming in from the B-Entryway, to spot any CTs playing behind the smoke, while the CTs cannot see you.

How to throw

You should stand in the corner of Firewood as well as the wall in Banana. Then you need to find the strut right next to the pin, which is highlighted in the screenshots. You will need to aim up until you aim central at the wires, which is the point you will be aiming at when you throw.

Firewood to Construction

What does it do?

This line-up will allow you to smoke off the Construction position without exposing yourself to any Coffins or Construction players. This is an alternative to the smoke shown above, in case you are successful in punishing the Coffins player or in case you want to run on site instead of picking off CTs playing in Construction.

How to throw

If you stand right at the spot from where you threw the Firewood to Coffins smoke, you can just aim at the pin to which right side you just aimed. You can simply throw.

Wallbang to CT

What does it do?

This smoke will push back anyone playing inside the close-CT position, as well as cut off fast rotations or cut-off attacks from the CTs. Be careful with this smoke, as the CT-boost is a viable option to simply look above it.

How to throw

Find this part of the wall behind the Wallbang and walk up to it.

Now you can line up your crosshair with the middle of the chimney, as well as the edge of the balcony above you.

Construction to CT

What does it do?

Being yet another way to smoke off CT, this line-up is especially good to deploy later in the round, after you have already taken the B-Bombsite, in order to make retakes harder. This will most likely funnel the CTs into the Construction position, where you can cut them off with a sneaky position or a trap.

How to throw

Find this corner to stand in it.

Now you will need to line up your crosshair with the highlighted edge and aim at the highlighted pole, right above the highlighted edge.

T-Spawn to Top Mid

What does it do?

This smoke will enable you to take Mid control easier, meanwhile denying the CTs information about your positioning. This, combined with the top-Banana smoke, will allow you so much freedom around the map, at the cost of two smokes, that is.

How to throw

Stand centralised in front of this pillar outside of T-Spawn.

You will need to line up your crosshair with the top of the cross of the big tower, as well as the two crooked parts of the antenna below the crosshair.

Then you will need to shiftwalk and throw when your crosshair hits the horizontal part of the cross.

T-Balcony to Apartments

What does it do?

This smoke will cut off the Boiler position from the rest of Apartments, which will allow you to take control of Apartments easier. This smoke is especially useful when you want to throw a fake, as you are relatively safe from the T-Balcony and can just make noise on A to draw CTs away from B.

How to throw

Jump up on the railing stand right in front of the edge of the roof I am aiming at.

Now, after having shot out the window, you need to aim centralised above the concrete coloured window frame and throw.

Bench to in front of Pit

What does it do?

This smoke will shut down any defence the CTs try to put up from the Pit area, as long as you're not entering the bombsite yet. This allows for you to correctly set up a strong A-take in a relatively safe area. Keep in mind that this only blocks off the view of the Pit player as long as he stays behind the broken wall bit.

How to throw

Stand in the corner of this broom.

And line up your crosshair above the right chimney and on one level with the corner of the roof of the orange building.

Shiftwalk until you hit the metal thing that holds the cables, which is the point where you let go of mouse1 and throw your smoke.

Tunnel to Short

What does it do?

This will be a crucial smoke for every B-Split execute. It is an easy way to throw the smoke from a relatively safe position. It blocks off the view of any CT playing on Short and opens up the route into the CT-Spawn.

How to throw

Jump into the opening of the tunnel and line yourself up in front of this black line.

Now aim at the lower end of the cable at the pillar, right above the metal piece, and throw.

2nd Mid Door to Long

What does it do?

This smoke opens up the short way to A for your taking, as it blocks off any view of a CT potentially playing in Long, especially AWPers who will not dare to push through... except in Matchmaking. Never trust logic in Matchmaking.

How to throw

Walk up to this door and stand centralised in front of it. Now you need to aim at a white spot on the wall I am aiming at, which is close to the tail of the lion. A close up follows.

2nd Mid Broom to Arch

What does it do?

This map will be crucial if you want to split A through Long and Short and/or Apartments, as it allows you to push back the CTs further and not give them any room to work with on Long. If you combine this smoke with the Library smoke you will have a safe passage through A-Long to the A-Bombsite.

How to throw

Place yourself right in front of this broom.

You need to line up your crosshair with the highlighted beam as well as the ledge of the tower and then throw.

Top Mid to Library

What does this do?

