How Champion Mastery Works in 2025 - League of Legends

In this article, we’re explaining how the system works, and what kind of rewards you can expect to unlock along the way.

Champion Mastery in League of legends is one of the best ways to show off your skill and commitment to your favorite champions. It will track your performance throughout every game you play, giving you, your allies, and your opponents a better picture of who you are as a player.

How Does Champion Mastery Work in 2025?

Champion Mastery is often viewed as a badge of honor for many League of Legends players. It’s a very simple way to express your love and dedication to your main champions while showing off to others. While many players invest money into cosmetics like skins, chromas, and other special features like Eternals, Champion Mastery is free and completely skill and time-based. No credit card required!

The system underwent a major overhaul last season, in patch 14.10. While the concepts remain the same, the methods of leveling up your Mastery and the overall number of times you can raise your Mastery Level have changed.

What Are Mastery Points?

Mastery Points (MP) are similar to Summoner Levels (sometimes called “Account Levels”) in that it helps convey how experienced you are in the game. MP specifically shows how much time (or how well) you’ve played a particular champion. It is not by any means a perfect one-to-one system, though—wins will earn you points much faster than losses, even if you perform well on your own. These points do not expire or reset as new seasons or splits begin.

Having high mastery on a champion does not always indicate skill, but it can give you some context heading into the early laning phase. For example, if you’re laning against someone with almost no mastery, they might be brand new to their champion or just testing someone new out. On the other hand, if you see they have over a million points, it’s safe to say that they probably understand the champion’s mechanics well and might have some unexpected tricks up their sleeve.

Since there’s no limit to the number of MP a player can earn, and some players have gotten up to tens of millions of MP, (see the worldwide ranking for highest MP here), is there a better way to gauge what the number of Mastery Points actually means? Once numbers start getting into hundreds of thousands, it can feel tough to feel out where people sit skill-wise. That’s where Mastery Levels come in.

What Are Mastery Levels and Marks of Mastery?

Mastery Levels are a simpler way of measuring and quantifying MP. While the scale can range from zero to millions, Mastery Levels provide a clearer picture of progression thanks to the additional performance requirements that go into leveling up. There are 10 initial levels of Champion Mastery, but the climb won’t stop there. You can actually level up your Mastery infinitely. After level 10, each level will require the same static number of MP and Marks of Mastery. Consistency will be key to improving your skills and level!

Marks of Mastery are special milestones that make leveling up a bit more complicated, thanks to their specific performance requirements. The number of marks needed per level will depend on your current Mastery Level and how many you’ve already earned this split. You can easily check the requirements for earning Marks on your champion’s page in the “Collection” tab, under “Mastery.” There, you’ll also see a timeline with requirements for each level, and when the quests will reset!

Here’s a breakdown of the basic requirements for each Mastery Level. The numbers on the right show how many MP you’ll need to progress beyond the previous level. It is not a total sum. For example, for every level after Mastery 10, you’ll need to earn 11,000 MP and 3 Marks to gain a Mastery Level.

How Can I Earn Mastery Points?

Players can earn mastery points in most game modes, including Summoner’s Rift, ARAM, and rotating game modes (except for Arena). You’ll earn MP by playing your champion well against other players. Riot games also notes that the number of MP gained per game changes depending on a lot of factors that can change from game to game

  • If you are playing in a premade lobby with other players
  • You can earn small percentage-based increases for each player who joined you in your lobby before queuing.
  • Your personal/individual performance
  • The qualifications here will change depending on both the champion you are playing, as well as what role you are playing them in.
  • If your game was a win or loss
  • Losses grant significantly less MP than a victory, even if you perform identically (same creep score, K/D/A, vision score etc.)
  • How you played in comparison to any other players in the region on that same combination of champion and role.

The rating you receive after every game is based on how well you perform your role’s basic duties. Those duties will depend on what champion you are playing, and what role you are in. If you are playing Karma Mid, you should focus more on farming and dealing damage. If you’re playing her as a Support, though, you will want to avoid stealing CS and will need to prioritize upping your vision score and protection done through shields.

Ultimately, you want to make sure that you are on the top of your game if you want to rack up your Mastery Points and Marks of Mastery. You might have noticed that there is a lot of overlap between what you need to do to earn both of those—that’s by design. If you focus on the fundamentals of your role, whether it be farming, dealing damage, shielding your allies, or killing jungle camps to secure objectives, you’ll be sure to succeed! Staying on track in game will get you MP faster, but also help your team on their way to victory.

What Rewards Come with Champion Mastery?

Aside from the sense of pride and satisfaction, leveling your Champion Mastery comes with a few fun ways to show off! From Mastery Levels 1-10, you’ll gain access to a new version of the widely used Mastery Emote. You’ve probably seen players using it (or even spamming it) after a great trade or a really close fight. Be sure to not overuse it—spamming the emote (Ctrl+6 or /masterybadge) can come off as disrespectful.

Conclusion

Champion Mastery is a free, very rewarding way to show your dedication and skill with all of your favorite champions. By leveling up, you can show your expertise to others and gain some insight into your teammates’ and opponents’ skill levels. Earning Mastery Points and Marks of Mastery comes down to being effective in matches, and making the most of what your champion can do. By focusing on the fundamentals of your chosen champion and role, you’ll be sure to be flexing your Mastery in no time!
