Fortnite: The Ultimate Mentality Guide

Having bad luck in Fortnite? Your mentality plays a huge role in your success and perspective. In this article you’ll learn to flip that mindset around and be the luckiest player in the world!

If you want to get better in Fortnite, you’ll have to master more than being able to pull off trick shots and amazing builds. A massive factor to your success or failure is the mental approach you go into each game with. In this article, we’ll look at how to develop the right mentality and teach you to look back on each of your mistakes with a constructive mindset.

Victory Royales aren't Everything!

It’s a big mistake to hyperfocus purely on winning, as without enough thought spared towards improving your gameplay, you’ll simply be doomed to loop in a repetitive gameplay cycle. The only thing you’ll achieve with that is feeling worse with every loss, getting frustrated, and developing an inferiority complex. If you simply adjusted that line of thought to winning each fight you get into, Victory Royales will naturally occur as a byproduct.

This allows you to greatly narrow the scope of your focus and see what went wrong. A win is no longer a victory royale, but instead, every kill you get. You’ll find yourself way less stressed as now you are allowing yourself to be a winner. The battle between you and the enemy engaging you is all that matters, find a way to position yourself at an advantage, and dominate them.

You are the #1 Fortnite player!

You need to learn not to get scared and overthink during your matches, if you’re watching an enemy run straight towards you and you're panicking as there is “no way you can win”, then odds are you’ve already lost. A cool and calm head is the only way to prevent your screen from simply becoming a mess of color and to properly aim.

If you act like you're simply the best however, you won't fear the enemy running at you, as obviously you are simply more skilled than they are. Think of them as a much-needed loot box being delivered to you! In order to improve, we need to be presented with stress. This applies everywhere in life, like the gym, and Fortnite is certainly not an exception. By learning to cope against great players, then easier opponents won't stand a chance!

Laugh at Your Mistakes

We need to remember that we all make mistakes. Even Bugha (the winner of the Fortnite international championship) had to start as a noob! Only one player can win in the end, so you need to embrace dying and stop fearing it. Try and imagine your death from the enemy's perspective, it could have been quite a funny one. If you learn not to take it so seriously, you’ll find way more enjoyment and develop a stronger willingness to improve, it’ll also make you more fun to play with as nobody enjoys a sore loser.

Always Be Positive!

Did you do something really well earlier in the game before you died? Fantastic, you need to celebrate that and try your best to do that again and again. Staying positive and telling yourself you always have a chance is going to allow you to put all your effort into every aspect of the game. After all, thinking that a fight is hopeless before you’ve even died isn’t going to inspire hope. As long as you’re alive and kicking, there is a chance you’ll come out on top, so stay positive and fight for it!

If you die early, be glad that you didn’t waste too much time and be happy that you get to try again. On the other side of that coin, if you died late into a game, be proud that you made it that far! If you never allow yourself to be a loser in your mind, then you can never lose.

If you feel like the unluckiest person in the world, almost as if there is some higher power out to get you, it’s because your mindset is the exact opposite of what we’re suggesting here. In that case, you can never win! Stay positive and have fun.

Never Let the Player Count Scare You!

Believe me when I say, seeing that only three players are left in the game is way more intimidating than there being, say, eighty. You are locked in fairly close proximity to the apex predators of the lobby, and you’ve somehow found yourself amongst them.

Never panic, you’ll need to set yourself for success. Build that tower you’ll need to protect yourself, or if you’re a no-builds player, claim the high ground before somebody else can. These end players are your best opportunity to learn how to improve, so get excited and fight!

Always Have a Plan

If you don’t have a plan, then you’re going to be the victim of someone else's. Simply running around isn’t great for your RNG. RNG is essentially your luck in the game. For example, which guns you get or what items you find. It’s best to have a plan that works, then to always need to create a new one based on your circumstances.

If an enemy is building, this plan could be to simply prevent them from taking high ground over you by destroying their builds. Keep testing and see what works. I personally like to carry around a fuel tank I can throw then fire at to burn their entire structure down, with them inside it.

Practice, Practice, Practice.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that playing is practice that will make you better! It will just cement what you are already doing. You need to practice with intent, and that will allow you to secure good habits, which overtime will combine to make you an incredibly skilled opponent.

It can be easy to look at what you did wrong and understand it, but if you don’t adapt and use that knowledge in your next game, then it’s worthless. Say that your enemy had cover, and you didn’t, making it easy for them to hit you and avoid damage. You need to make sure you always take cover in every game after that, and practice to have it be second nature. Actively make the effort to change your gameplay, going into autopilot in every round helps nobody but the enemies you face off against.

At the end of the day, many players have hundreds of hours! If you are just starting out, it’ll take a little while to catch up and that’s perfectly normal. The mentality you have will be utterly crucial and allow you to push on ahead, so keep on pushing!
