Easy Zerg Roach Timing Build

An Easy build for the bronze-gold Zerg player in Starcraft 2 Heart of the Swarm!

Introduction

Hello everyone! I am very excited to bring to you my first article! Today we are going to be taking a look at an easily executed timing attack that is perfect for new Zergs and bronze-gold league Zergs alike! This build order will give you +1/+1 roaches on a 2 base economy to steamroll your opponent while still staying safe and building a good infastructure. This build will help teach you about the general zerg mechanics as well as an understanding of the tech structure and how the upgrades work. This build is also viable for any matchup! So without further ado lets get right into it!

Build Order

9- overlord
14- spawning pool
15- hatchery
15- queen
17- overlord
*1 set of zerglings for scouting or defensive purposes
@first queen: start second queen
@natural hatchery: start third queen
@second queen: start fourth queen
~5:00 minutes: double extractor
@100 gas: lair+ 2 evolution chambers+ 3rd extractor+ roach warren
@evolution chambers: start +1 missle attack and +1 armor upgrades
@lair: start roach speed (glial reconstruction)
Push right before the +1/+1 upgrades finish!

Explanation

Now that we have the build order itself layed out, we can look at some of the specifics. The set of zerglings you create can be used for either scouting or defensive purposes depending on if you feel like you didn't see enough with your overlord scout or you are facing pressure from some pesky reapers or probes poking around. 2 of your 4 queens should be used for injects on the hatcheries to keep up your larvae count, the other 2 will be along your natural to help spread creep and ward off agression. Put 3 workers into each extractor when you morph them around the 5 minute mark and continue to make drones.

It is important to only build drones until you start your upgrades so you can build a stable economy. The only tricky part of this build is morphing the 2 evolution chambers, roach warren, and third extractor at once but after you practice it enough it will become second nature! I highly recommend using the 2 evolution chambers and roach warren to help block off your natural expansion to funnel enemy units and prevent them from have easy access to flood your base.

An example is given in the photograph above. As soon as you start the upgrades you can cut droning and focus purely on roaches to overwhelm your opponent with your push. When the upgrades are a few seconds away from finishing, push out with your entire army and attack the enemy base.

Follow Up

In many cases this push will kill the enemy but in case the attack fails, you can easily follow it up with a third hatchery and a hydralisk den to form a roach/hydra composition. Continue to research upgrades and add a macro hatchery after your 3rd.

Conclusions

There you have it! This build helps you focus on all aspects of the Zerg race, queen injects, creep spread, tech structure, and upgrades! Although the build may seem easy, you should always open a custom game and practice it first by yourself to get the basics down. You may need 5 games or 500 games to get it right but practice and execution are the key to pulling off a build correctly. I know those feelings or anxiety can creep in (zerg pun) when it comes time to try the build in a real game but just remember what you have to focus on and keep pushing forward, the only way to improve at something is if you actually attempt it and learn from your mistakes! Until next time my fellow Zergs I bid you farewell and wish you luck with this build and all your ladder endeavors!
