I had a chat with Kurt 'Weak3n' Schray on what it takes to be a World Champion.
I had a chat with Kurt 'Weak3n' Schray on what it takes to be a World Champion.
Kurt 'Weak3n' Schray is a professional SMITE player for Luminosity Gaming. Weak3n mains as a jungler and has taken First Place at numerous events, including SMITE Masters in Sao Paulo. He started his professional career when he created Mediocrity Gaming and has played for other big organizations such as compLexity and Team EnVyUs.
First off, what got you into SMITE? What is the appeal for you when compared to other games out there?
Weak3n: I was very into WoW arena and always played FPS games like Halo 2/Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. I feel like SMITE is a combination of both of these games with more strategy built in. Felt like it was the perfect game.
What other games have you been heavily involved with in the past?
Weak3n: Halo 2, MW2, WoW up to Wrath expansion, PUBG, Fornite, Realm Royale.
Earlier this year you joined up with Luminosity Gaming – how has that been so far?
Weak3n: It's been great working with them and Hi-Rez on the new format. I am excited for Worlds and what they have coming next year.
You and Luminosity recently played in the 2018 NA SPL Summer Season – how did you feel both you and the team performed and what are the plans or goals moving forward for future tournaments?
Weak3n: We had a rough split - we ended up switching out our mid to get us the big change we need going into this final split.
You’ve personally taken First Place in numerous events – for those who are reading this article and want to someday obtain the level of play that you’re at, what can they expect in terms of how much practice goes into preparing for qualifiers and/or tournaments?
Weak3n: Honestly in SMITE, practice is not as hardcore as it is in some other top esports. We put in 4 hours a night into scrims, 2-4 hours a week into watching VODS and talking over things, and then planning for an hour or so before each game. When a LAN event is coming up we put in a lot more work planning because you can do that at any moment while being there in person. A night at dinner could become all strategy talk.
Any upcoming events you’re taking part in that readers should look forward to watching you play in?
Weak3n: The big Worlds events are coming up in November and hopefully we get some announcements as to what’s happening Season 6 of SMITE.
As a jungler main, do you have any tips that may seem small, but can make a large difference to maybe help others push their skill to the next level?
Weak3n: Communicating what you plan on doing goes a lot further than most people realize. Saying I would like to gank a lane in 30 seconds gets everyone on the same page for the next moments of the game which is huge. Also, just min/maxing your farm while keeping pressure on the enemy team is the biggest thing you will struggle with.
What do you enjoy most about the jungler role?
Weak3n: Having full control of each match. Most games are played through the jungler so you in a lot of ways make the team win or lose.
Is there any other player that you absolutely love (or hate) jungling against?
Weak3n: Used to be Andinster back in the day but for the last 3 years I don’t struggle with any other junglers.
What are some things you look out for when watching for possible ganks to call out for the team?
Weak3n: My eyes are always on the mini map. If you watch my stream I am able to read chat and still play the game and do really well. This is because I spend all my time in competitive watching the map making call outs for myself and my team.
For the last question, something fun and easy – you can only play ONE God for the rest of your SMITE career – who are you picking?
Weak3n: Serqet. She can be played so many ways and has been my favorite since I brought her into the meta back in s1/s2 of Smite.
Thank you so much to Weak3n for answering some questions for me! Find an awesome montage and all of his info below!
