Games with online matchmaking like VALORANT are home to millions of people who spend time, money, and passion on something that brings them joy. The stress of being bullied and insulted over a game forces players to look for solutions to help increase their privacy so that they can enjoy VALORANT and rank up with ease.
It doesn't matter if you're a content creator or just a regular player; worrying about a random player badgering you for an off game you had is unpleasant and bothersome. Maybe you're a streamer and want to play the game without your opponents stream sniping.
In this guide, we discuss strategies for enhancing your in-game privacy and permanently eliminating agitators.
Why Players Want to Hide Their Names
Players may want to hide their names for multiple reasons. VALORANT is a competitive 5v5 shooter, which means that ranked games can get heated over any small thing, as you know the mentality of another player.
If you are a player who has had bad games or is a bit vocal in the game and your name is visible, it can make you a target for harassment or verbal abuse.
Many streamers hide their identity to try to stop viewers or opponents from stream sniping, which ruins the game for the whole lobby, especially the streamer and their fans. Likewise, pro players or high-ranking players may want to keep their identity hidden to play without being recognized or under pressure to perform.
Another reason for players to hide their name is to have a fresh ranked experience without the expectations of their name or skill.
Can You Completely Hide Your Name in VALORANT?
The short answer is no, you cannot fully hide your name from everyone in VALORANT. Riot Games requires you to have some sort of visibility for fairness, reporting, and moderation purposes. This helps ensure competitive integrity and accountability within the community.
Having said that, streamer mode is almost always effective enough to protect your identity, along with changing your Riot ID.
What Is Streamer Mode?
Streamer Mode is an officially supported method to hide your identity and protect your privacy. You do not need to be a streamer to use this mode. This mode protects players from harassment, abuse, etc. by masking the Riot ID during agent select and the game.
When Streamer Mode is enabled, a placeholder name takes the place of your Riot ID throughout the whole game, which includes agent select, the scoreboard, and the kill feed. However, Streamer Mode does not hide your identity from people in your party, friends, or people who know your voice, as they could recognize you from your comms.
How You Can Hide Your Name In VALORANT
The actual process of hiding your name is extremely simple.
The step-by-step process
- Open the Riot Client and launch the game.
- Go to the home screen and press ESC or click on the gear icon and open settings.
- Scroll to the privacy section.
- Turn the top 2 settings to “on” to hide your name on VALORANT.
You now see two options in the privacy section that help in hiding your name in the game.
- Hide My Riot ID from Players Outside My Party
This option makes it so that your ID is hidden from people who are not in your party. In Agent Select, people not in your party view you as Player 1-5, and in-game, your name is the same as your agent.
This means that when you play as Viper, both your teammates and opponents will recognize you as Viper, but on your screen, you will see "Me."
- Use Generic Names for Players Outside My Party
The second option makes it so that everyone outside your party has anonymous names. The Riot IDs of enemy players are hidden and given the agent's name, helping anonymity. This option is used to prevent stream sniping, dodging, and wintrading.
For maximum privacy, turn both these settings on, and if you record your gameplay and want to keep yourself and your team anonymous, then using these settings is perfect.
For Console
These settings are the same for the console VALORANT as well.
- Open VALORANT
- Press the menu button and press settings.
- Scroll down to the privacy section and toggle both these settings to “ON.”
These settings are synced to your Riot ID, so it stays consistent over multiple platforms.
Extra Privacy Settings
Hiding your name helps in most cases, but it doesn’t hurt to take additional steps to protect yourself.
Altering your Riot ID to a different name can give you a slight layer of anonymity until others recognize you by your voice or gameplay style. One more way to lessen toxic players is to enable auto-reject friend requests. You can enable this setting from the general section and prohibit annoying opponents from trying to add you after a difficult game.
Final Thoughts: Is Hiding Your Name Worth It?
Enabling these privacy settings helps in protecting players from toxicity and harassment. While Streamer Mode does not offer perfect anonymity, it is adequate for the majority of the player base.
Using different IDs for streaming and personal gaming, along with keeping your Riot ID private, can significantly lower the likelihood of being recognized.
