Veigar: The Rise of the Midlane Tiny Master of Evil

An article that touches on the stengths and weaknesses of Veigar, the Tiny Master of Evil.

Whats a Veigar?

If you take a look at the patch notes Veigar has been changed very little in a long time making him very strong. Many people look at Veigar and say "hmm, never seen him before" and simply pass over him in champion select in Solo Que. Even though Veigar isn't considered overpowered in the current meta, he is a great champion that deserves more attention and recognition.

The Kit

Let's start by taking a look at Veigar’s kit. Veigar’s passive Equilibrium gives him 1% bonus mana regen for each 1% of missing mana giving him somewhat of a built-in Chalice of Harmony and providing him with some great sustain in lane. His Q or Baleful Strike is similar to a Nasus Q where if he kills a minion with it, he gets one stack permanently. But unlike Nasus’ Q which only affects his Q damage with each stack, Veigar raises his total ability power by 1.

Moreover, this skill deals magic damage rather than physical. His Q has a second effect where if Veigar gets a kill he gets a bonus 5 AP, helping him snowball the game if he gets a great early game. It also has a 60% AP scaling which is pretty dang good for a low cooldown Q. Veigar’s W or Dark Matter has a 1.25 second casting time after which it falls down to earth dealing AOE magic damage with 100% AP scaling. It is also very useful for checking brushes before going into them so you don't get blown up by surprise.

His E or Event Horizon is an interesting form of AOE. It's shaped in the same way as a Thresh box, it’s larger and rather then dealing damage and slowing enemies that pass through it, it stuns. The box cannot be jumped out of with gapclosers such as Kha’Zix E and Tristana's Rocket Jump , as the stun will still apply where they land. At max level the walls stun for 2.5 seconds allowing Veigar to pull of his full combo and helping his team burst down all those trapped in the Event Horizon. Veigar’s ultimate is one of his biggest draws. It's called Primordial Burst and at max rank has a base damage of 500. But with a ridiculous 120% AP scaling it becomes a huge form of burst. It has a passive that does 80% of the target's AP as added damage, allowing you to 100-0 the enemy AP carry in one ult.

What Should I Build?

When you enter Summoner's Rift you will want to start with a Doran's Ring and two Health Potions aswell as a yellow warding trinket. This build gives you a bit of sustain in lane. Your first item varies depending on how you do in lane but the main item you will want to rush is Deathfire Grasp. It provides extra burst needed to kill all those who stand before you. The next item depends really on how you are doing.

Though your passive gives you a built in Chalice of Harmony, you may want to pick up an Athene's Unholy Grail for extra cooldown reduction and magic resist and to nearly never run out of mana. The next items should be a Void Staff and Rabadon's Deathcap in any order depending on how much gold you have. In a best case situation you will want to grab a Rabadon's first. Your final build should be Deathfire Grasp, Rabadon's Deathcap, Void Staff, Abyssal Scepter, Zhonya's Hourglass and either an Athene's Unholy Grail or a Guardian Angel. If you get a Guardian Angel, you are sacraficing some Ability Power for the ability to have a second chance to get your combo off.

The Combo

Many champions have a certain spell combo they can use to pull off the ultimate combo. Examples for this are Ryze, Yorick and LeBlanc, just to name a few. Veigar is no different and is very reliant on you being able to land the combo. For Veigar his basic combo is to lock the enemies down with you E, then if you have DFG you will use that first to enhance all your next attacks on that target. Follow up with your W right on top of them because it takes a moment to land and do damage, then you launch your Q, and finally you ult if neccesary for full takedown. This is very useful against nearly every semi-squishy target with an extreme amount of damage done to targets who are squishy and use Ability Power such as AP assassins like Ahri and LeBlanc.
