The Legends of Runeterra Patch 3.8 or The Worldwalker Expansion was released on May 25. It contains 65 new cards that include four new champions and the first Runeterran champions with their unique Origins keywords along with other new keywords such as Spawn and Boon. The new expansion also ushers the major update for the PVE mode called The Path of Champions 2.0 and balance changes to a few followers.
Origins Explained
The Worldwalker expansion has introduced new champions with no region, and they are called Runeterran champions. Runeterran champions open a lot of possibilities due to their unique deckbuilding rules.
One of the first Runeterran champions to be released is Jhin and another is Bard. Jhin’s Origin lets you add any card with “Skill” and because of this, it allows the player to combine cards from different regions.
The Origin mechanic also gives Runeterran champions additional abilities. Another example would be Jhin’s ability to cast Lotus Trap after seeing three allied spells or skills activate, the ability also works even when Jhin is in the player’s hand.
I believe that the Origin mechanic is interesting, and it will allow players to experiment with putting cards together to synergize with Runeterran champions. We may have to see a lot of homebrew decks in this patch because of Origins.
New Keywords
Spawn – This keyword allows the player to summon at 1|1 Tentacle if the player does not have one and if the player has one, give it +1|+1 for every Spawn keyword activated.
Boon – This keyword plants chimes into random cards in the user’s deck which activates when drawn. The first Boon introduced to the game is Chimes which when activated, grants +1|+1 to a random ally in hand.
New Champions
Annie
Annie is an interesting champion to play as during her attack she deals 2 to her blocker and if her blocker is dead or gone, the Nexus will be damaged instead. She levels up when she sees you play six spells or skills, increasing her stats to 1|3 and dealing 3 damage to her blocker or Nexus upon attacking.
I use Annie with Jhin as they have the same requirement to level up and because Annie’s support cards like Tibbers and Manasoul Student synergize with Jhin very well.
Illaoi
Upon seeing the reveal for Illaoi, it gave me the same feeling as Viego but Illaoi does not summon ephemeral units, Illaoi focuses on a single unit. Illaoi’s support cards like The Sea’s Voice allow the Tentacle to grow and be a threat in the early to mid-game.
One of the player’s main goals is to utilize the Tentacle to pose a threat while making it survive every attack round. I have tried pairing Illaoi with Bard and I must that they do possess an awesome synergy.
Bard
The Wandering Caretaker is one of the first Runeterran champions to be released in the game. Bard’s unique Origin allows players to build decks with units that plant chimes during deckbuilding. Bard’s mechanic is interesting and kind of leans on the defensive side because you need to utilize the chimes to make your in-hand or in-play units stronger.
I have paired Bard with Illaoi to build up tentacles’ power throughout the game along with Illaoi’s support cards.
Jhin
The Virtuoso is one of the most interesting and most awaited champions in this patch. Jhin’s Origin revolves around the usage of skills and spells in the game. It allows players to build a deck composed of cards that are Skills. Jhin’s level up condition if the player has played 12+ spells or skills in the game and every after the third spell or skill has been played, Jhin sends out a Lotus Trap that deals 1 damage to the user’s nexus.
Personally, Jhin is my most used champ since the release of the expansion because he synergizes with a lot of cards. I’ve been using him with Swain and I am doing a couple of experiments with Ezreal and Annie.
The Path of Champions 2.0
The Worldwalker expansion is bringing a major update for the PVE mode. As the game mode has been overhauled new regions will be introduced in the game mode such as Noxus and Demacia not only that but the difficulty has been adjusted accordingly, new relics have been added and the progression system has been enhanced.
The new progression includes “Legend Levels” that allow the player to power up the whole champion roster. There is also “Champion Star Level” that gives champions unique abilities and unlocks new parts of their adventures. World Adventures has also been introduced which allows players to test the skill and power of the champions.
Pulsefire Event
The Pulsefire event will be launching upon the release of patch 3.8.0 and it comes with a lot of new emotes, guardians, card backs, icons, and a lot of chests, capsules, and cards. A special event pass will also be available which allows players to access special missions to earn more rewards.
Buying the pass before June 15 grants an exclusive quest that gives players 10 Energy Orbs and a rare Prismatic Chest. It also grants players an exclusive path with more premium rewards and immediately unlocks the Tibbers guardian.
Conclusion
The Worldwalker expansion is one of the most anticipated expansions in the game and with the new mechanics and new champions released it opens a lot of exciting possibilities for homebrew decks. The current expansion makes the core game and even the PVE mode more interesting and fun to play with.
