Ellektrikk Interviews Team Dignitas CSGO Streamer Pterodactylsftw

Ever wonder what it's like to be a CSGO streamer? Ellektrikk's got the answers for you.

One Team Dignitas streamer interviews another! In this session, Elle "Ellektrikk" Lockyer talked with our CSGO streamer Sheila, aka "Pterodactylsftw," about her profession as a streamer, discussing topics including the adversity that female streamers face and the difficulties of balancing her time. Although we had a couple of cats as surprise guests, we were unable to get their thoughts on the situation. Provided just below is the recorded version of the interview, with a transcription available under that for those craving a bit of reading. Enjoy!

How did you get into streaming in CSGO in particular?

Pterodactylsftw: I wanted to stream years and years ago back when I played League of Legends. I had a few friends who were like "Well why don't you stream League? It would be really fun to watch you" but I never had good enough Internet. Once I moved to California a year and a half ago, I just picked it up as something fun to do and it just ended up being a lot bigger than I was expecting, but I started playing CSGO mostly because League got a little boring for me and my friends who I played League with. They said "Why don't you try out CS?" and I just fell in love with it.

How do you interact with your viewers in CSGO?

Pterodactylsftw: I usually don't do any viewer games or anything with my viewers because I'm super competitive and I get really ragey, so I don't want to yell at my viewers. I have done sub wars before where my friends' subs and my subs all played together and that's a lot more fun, but I usually just interact with them through chat and they make fun of me when I miss shots, so it's a good time.

What do you enjoy the most about being a streamer?

Pterodactylsftw: Honestly it's the people that you meet through streaming. I've made really, really good friends from my chat and it's always entertaining. You get some weird people who say some mean things, but a lot of the people are really sweet. I think that's my favorite part.

I know you've been streaming for a while, but do you see streaming as a gateway into other eSports, or are you content with staying where you're at?

Pterodactylsftw: I would absolutely love to do something else in eSports. I mean I love streaming, but I know it's not something that's gonna last forever, but I really would love to do something else. I'd really love to do something like what you're doing. Interview someone, or just be able to give something more than just streaming.

As a female streamer, we encounter a lot of issues, but is there any particular issue with being a female CSGO streamer that streamers for other games maybe wouldn't see?

Pterodactylsftw: I think we all have the same issues just by being a woman. I take the game very seriously and I want to be the best that I can be. Even when I'm trying my hardest, people still come in and are like "Wow you're so bad" or "Wow you're a girl you suck." It's not like I'm not trying, but I think that all girls get that. I don't think you're ever not going to face adversity just from being a woman. People are just like "Oh you're a girl. You suck. Bye." I'm not up in the thousands of viewers, but the good amount of viewers that I have are here to watch me as a person and they're here to watch the game. I know that and they know that. They're amazing. I love all of my viewers. Then you get the few new people who will come in and say what they want, but they learn quick. I love who I have now.

You also play on a CSGO team. Do you find it difficult to combine your streaming schedule with your practice schedule?

Pterodactylsftw: Absolutely. I stream at 9 or 10 PM Pacific Time, and I stream until about 6 AM. For practice, because my team are all West Coast and they work too, we start practicing at 9 PM. Sometimes we practice from 9 until 11 or midnight, then I don't get to stream until even later. I could stream in the day, but I don't like that. It's been really tough to balance the streaming and practice. Plus I'm playing Counter Strike for 4 hours a day practicing and then I have to stream it for another however many hours. It's hard but it's worth it.

Because your sleep schedule is a little opposite from mine, what does a typical day look like for you?

Pterodactylsftw: Let's see...I go to sleep around 6 or 7 AM. I wake up around 1 or 2 PM. I'll get up, eat, shower, get ready, clean, watch movies or something, and I have to go shopping or run errands I'll go do that. Depending on practice, since sometimes we practice around 4 or 5 and sometimes 9, I'll just wait until whenever we have practice and then I'll start my stream. I'm home all day and then I'm on the computer all day and that's kinda what I do. With my days off I'll go out and do some fun things, but it's mostly just Counter Strike all day, every day...and then some K-dramas in between.

Since you're on this team right now, do you have any hopes of becoming a CSGO pro?

Pterodactylsftw: That would be the dream. I don't think anybody plays something just to be "okay" at it. I don't see it happening, but it would be amazing.

If you could put together a team with anybody, who would you want your 4 teammates to be?

Pterodactylsftw: Umm....OCEAN, OCEAN, OCEAN, and OCEAN. The big Odeag. Just find 4 of him. But realistically, I don't know. It's so tough to think about. There's so many good players. Happy from Team EnVyUs is definitely one of my favorite players. Device from ex-TSM (currently Team ?) is a really good player too. GuardiaN is a better AWPer than me, but I would like him on my team anyway, but I'd still want to AWP. I don't know, that's a tough one. I'm just gonna go with 4 OCEANs still.

Do you have any shoutouts to anybody?

Pterodactylsftw: Thank you Team Dignitas for giving me the opportunity to do what I do and for supporting me in what I'm doing. All of my lovely viewers, and Mom. Thanks Mom for giving birth to me.

You can follow both of these lovely ladies on Twitter (@DIGEllektrikk and @Pterodactylsftw), as well as @TeamDignitas itself! Thanks for stopping by, and have a wonderful rest of the day!
