Nautilus The Titan of the Depths: Guide

A guide to Support Nautilus

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

General Info
Nautilus is one of thebest supports that Riot has released in a long time. This guide will be showing how to play support Nautilus, and will not cover the less effective top and jungle Nautilus. DON'T play nautilus if you are bad at hooking things with Blitzcrank. The whole point of Nautilus is to dominate bottom lane and feed kills to the ranged carry, while shutting down the enemy ranged carry.

KEEP IN MIND: Nautilus doesn't have a heal, so whoever you lane with on bottom should be careful when taking hit for hit if the enemy team has a heal support.

What to prioritize (Abilities)

R QE W

His Abilities; Descriptions / Laning Phase

Q.) Dredge Line:Nautilus throws his anchor forward, if he hits a champion both he and the enemy champion are pulled TOGETHER, if it hits terrain (turrets and walls) Nautilus is dragged to the terrain. Note: This will not go over cliffs, it will drag you to the cliff, so do not try and pull people up or down cliffs, it also hits enemy minions, and has a large hit box so be carefull.

While in laning phase you want to use this ability to pull whatever enemy is the weakest from behind their minions. Make sure your lane partner is in range to help dps them down. As Nautilus your goal is to get your ranged carry as many kills as possible while not taking any of their minions.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Support Nautilus gets all of his gold from assist kills in lane, if you have a dry laning period, you are going to be much less effective later on in the game.

W.) Titans Wrath: Nautilus shields himself and gains a DOT on his auto attack. The effect only lasts as long as the shield is up. Use this to reduce incoming damage in the laning phase, you can also use it after you have successfully pulled somone to deal extra damage to them.

E.) Riptide: Nautilus slams the ground causing an aoe water explosion. The explosion has three seperate parts and expands from Nautilus, this ability has the capability to hit the enemy 3 times and slows / damages them. Use this to slow whoever you pull, it is best to use it immediately after you have pulled an enemy.

R.) Depth Charge: Nautilus fires a shockwave at a targeted opponent. It follows them and knocks and damages anybody it hits in its path. When it hits the targeted enemy it knocks them up and deals damage. Use this to disrupt large groups of enemies and shut down the enemy carry in teamfights. In the lane use this to guarantee a kill for your ranged carry.

Passive: Whenever Nautilus attacks he deals extra physical damage and immoblizes his target. This effect cannoy happen more than once every few seconds.

Team Fights:What do I do?!

As Nautilus it is your job to successfully initiate a teamfight. This is another reason why Nautilus is an advanced character to learn. You want to look for any of the enemy carries to over extend, or leave formation. If you can pull an enemy carry for your enemy team to kill it can nearly guarantee a teamfight victory.

Keep in mind though that your Q will also drag YOU towards the enemy team. It is because of this that a good Nautilus will often end a game negative with around 20 assists. After you land your pull it is a race against time to use all of your abilities before you die or become too weak to continue the teamfight.

Always ult the enemy carry or whoever is doing the most damage. As soon as you are dragged into their team with your hook use your E so they cannot run away. And activate your shield because things are going to get a bit bumpy for the next 5 seconds.

Runes

Pure Tank (Weaker laning phase, not recomended unless you have a plan):
Marks: x9 Greater Mark of Resilience

Glyphs: x9 Greater Glyph of Warding

Seals: x9 Greater Seal of Resilience

Quints: x3 Greater Quintessence of Endurance

AP (Gives a very strong early game, and allows you to feed your carry kills):

Marks: x9 Greater Mark of Insight

Glyphs: x9 Greater Glyph of Potency

Seals: x9 Greater Seal of Clarity

Quints: x3 Greater Quintessence of Potency

Summoner Spells

Teleport and Heal : You pick these up because Nautilus is a VERY slow champ, and because he makes minimal gold he has to buy a philo stone over boots early on. Teleport gets you to your lane emediately and allows you to continue feeding your carry as soon as possible.

Heal is taken because you yank yourself into harms way when you use Q, heal allows you to survive a little longer and secure the first blood.

Masteries

take 21-0-9, though it may seem counter intuitive NOT to take tank masteries there is a reason. With an AP rune page you will deal a great deal of damage at earlier levels, the sooner you get a kill in lane the greater your snowball will be. Do not be afraid to pull an enemy early on, even if it means sacrificing yourself, as long as your carry can pick up a double kill it will be worth it.

Alternatively
If you are not confident in the AP build and you decided to bring tank Runes, go ahead and follow up with 0-21-9 masteries.

The Build:

Laning Phase (Early)
- Concentrate on getting a philo stone and boots

Laning Phase (Middle)
- Buy a Heart of Gold if your lane is doing poorly and you are making no gold.

- If your lane is dominating and you have a lot of cash, buy a Catalyst the Protector.

Laning Phase (End)
- Finish Boots, get Ionian Boots of Lucidity.

- Finish your Rod of Ages if you bought a Catalyst.

- If you bought a heart of gold buy a Giant's Belt.

Mid Game
- Concentrate on buying a Rylais.

- Buy a Shurelya's Reverie.

- If you bought a Rod of Ages purchase a Frozen Heart.

- If you bought a Heart of Gold build Randuins Omen.

Late Game
- If enemy team has a lot of AP damage buy a Force of Nature.

- If enemy team has a lot of AP damage and you want to DEAL damage buy an Abyssal Scepter.

- If enemy team has a lot of AD damage Get a Thornmail.

- If enemy team has a lot of AD damage and you want to DEAL damage buy a Zhonya's Hourglass (As soon as you pull in team fights and you use your ult and slow Zhonyas if they target you first).

Conclusion
Nautilus is very hard to master, and he WILL die a lot. Keep in mind that so long as you initiate correctly, and help your carry out early game, no matter how bad your score may look you did your job. Good luck and I hope this guide helped.
