How Role Quests Work in League of Legends

Find out more about the recently added quests for each playable role in League of Legends. Pay attention to your lane’s strengths and find out how to maximize your LP gains here!

Role quests are special types of missions given to each player in an assigned position at the start of a game. They are only enabled in game modes that are both on Summoner’s Rift and that have role picking enabled. The quests themselves focus on aspects of gameplay that each role needs to do to succeed.

These quests function similarly to how support items’ gold earning requirement did in the past, but do not replace that requirement for Support Players. It is a task you need to complete in order to gain a helpful buff, but each buff and quest is unique to its role. Swapping roles (not pick order) with your allies in the lobby will allow you to take over that lane’s role as well as the lane’s quest. You cannot change your role quest mid-game.

How Do They Work in General?

Every lane will have a task or tasks that they need to complete; they work on a point-based system with different ways to get points per role. The ways you get points also can vary, but some lanes share some ways to earn, since they share common areas in their gameplans. You can track your point progress by looking next to your item bar.

You can tell that your ally (or even your enemy) has completed their role quest as long as you have vision on them. Just like the support item quests, there will be an indicator that shows up over their head along with a sound that plays upon completion. Keep an eye out to see how your performance is keeping up!

Below, we will talk about each role, their point requirement, and the different ways points can be earned. You can earn points actively by doing various tasks, or passively as the match continues (in some roles). The amount of points jumps a lot between roles, but the requirements and ways to get them are more limited in many of the lower-cost rewards. Point breakdowns are below in bullet format for easy reading.

Top Lane: 1200 Points

Earning Points:

Top lane’s role quest heavily rewards playing a splitpushing, yet supportive playstyle. By pushing your lane, and helping out your jungler you’ll be on a fast track to 1200. The high-reward milestones happen a lot less often, but you should not ignore them!

  • Destroying a turret: 50 points/turret.
  • Pushing turrets for plating: 40 points/turret in Top, 20 points/turret elsewhere.
  • Helping kill epic monsters: 30 points each.

Other options that help you stack points a bit slower include taking down your opponents (same rewards for Top Laner and other roles), farming minions, and even just continuing to stay in the game.

  • Assist or Kill on Enemy: 15 points each.
  • Minion kills: 2 points/minion in Top, 1 point/minion elsewhere.
  • Passively, starting at 1:05 in-game time: 8 points every 5 seconds in Top, reduced to 1 every 3 in other lanes.

Rewards:

Once you hit 1200 points, you will gain an extra summoner spell in the role quest slot! Unleashed Teleport will be available once every 7 minutes to you if you did not take it as one of your summoner spells at the start of the game. If you picked it during champion select, your teleport (on D or F, usually) will give you a shield for 30 seconds equal to 30% of your maximum health. You will also get 600 experience immediately , 12.5% experience boost on all sources going forward, and be able to reach up to level 20 instead of the standard level 18 cap.

Jungle: 35 Points

Jungle’s quest is very simple: complete your starting item pet’s evolution quest by killing jungle monsters. Gustwalker Hatchling, Mosstomper Seedling, and Scorchclaw Pup all require you to feed them 35 treats to get the final version of Smite. Your role quest requires the same! Just keep farming and you’ll be racking up gold in no time.

Earning Points:

  • Feed treats to your jungle pet: 1 point/treat.

Rewards:

Your Smite will upgrade at the halfway and endpoint of the role quest. Once completed, you’ll also get extra gold and experience (10 each) from all jungle camps moving ahead. Your movement speed will also increase by a solid 8% in the jungle and river, reduced for 4% when you’re in combat. Go get those ganks!

Mid Lane: 1350 Points

Earning Points:

Mid lane’s quest also surprisingly encourages players to focus on pushing turrets and helping kill Epic Monsters but gives even bigger rewards for champion takedowns than Top lane does. Farming minions and fighting your opponents will be key to hitting this massive point requirement.

The big earners for midlane are similar to Top, with a few adjustments to better fit how often fights break out in Mid.

