Challenging or defeating NPC bosses is by no means a new feature in Fortnite. However, to keep things fresh and fit in with the Greek mythology theme, the bosses that have been added to the game this season are based on the mythological figures Zeus, Ares, Hades, and Cerberus. Each of these bosses can be summoned or “challenged” in each of their respective locations. This article is going to give a rundown on where each boss can be summoned, how to challenge them, and what each boss drops when they are defeated.
Where Can You Challenge the Gods?
There are four new locations that have been added to Fortnite this season where you can challenge the gods. Each of these locations has its own specific boss to challenge, so remember these for later when you are looking for a certain gun or medallion and you want to drop there right away. The locations are Mount Olympus (Zeus), Brawler’s Battleground (Ares), Grim Gate (Cerberus), and The Underworld. Some of these locations are more popular than others for one reason or another, so make sure you pay attention to the path of the Battle Bus before you make your decision; if a location is too far or close, it may make a difference in how many people drop there!
What Does Each God Drop?
Depending on the god you choose to challenge, each fight and each reward you receive will differ. All four gods have a similar “waves of enemies” style of battle that you need to complete before they drop their mythic weapon and medallion. However, while you need to defeat all three waves of enemies, including the boss themselves, the encounters all differ slightly from each other to make each battle unique. Each battle progresses after each wave, which is indicated by the bar at the top of the screen once each challenge.
Zeus
When fighting Zeus, you will immediately have to fight him right off the bat. Summoning him will cause him to spawn, immediately attacking the player. Defeating his first wave will cause him to kneel, spawning a force field around him and making him immune to damage. During this, four enemies will start spawning; defeating all these enemies will cause Zeus to stand up, dropping the force field and granting him full health again. Defeating Zeus this last time will cause him to drop the Aspect of Speed Medallion, which improves sprint speed and jump height when sprinting, as well as Zeus’ Huntress DMR.
Ares
Ares’ fight is pretty standard when it comes to defeating waves of enemies. When challenged, three minion enemies will spawn. After defeating the initial three enemies, three more will spawn; however, during this second wave, defeating one minion will spawn one more, for a total of four minions to defeat during this wave. Finally, the third wave will be Ares himself, who will spawn an additional two minions until he is beaten. Defeating Ares will cause him to drop the Aspect of Combat Medallion, giving the players a small damage buff on ranged weapons as well as Ares’ Warforged Assault Rifle.
Cerberus
While he is not technically a god, the Cerberus fight is by no means an easy one. During the first two phases of the fight, multiple Shade Wolves will spawn in packs, attacking the player. In both phases, three wolves need to be defeated in order to move on. In the final phase, Cerberus himself will spawn. He has the same Underworld Dash ability that players are granted when they are in the waters of Grim Gate and the underworld, allowing him to teleport after jumping. When combined with his spinning attack that can destroy structures and knock the player back, he is a dangerous encounter. Defeating Cerberus will cause him to drop the Aspect of Agility Medallion, which grants players three regenerating permanent uses of the Underworld Dash, along with Cerberus’ Gatekeeper Shotgun.
Hades
The fourth and final god that you can challenge in Fortnite is none other than Hades. Hades has a very similar battle to Ares; in the first and second rounds, he summons minions to fight for him while he is invulnerable on his throne. Defeating three minions in round one and four in round two (note that in round two he can buff a minion with damage reduction and a shield) will progress players to the final battle with Hades himself. Hades himself has a siphon attack that will damage players while healing himself, as well as the Chains of Hades weapon, which he can use to pull players close to attack them. Defeating Hades causes him to drop the Aspect of Siphon Medallion; doing exactly as the name implies gives players a shield and health siphon on elimination, as well as Hades’ Harbinger SMG.
How Do You Challenge the Gods?
Each god can be challenged in the same way at each location. Look for a small statue in each area depicting the god of that location. Walking up to the statue will prompt an option to “Challenge... " with each option being different depending on which location you are at. Once you decide the time is right, you can go ahead and select this option, and you will start the challenge! Make sure there are no other players around that can pick you off when you are focused on completing the challenge.
Conclusion
Challenging the gods in Fortnite is a fun and thematical spin on the classic boss mechanic that has been in the game for quite some time now. This time around, the medallions and weapons that each god drops are very strong, so a lot of players are prioritizing these encounters. Make sure you keep an eye out when you are in these locations and give these challenges a shot!
