Interview with REN Freeze: "I've never lost a trade as Draven versus Kalista"

Roscoe talks with Renegades' AD Carry Freeze on his LCS performance in Week 4.

As we bid farewell to the fourth week of the NA LCS Robert "Roscoe" Wery caught up with the Renegades' AD Carry Aleš "Freeze" Kněžínek. In this interview Freeze introduces us to his and his team's problems, their future plans and his feelings in general.

You guys just played against TSM. It’s been rough, but you've been consistently putting a fight. What was your mindset, what were you trying to go for against TSM? They're a strong team and you've certainly showed that you can have strong points as well, what were you guys thinking going into the match?

Freeze: Our mindset was just going for the opportunity every time we see it. We have this problem when we get ahead early game and then mid game we start doing nothing. We're trying to fix that and the mindset for fixing it is to just do anything you want to see. It doesn't matter if you screw up, just go for it. That was our mindset and that's why the game was so bloody.

I've got a couple stats written down. You personally are the #3 in NA LCS in CS a minute (9.4) and then the #4 in kill participation at 85%. You guys had some difficult weeks but you have been very proficient in the AD Carry role. That Draven pick was interesting. What prompted to the Draven pick?

Freeze: Well, honestly, I feel like I play like garbage. I could've played so much better, you know. And the Draven pick is super good onto Kalista, and they've picked Kalista away from me. I was like "I will just play Draven, show them what I can do" and the game was perfect for it. I'm just sad I didn't do better because I could've played so much better. This game was perfect for Draven, but I haven't played him for a week. This game was perfect for it and I had to go for it, even though I haven't practiced it… I yolo'd it. Sadly, I didn't perform to my expectations.

Other champions like Lucian and Cait were open, but you said you wanted to go for Draven into Kalista. Specifically, why? Why is Draven good into Kalista for you?

Freeze: Basically, I can kill him any time. I've never lost a trade as Draven versus Kalista and every time I slow him, he either has to flash out or he'll die. It's a very easy lane for me. We knew that Doublelift is overextending a lot which, for me, is like a "red alert". I can just kill him every time he overextends because I can kill him myself.

I remember, in the post-game interview, Doublelift was very, very self-critical. He said he got caught by Orianna ults even though he had flashes… How do you feel you make yourself among NA carries?

Freeze: The AD Carries that surprised me in NA were Piglet and OHQ from TDK. Those are the ones I get super surprised at how well they play. And the others are usually Sneaky and Doublelift who play well in lane and in teamfights, but they didn't really surprise me. I knew what I should expect from them. I didn't really know that from Piglet and OHQ and I'm super glad when I play against them because I usually test my limits in that match-ups, and it goes either way.

In terms of testing your limits, you've had to adapt your play to the changes in your roster. How has it been trying to adjust to that?

Freeze: Well, it's been rough. It usually is when you switch players. Support and top lane are really important because they are the one that make plays. Top lane teleports, support is the one who roams around the map and puts vision. It's really hard to make the change, it's not plug and play, but it hasn't been super hard for me. I just do my own thing, I right click and kill people, do damage, farm minions, and that's it for me. But as a team, I don't think we take it that well.

How has playing with Hakuho on the bot lane been for you?

Freeze: He surprised me because I haven't heard his name anywhere until the coach brought up that I should play with him. We tried duoQ's and he played really well on certain champions, so I was surprised. He's like a "one trick pony" because, usually when he plays champions, he plays one champion a lot and the others just a bit. He becomes super good at that one champion. Then he switches the champion and it's like running a bike, you know. If you're really good at playing a champion you can just pick it up, you don't have to practice it a lot anymore. That's the best way to learn champions.

Next week you guys have Ekko Fox and Team Liquid. Is there anything you're trying to adjust or practice more positives for the next matches?

Freeze: As I said before, we will definitely try to fix our mid game. We will practice different calls so when the time comes we can go for those calls without throwing or losing the game. And we will definitely be more aggressive in the mid game.

Hopefully we'll see you guys have bounced back a little better. Good luck to you next week! Do you have any shootouts for the end of the interview?

Freeze: Thanks for watching the interview, thanks for the support guys, I love you and I'll see you next week!