This smoke, together with the Arch smoke, is crucial for any A-Split attack, as it takes the CTs a valuable position that could be useful in defending against an A-Split.

How to throw

Find this brick on the outside wall of the Apartments building and stand in front of the left part of it.

Now, look at this beam...

...And aim straight up until you can barely not see the beam anymore.

CT-Side

CT Deep to Top Banana

What does it do?

This smoke will block off the Ts who are always showing aggression on B. You can calm the situation down easier, as the Ts will think twice before running through this smoke, while also being in a disadvantageous position if and when they decide to go through it. Keep in mind that this smoke will not pop if the Ts actually rush all the way from T-Spawn to B. You might still remember that this also is of use for the Ts from a previous paragraph, so don't use this smoke recklessly.

How to throw

Stand at the left end of this thing in the Deep CT area close to Construction.

Line up your crosshair with the slightly bend part of the left roof and the highlighted beam.

Top Banana to Lower Banana

What does it do?

This line-up is especially useful if you want to block off the Ts from potentially taking Banana if you have knowledge that they're not in Banana at the moment, which allows you to take full Banana control and reinforce A. It would be really dangerous for the Ts to jump through this smoke, as they do not know what is waiting. It could be an AWPer at car or someone standing at the tree position to the left, ready and waiting with the P90.

How to throw

Stand under this window, which is placed close to the Car/Barrels positon.

Now simply aim below the balcony as well as to the right of the left wall.

CT-Spawn to B-Entryway

What does it do?

This smoke will smoke off any Ts trying to enter the B-Bombsite for a bombsite take. It is easily thrown by a rotating CT if you have lost a player in Banana and could delay them in Banana.

How to throw

Stand in this corner in CT-Spawn.

Now you will need to line up your smoke with the upper end of the window as well as the overlapping section of the two roofs.

Hay to Lower Mid

What does it do?

This smoke will block off any vision the Ts might have to Top Mid from T-Ramp. It leaves open a passage to Banana, which is a downside of this smoke. However, throwing this smoke will allow you to try to get Mid as well as 2nd Mid control, especially if you know that the Ts like to set up in Mid as well as 2nd Mid.

How to throw

Stand in the corner of the Hay and aim above the right side of the chimney as well on one line with the corner of the flowerpot.

Now shiftwalk and throw when you hit the beam on the right, which my crosshair is touching right now.

Hay to T-Ramp

What does it do?

This is an alternative to the shown Lower Mid smoke. It does not cut off the way from Banana to Mid, which makes Banana a big threat when you try to take Mid with this specific smoke. However, if you want to keep the Ts shut out of Mid as well as Banana and you know that they're still not through T-Ramp than this smoke will be worth its weight in gold.

How to throw

You will have to stand in the same corner that was shown in the Hay to Lower Mid smoke and line up your crosshair with the corner of the flowerpot, but this time you have to line up your crosshair with the edge of the roof instead of the edge of the chimney.

You will have to shiftwalk and let go of the smoke when you hit the same beam again.

Pit to Long

What does it do?

This smoke allows you to safely and reliably smoke off the Long position if you have to defend against an A-Split, to further delay or deny the take. Even though it grants slight vision to some part of the area in front of A, it does not grant access to anything beyond the smoke without taking their vision for at least a second. This smoke can also be used by the Ts in an afterplant scenario.

How to throw

Stand in this corner in Pit.

Now you need to line up your crosshair with the point of contact of the barrel and the wall below my crosshair as well as the top of the pin on top of the lamp to the right.

While you shiftwalk, you need to throw the smoke when your crosshair touches the bigger part of the lamp, like it is shown in this picture.

Arch to in front of Pit

What does it do?

This smoke is really situational, as it only grants you safe access into the bombsite if you come from the Arch position and hug the right wall while you walk up to the bombsite. It does, however, take away a strong position for the Ts if they have a player in Pit.

How to throw

Stand in this corner inside of the Archway.

Aim above the middle of the metal thing that holds the cables and the small dent in the tiles that are highlighted in the left picture. Now you need to shiftwalk until you hit the other highlighted dent in the right picture, which is where you let go off your smoke and throw it.

I hope you enjoyed this edition of the Ultimate Smoke Guide and that you learned some useful smokes through this article! Let's see how many of these smokes are going to be used in Matchmaking from now on. Have a good one!
