Everything You Need to Know About Chrome in Fortnite

Take an in-depth look at the chrome that has hit the island. Learn about the property, uses, benefits and drawbacks to having and using chrome splash in their inventory.

In Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 4, one of the biggest changes to the visual aesthetic, besides the purple trees and mushrooms turning to autumn colors, was the addition to the chrome patches on the map. Players quickly learned that this wasn’t just a visual change, but the addition of the Chrome Splash has changed many aspects of the game. Let’s take an in-depth look at where you can find Chrome Splash, how to use it, advantages, and disadvantages.

Where Can You Find Chrome?

Chrome Splash can be found in many areas as ground loot, or it can be farmed by pickaxing items that are already “chromed” in-game. You are looking for what looks like glass canisters filled with a silver liquid. This is transportable Chrome Splash and a total of eight can be carried in a stack. Going to an area like Herald’s Sanctum, Shimmering Shrine, or other areas infected by the spread of chrome will guarantee a player a full stack with a little harvesting. It may also be hard to overlook the awesome Chrome tornado that is permanently on the map near Herald’s Sanctum.

What Can I Do With Chrome?

Chrome is a versatile substance and worth getting to know in this season of Fortnite. When using Chrome Splash, you use it just like Chug Splash, using your “aim” button to direct where the splash will land and using your “fire” button to toss out the silvery liquid. Once an item, object, is splashed the chrome effect is permanent. Once a player is chromed, the effect lasts for around 40 seconds.

Splash the Environment

When Chrome Splash is used on building materials, it will turn an entire wall silver. Once a building is in this state, a player can interact with the wall to essentially “phase” through the wall without pickaxing through it. You cannot phase through ceilings or floors, and you will also not phase through the map if you throw Chrome Splash on the actual ground. Using Chrome Splash on an enemy build can help you quickly gain access to a player hiding defensively within a build, and may take him by surprise, giving you a tactical advantage.

Splash Chests

When you throw Chrome Splash on a chest, it will turn the weapons inside it into EvoChrome weapons, so you don’t have to continually search chests looking for those guns if you are after the milestone achievements for evolving EvoChrome weapons. Unfortunately, even if you splash a blue chest, you will not get a legendary or better Evo weapon–these weapons are always created green and need to be evolved to upgrade the weapon color.

Movement

Once a player is Chromed, they have the ability to go into “blobify” mode. This will turn a player into a glob of chrome which has some unique advantages. The first thing that blobify mode does is allows the player to move at a faster rate of speed. Also, this will allow the player to utilize a “dash” function which will propel the user forward, even mid-jump, much like a Zero Point Fish did last season. This is especially handy when trying to move up a small hill you would need to build a single ramp for or traversing an area that normally might be just-out-of-reach with a normal jump. Jumping while in Chrome form is a no-risk situation, because while blobified, you do not take fall damage.

Chrome a Vehicle

Another added effect for the Chrome Splash is that splashing a vehicle and then sitting and riding in it will heal the player slowly over time. This is a great way to heal while you are traveling to the next circle. Not to mention it adds an extra shine to your car’s paint job!

Other Advantages

When you have Chrome Splash enabled, it also makes you immune to fire damage, which is a great advantage if your opponents are carrying Fireflies. Also, when in blob form, the first hit of a bullet will rip you out of blob form. However, you will not take damage from that bullet strike, only the ones that follow if you do not quickly re-chrome yourself. Being in blob form also makes you a smaller target for enemy bullets, but you can also use this to your advantage as you reboot a teammate. Hiding as a blob as you reboot may give you the few extra seconds you need to successfully accomplish this task and will give you one bullet strike before you take damage. It also compresses your form so that you are smaller and more difficult to see if snipers are trying to take you out at the reboot van.

Disadvantages of Chrome Splash

While the advantages of Chrome Splash are plentiful, there are not too many negative side effects to using the silvery substance. Once you splash yourself and go into blob mode, you will show up to enemy opponents as a white blob if they have visualized sound effects enabled, similar to if you are riding an animal. Another possible disadvantage is running out of Chrome Splash effects at an inopportune moment, or not carrying enough to dash away. Because a player can only carry eight Chrome Splashes to a stack and the effect only lasts forty seconds, that is only a total of a little over five minutes in blob form. Knowing when to splash yourself to use the effects to your advantage may take some trial and error. Also, you have to be aware of the fact that other players may use the positive effects against you, so if you are not prepared for an enemy player to phase through your wall, this may take you by surprise and could be why you may lose the victory.

Conclusion

Regardless if you love or hate Chrome Splash, it looks to be spreading across the map, and looks to be here to stay in Season 4. Mastering the use of this versatile substance may give you the edge over your opponents this season. Now that you have some tips and tricks, picking up a vial in-game and experimenting with the effects are your best bet for getting the hang of using Chrome Splash to your advantage.