  • Destroy Turrets: 50 points/turret in Mid, 25 points/turret elsewhere.
  • Destroy Turret Plating: 40 points/plate in Mid, 20 points/plate elsewhere.
  • Assist with or Kill Epic Monsters: 30 points each.
  • Takedown enemies: 25 points each.

Mid lane also has a few more opportunities to slowly or even passively build up points as they play. Farming minions will be a big source, but there are some more incentives to keep playing your lane instead of roaming or ganking.

  • Minion kills: 2 points/minion in Mid, 1 point/minion elsewhere. Gold and experience are reduced by ¼ if you’re outside of Mid Lane until level 3.
  • Passively, starting at 1:05 in-game time: 8 points every 5 seconds in Mid, reduced to 1 every 3 in other lanes.
  • Passively, through dealing damage: Melee Champion: 3% of damage dealt to champions will turn into points. Ranged Champion: 1.5% of damage dealt to champions will turn into points.

Rewards:

Your boots will be upgraded (for free) to the special third tier, which was locked behind the Feats of Strength last season. No other lane is able to obtain them this year. Your recall will be empowered, but the bonus effect is locked to a 300 second cooldown, reduced by a minute for every takedown you get. That charge will not get removed if you have empowered recall from an Epic Monster buff.

Bot Lane: 1350 Points

Earning Points:

ADCs are incentivized to farm minions and push turrets above all else. While the goals listed in their quest are similar to the other lanes, you get a lot more points for your farming. Putting in practice to keep your CS lead might help more than just getting you some early boots.

Your high earning quests include:

  • Taking down a turret: 50 points/turret in Bot, 25 points/turret elsewhere.
  • Destroying Turret Plating: 40 points/plate in Bot, 20 points/plate elsewhere.
  • Assist with Epic Monsters: 30 points each.

Options that will be lower in immediate reward but stack faster are:

  • Champion Takedown: 15 points each.
  • Minion Kills: 3 points/minion in Bot, 1.5 points/minion elsewhere. The highest reward per minion in the game!
  • Passively, starting at 1:05 in-game time: 8 points every 5 seconds in Bot, reduced to 1 every 3 in other lanes.

Rewards:

Luckily for Bot Lane, some of the best rewards for finishing off their role quests. On completion, you’ll get 300 gold instantly, gain two bonus gold per future minion kill, an extra 50 gold per Champion takedowns, and most importantly gain an extra item slot. If you have boots, they’ll automatically be moved there.

Support: 800 points

Earning Points:

Support’s role quest is just about what most players would expect; it banks on the completion of their Support Item quest (World Atlas -> Runic Compass -> Final Item form). The amount of gold you earn through its passive is a direct display of your point earnings.

Use charges of your World Atlas and/or Runic Compass:

By dealing damage to enemy champions:

  • World Atlas: Melee: 22 points/charge, Ranged: 20 points/charge.
  • Runic Compass: Melee: 24/charge, Ranged: 22 points/charge.

By killing minions:

  • World Atlas: 15 points/charge.
  • Runic Compass: 20 points/charge

And by your item's passive gold generation

  • World Atlas: 3 points/10 seconds
  • Runic Compass: 5 points/10 seconds

Rewards:

In addition to the free third-tier support item upgrade (Zaz’Zak’s Realmspike, Dream Maker, Solstice Sleigh, Bloodsong, Celestial Opposition), you will gain an item slot outside of your regular inventory that’s only for Control (“Pink”) Wards. They also will be buyable for slightly over ½ price, now only needing 40 gold each. These upgrades give supports a lot of help with their Quality of Life needs and allow them to consistently keep their vision scores high.

Wrapping Up

Role Quests are a more visible and engaging way that Riot has decided to show players what they need to focus on, fundamentally. While the goals within everyone’s role quest have almost always been the same, adding these incentives to complete the “basic” functions of each lane turn out to be a great help for all players. New players get some guidance on how to play (without needing to find tutorials), and experts at the game get even more new buffs to play around with.
