Interview with Rocket League Player Metsanauris of TSM

I chat with Metsanauris of TSM on the team's recent success and what it was like being acquired by such a well known organization.

Otto 'Metsanauris' Kaipiainen is a professional Rocket League player who was just acquired by TSM alongside EyeIgnite and remkoe, previously known as We Dem Girlz. He and the team have shared in a lot of recent success and are one of the teams to keep your eyes on this coming season. I had a chat with Metsanauris on the move to TSM, role models, and his goals for the coming year.

You began your professional RL career a few years back now. What was the initial appeal of the game to you and what were you mainly playing before RL?

Metsanauris: I really wasn't that big of a "gamer" before Rocket League. I only played multiplayer games with my friends usually, never that competitively. Then I saw this Kronovi video on Youtube and the game looked so fun and unique, like no other game. I tried to convince my friends to buy it with me for months until I gave up and just bought it myself and have loved the game ever since.

When you first began playing Rocket League, did you ever think you would achieve the success that you’ve achieved thus far?

Metsanauris: As I said, I never played games that competitively, and never thought I'm even that good at games. So, I didn't even think I would reach the highest rank in this game - not to even mention all the competitive success.

Everyone knew it would only be a matter of time before We Dem Girlz would be picked up, especially after winning ELEAGUE – what was the process like in getting together with TSM?

Metsanauris: We had been in talks with TSM for a while, and everything went very smoothly during the process and I couldn't be happier with how everything turned out.

For what you’re able to talk about, were there any other organizations interested besides TSM? If so, what made you guys decide to go with TSM in the end?

Metsanauris: We were in talks with a couple other organisations, but obviously TSM is one of the biggest brands and organisations in esports, so it would've been ridiculous not to go with them. All of us love TSM and this really is a dream come true for us.

Will there be any changes in the way you guys practice, scrim, etc? Increased hours? Or will everything pretty much continue in how you guys had been going about everything?

Metsanauris: We have been working hard even before signing with TSM and we have no reason to slow down now. We are very competitive people always trying to get better.

How would you personally describe what it’s been like coming together with WDG and playing with remkoe and EyeIgnite?

Metsanauris: Ever since I joined, it's been a fresh start for me honestly. I was struggling with my role in the previous team and it started to really affect my confidence. Ever since joining WDG I've been growing my confidence back up and we've kept getting better and better. Remkoe and Eyeignite are amazing players and we just seem to fit together really well.

Ending 2018 by winning ELEAGUE must feel incredible. What are your main goals for the team going into 2019 and beyond?

Metsanauris: We're always trying to improve, so we're just trying to win more titles and get more good placings. And obviously winning RLCS would be the dream come true.

What other teams and/or players do you look forward to playing against in the coming year?

Metsanauris: A lot of roster moves are happening, so I'm excited to play against all the new rosters from around the world that are going to form during the off-season.

Is there anyone that you would say has really been a role model for you in the RL scene?

Metsanauris: I watched a lot of Kronovi, Paschy, and Kuxir back in the day, and they've acted as role models for me during the early days. A little bit later one has to be Amoney, absolutely loved watching his stream and I even bought his merch shirt.

As a final, easy question – if you could be a professional player in any other game besides Rocket League, what would it be?

Metsanauris: Probably CS:GO. That game has so many tournaments and players get to travel around the world all the time. Hoping Rocket League will have that many tournaments at some point.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer some questions for us and I wish you the best of luck moving forward! Is there anyone that you would like to give a shoutout to?

Metsanauris: Shoutout to everyone that supports us. I read every message and they really mean the world to me.
