DIG Spica on the current meta, his team’s performance, and what the LCS will look like next season.
Another highly anticipated return to the LCS after a split off, Mingyi “Spica” Lu sits down with us to discuss his team’s performance so far in the split with the new format and how good the team actually is!
How do you feel about your team's performance so far this split?
Spica: “I think we are definitely still getting better. When we first got together, I hadn’t played for a split and neither had Zven or Licorice. We were still fresh coming off a break so we definitely had rough patches coming in so I think we are just focusing on getting better each and every day.”
What do you see as the biggest weakness of Dignitas so far?
Spica: “I think the main weakness is getting on the same page for how we want to play the game. It’s taking a while to figure that out and for everyone to execute. I think we are getting better as we are slowly playing with each other more and having a default style we can rely on.”
How do you feel about the current meta and how it suits your playstyle?
Spica: “The meta right now is basically AP junglers and AD mids. I do enjoy a lot of AP junglers even when they weren’t meta. I feel comfortable with every AP jungler, and they are fun to play as well. A lot of metas have junglers playing tanks so this is a nice change.”
How has your experience been transitioning to Dignitas, and what are the differences compared to your previous teams?
Spica: “I’m pretty used to how fast the off-season can change. The biggest transition was going from not scrimming every day to now scrimming everyday. I had a lot of freedom when I was streaming and on my own schedule so changing back to this strict schedule was a bit rough for me at first.”
Who do you see as the toughest competitors in the LCS this split, and why?
Spica: “I think reducing it to eight teams was way better for competition in the LCS. A few years back with 10 teams, there were always one or two teams that you feel like you could win against no matter what you do and now every team has a chance to win and you have to fight a lot for every game. I think TL is still the best team even though in our game against them we made it clear they had some glaring weaknesses and I think with some more time we can definitely compete with everyone.”
What has been your most memorable moment in your professional career so far?
Spica: “My most memorable is winning my first split. Coming in as a rookie and playing with people I grew up watching and then winning the split is like the perfect storyline. Recently, it’s actually been playing board games with teammates at Dignitas like Secret Hitler we’ve been playing everyday, and we’ve been looking forward to it every day!”
What are your thoughts on the future of the LCS and the development of the professional League of Legends scene after the announced changes being implemented for next year?
Spica: “I think it’s going to be exciting at least. We are going to have players from LLA and CBLOL so there will be some rivalries that rise which is exciting. From what I’ve read, the only thing I don’t really like is that we lose an MSI spot.”
What do you think about the recent International Olympic Committee announcement to create an esports Olympics?
Spica: “Honestly, I haven’t really thought about that. It’s a good thing for esports to be recognized globally like this so that maybe kids will want to pick up the game and increase the talent pipeline in NA at least!”
Finally, I have to ask you, how excited are you for the new season of Arcane and what are your predictions for what this final season will bring?
Spica: “Honestly, it’s been a while. The first season came out in 2021, right? I remember watching it then with my girlfriend. I’m excited, it’s been a great show and made the game pretty popular after that. The way it ended too was pretty good and I just really want to see Warwick and Singed. I don’t think they officially have said that’s who they are yet, right? But seeing more new characters will be really cool. That’s probably what I’m looking forward to most.”
If you’re looking forward to the new Arcane season as well, maybe you need to pick up a few more games on Vi! We also spoke with Spica to get his insights on how to play Vi!
We’d like to thank Spica for taking the time to sit down with us to discuss the team and give us his insights on the future of the team, and the professional scene as a whole!
