Interview with Redmercy

In this article we interview popular Youtuber/Streamer, Redmercy.

Dmitry 'Redmercy' Garani is a fulltime Youtuber at youtube.com/redmercy and streamer over at twitch.tv/redmercyLoL focusing mainly on League of Legends content. He loves to make educational content focused around teaching people tips and tricks, cool information about a champion, interesting interactions, how to play a certain champion, and even entertaining videos such as highlights from his stream.

What originally got you interested in creating Youtube videos? At what point did you decide to fully commit to it?

Redmercy: Well, one of my life goals was actually to be famous one way or another in something, so I am slowly achieving that, I'd say, with YouTube. I always wanted to have some sort of impact on several people and be a role model, I don't know why. But how I started was, I was watching Huskystarcraft way back when, and he made a video talking about how he wants his viewers to send him a video of them commentating over a Starcraft 2 game. I did that and thought it was fun, so I kept doing a bit more. Two of the videos ended up getting about 4k views and, back then, that was mind blowing to me. Not long after, I realized I should be making videos about a game I am actually somewhat good at, since I suck at Starcraft, which lead into the transition to League.

Do you have any cool future plans that you're willing to share with us such as a new video series?

Redmercy: I am slowly starting to work on making a small team of my friends that I will be playing games with often and making many videos about, that will range from funny stuff to cool OP plays! Similar to how sp4zie has it with his team CG.

Making a living as a content creator is a dream for many gamers. If so, do you have any pro-tips for aspiring content creators?

Redmercy: This is a question I get asked all the time. There isn't really an answer for it unfortunately. A lot of it does tend to be luck, however some tips I have are make something unique and give people a reason to want to watch your videos. Always ask yourself the question, "why would I watch my videos" and make sure to be able to answer that. Also, perseverance is very important and to not give up because anything can happen and a lot of the time, trolls and rude people will make it very difficult to continue or just not seeing the growth that you want. I almost quit my channel around 10,000 subscribers because I felt overwhelmed by the negative comments, but as of today, I am of course grateful I continued.

What video series do you put the most effort into?

Redmercy: I am honestly not sure which one is most often, I try to have a mix of many different series. However one of my bigger and more popular ones are probably my "Did You Know?" series where I talk about a champion and their abilities, tips & tricks, and their lore. Sometimes, I dive into complex theories about these champions as well. Another one I have is called "League of Myths", where I have users submit "myths" to me that I test in episodes. This usually includes things like how X champion ability will interact with Y champion under specific cirumstances and people find that very interesting. For instance, Veigar can get an assist by using his E on the target but not actually stunning them, just having them stand in the centre, and no other form of interaction from Veigar.

Which video series would you say is your favorite to work on?

Redmercy: My favourite video series to work on tends to be either my highlight videos from stream or just games with friends cause I tend to make them a mini-montage and I love syncing music with plays in the game, or my videos where I go over a champion that is either very popular in the meta or make something new work mid lane, and go over everything people need to know to play them such as pros, cons, items, runes, masteries, general tips, etc. This one feels very core and home to my channel and what it was built upon and I love teaching people things to play and how to play them.

What do you see yourself doing a few years down the line?

Redmercy: Hopefully still working on YouTube making videos about League or being able to make videos about other games. One main goal I had when I first started this channel was to use it as a stepping stone to work at Riot Games, so maybe I will be there in a few years. But regardless, working within the gaming industry one way or another!

Do you ever suffer from burnout when creating content/streaming? If so, how do you handle that?

Redmercy: Definitely. After doing YouTube for over 3 years, it sometimes ends up being and feeling more of a chore so I try to think of new video ideas that I feel more passionate about or make videos about upcoming stuff on the PBE server because I find it very interesting to play new stuff and showcase them in a video. But my "Did You Know?" series is around 80 episodes in and that one takes a very long time to make as I usually spend a full day working on it. But after that many episodes it does feel a little...boring to make but I know people love watching that one and usually that reminder is enough to make me want to keep going at making it. For streaming, currently I stream about 2 times a week because I mainly like to focus on YouTube and also because I get tired of streaming REALLY easily. I am not someone that can sit and play League for several hours consecutively every single day. I like to play a couple games, then stop for a bit, then continue again but streaming requires you to grind it out. So for streaming, I just play 4 hours or so then stop and luckily I don't need to stream that much more, though I am trying to whenever I can.

Are there any streamers or youtubers that you like to watch in your free time?

Redmercy: Funnily enough, as a YouTuber, I don't really watch that many YouTube videos. The only channel I can think of that I would watch somewhat often is maybe the Did You Know Gaming channel, which is where I got inspired to start my "Did You Know" series for League, and maybe some Buzzfeed or just videos from Reddit. For streaming, I tend to watch someone most of the time, ranging from VoyBoy or Bjergsen for the high level plays, to my personal friends such as Pokelawls, Roflgator, etc.

Outside of League of Legends, what do you like to do in your spare time?

Redmercy: I try to go to the gym when I can though being busy and just lazy has been making that difficuly lately, haha. I love watching streams, anime, shows, and just going out with friends. I play phone games at times, other mobas like HotS, or just some random steam games. I also love playing sports such as golf, tennis, badminton, ping pong, etc.

Any shoutouts?

Redmercy: Shoutouts to my boys Pokelawls over at twitch.tv/pokelawls , one of the funnier dudes to watch in my opinion, and my boy Roflgator over at twitch.tv/roflgator. Also, shoutout to Poqito for being a great friend and helping me when I need it, and my beautiful girlfriend Mae, or iMuffinsx3.
