Gamsu Shares His Thoughts on Returning to the LCS

Gamsu on his returns to Dignitas: “I know 100 Thieves hasn’t won against Dignitas yet, I want to keep doing that!”

A lot has happened over the years, and Noh "Gamsu" Yeong-jin has a professional story unlike any other player to date. He started his professional League of Legends career in Korea back in 2013, moved to the NALCS to join Dignitas in 2015, went to the EULCS in 2016, and then switched to professional Overwatch! Last year, Gamsu returned to professional League of Legends, and he's now found his way back home to Dignitas QNTMPAY.

Just before the announcement that he was signing with Dignitas QNTMPAY, I was able to speak with Gamsu about his journey and what he thinks of the roster's chances in the upcoming 2022 LCS Summer Split.

Some older League of Legends fans will remember you (especially Dignitas fans), because you were our top laner in 2015! After that, you went to Europe and played for Fnatic for a split, and then set your sights on Overwatch. So, I wanted to start off by asking you, is there anything you have learned from Overwatch that will help you move forward as a League of Legends pro player again?

Gamsu: When I was a League player, my playstyle was really selfish, and I didn’t really communicate with my teammates. In Overwatch, I learned a lot about communicating with my teammates and the importance of building synergy together. That’s the biggest thing I learned.

On the note of returning to League of Legends, what made you want to come back to the LCS, and specifically, Dignitas QNTMPAY?

Gamsu: Since I started practicing League again, I wanted to come back to LCS again. Since coming back, I won the Finals in Proving Grounds, and then went to the Finals again this Spring. I think Dignitas gave me a chance to come back to the LCS because of that, and I thought it was a great opportunity for me. I think with me playing with Dignitas again, we could do really well.

Since you last played in the LCS before franchising, can you pinpoint any major changes that you have noticed now that you’re coming back?

Gamsu: I think there’s lots of support in the league now. I think players are being treated better than before, and there’s lots of support overall. It’s been a good change!

I know when you were previously on Dignitas in 2015, CoreJJ was your teammate. You mentioned that he was a big reason why you decided to try to come back to the LCS in an interview with Travis Gafford. What was that conversation like with CoreJJ, have you told him that you’re back in the LCS yet, and, since you won’t be on the same team as him this split, are you looking forward to playing against him?

Gamsu: Yeah, I was hesitating to play League again. So I messaged CoreJJ, and he confidently said I could do it again. That’s why I started again, and I’m really happy I did! I haven’t told him I joined the team, but I’ll definitely let him know when I can! I’m not sure if we have ever played against each other - at least, not in any major tournament, but maybe in Korean amateur teams - so I am excited to.

Continuing on the note of playing against other players, are there any top lakers that you are looking forward to playing against?

Gamsu: Yeah! I’m excited to play against Ssumday! Because I was on 100 Thieves before Dignitas, and I always thought he was a really good top laner! I also know that 100 Thieves hasn’t won against Dignitas yet and so I want to keep doing that!

Only one top laner is currently playing in the LCS that you would have played against back in 2015, which is Impact. So I’m curious, what do you think of the top lane talent as a whole? Do you think it’s going to be tough competition?

Gamsu: Yeah, I think it’s definitely more competitive right now. There’s lots of good NA talent, and I’m really executed to play against them all and get better.

It’s your first split back in the LCS. What is your goal as a player for this split?

Gamsu: I want to go to Worlds, but the realistic goal for me is playoffs. I want to communicate a lot in games, and I’m really excited to play with River. He’s a really good Jungler, and I think the team overall is really good, too! I want to be a supportive player to my teammates.

Speaking of your teammates, the roster finished just outside of the playoffs in Spring, with you now a part of the team, where do you think you guys will finish this split?

Gamsu: I always want to be first, but I just joined. I think if everything works out well, we can make it to top three!

In the previous split, Dignitas played around the bot lane quite heavily. If this continues into this split, it will leave you playing weak-side a lot. Is this a playstyle you are comfortable with, or will you bring more attention to the top lane as an opportunity for a win condition?

Gamsu: Since I just joined, I don’t think I can make really big changes. So, I really just want to be the person who can play for the team. I’m really happy to play for the team, so I’m down to play whatever my team wants me to play!

When I was told you would be joining Dignitas QNTMPAY, the first thing that came to mind was a highlight from you back on Fnatic in 2016. If you remember, it was your 1v2 as Olaf against Origen in the first week of the split! I know Olaf isn’t really a top laner at the moment despite some promising solo queue stats recently, but do we have any chance of seeing you bring out Olaf again?

Gamsu: Yeah, I remember! Yes, well, I think the recent change on Olaf is actually pretty good for the top lane! I might try some in solo queue and see what I can do!

Many older fans remember Chef Gamsu, so I wanted to know if you are still as interested in these hobbies as you once were, and if you think these hobbies help your play in League of Legends.

Gamsu: Yes, they make me happy. If someone ever wants my food, I’m happy to cook them food! I think it’s good to have other hobbies to be healthy.

I would like to thank Gamsu again for taking the time to sit down with me and review his history in esports and his goals going into the next split. Our interview was conducted just before his signing announcement, during the Mid-Season Invitational. Be sure to stay tuned for the Summer Split schedule to cheer for Gamsu's "re-inauguration" match and support Dignitas QNTMPAY in their push for the playoffs.
