In this article, we will review League of Legends’ new in-game currency Mythic Essence, what it is, how it works, and what changes have been made to switch to this system! Is it a good thing for the average player, or is it just something fancy and new to spice up the game and try and convince you to spend more money? We’ll dive into all of this and more, starting off with what is Mythic Essence.

What is Mythic Essence

Mythic Essence is the new currency available in the League of Legends client that allows the owner to unlock Prestige, Hextech, and Mythic skin exclusives as they rotate in availability in the Mythic Shop. Mythic Essence replaced two previous in-game currencies: Gemstones and Prestige Points. Gemstones were used to purchase Mythic skins, while Prestige Points were used to grab event skins or converted into Gemstones to purchase from the other collection.

This new system gives players an opportunity to get their favorite elite skins at a later date than the event with their release. Before, players needed to grind extensively and likely commit money for a chance at collecting enough tokens to unlock the skin they desire. That system is no longer!

Instead, Riot has implemented a new system with this currency where these incredible skins are rotated in and out of availability every quarter, or every month depending on the skin’s status as Prestige or Mythic! Now that we understand what Mythic Essence is, and what changes have occurred with this new in-game currency, how do players actually get their hands on this valuable tender?

How To Get Mythic Essence

1. Via Event Passes

This is still the simple answer, which is spending your money to get it! While you cannot exactly just buy Mythic Essence, you can still buy Event Passes which will drop Mythic Essence when completing certain checkpoints along the Missions Milestones.

Since the majority of these skins will be available for 125 Mythic Essence, your goal should be to grind with an Event Pass to get that desired 2200 tokens that can be converted to the 125 Mythic Essence needed. Obviously, spending money is not an option for a lot of players, and why bother reading how to get Mythic Essence if you are willing to just spend the money to get it?

2. Get It For Free Through Various Rewards

Thankfully, there are ways of getting Mythic Essence for free in League of Legends. First and foremost, with the transition to this new currency, all Gemstones an account had were converted to 10 Mythic Essence each, so if you had some Gemstones laying around on your account, they now will be Mythic Essence!

Secondly, when you continue to play the game and progress through the never-ending account leveling system, you will be rewarded with 10 Mythic Essence for every 50 levels once you have surpassed level 150. Of course, this is not that effective and even worth considering as a potential ‘strategy’ to accumulate Mythic Essence because 50 levels requires a big time commitment.

However, if you notice you are close to a 50 level increment, then it’s certainly worth grinding games to achieve that extra 10 Mythic Essence! Aside from grinding 50 levels at a time (which would take upwards of 500 levels to get a single skin from rotation), free to play players are still in luck because the most effective way is exactly how they have previously gotten Gemstones! This is through Hextech Chests!

3. From Hextech Chests, If You’re Lucky

For those that don’t know, Hextech Chests are in-game items awarded to players that performed well on a Champion via the Champion Mastery System. In this system, players are scored based on several factors that are outlined in this guide. Once the player unlocks a Hextech Chest for that Champion, they cannot unlock another one for that Champion until the new season, and instead would only be able to unlock one based on pre-made teammates performances on their Champions. It’s a bit confusing to summarize, but what’s important is that whenever a Hextech Chest is opened, there is about a 1/25 chance of receiving 10 Mythic Essence! This is the best way to unlock such valuable items for free, so it’s best to play a diverse range of Champions and follow that guide to find strategies that work best for you to get high ranks to unlock them, and play with friends often to get as many key fragments as possible to open them!

4. From Masterwork Chests

On top of this, there is also about a 1/25 chance of 5 Mythic Essence dropping from a Masterwork Chest. Masterwork Chests are available for purchase as they have been previously, but now with the Showcase and Masterwork Milestones for Masterwork Chests, there are also bonus features available to unlock even more Mythic Essence based on the number of Masterwork Chests opened!

5. Buy it with Blue Essence in the Essence Emporium

The final method for accessing Mythic Essence at a great price is during the Essence Emporiums where up to 30 Mythic Essence will be purchasable with Blue Essence! This is by far the best option because the easiest resource in the game to get is Blue Essence! So, whenever the Essence Emporium is available, it will always be worth grabbing the easy 30 Mythic Essence that should account for roughly ¼ of one of these pristine skins!

Overall, it’s obviously going to be the easiest to pay for the features that will make Mythic Essence easier to gather, but ultimately what it comes down to is playing often, and always playing to win and get a good score with Champions you have not already unlocked Hextech Chests for. From there, team up with some friends to make sure you are unlocking the Key Fragments needed to open those chests, and you’ll see the Mythic Essence piling up in no time!
