Professional Fortnite player DIG Acorn goes over some of the best strategies and tips to help players improve their aim in Fortnite.
One of the most important aspects of success in any shooter is good aim, and while Fortnite is such a unique game when it comes to gameplay and overall design, this still holds true. Dignitas' own Abdullah "Acorn" Akhras gives us a little insight on aim in Fortnite and how to improve your aim so you can confidently take those fights in your next match.
Improving your aim can feel like a large task at times, especially if you are in a rut or have been experiencing a long stretch of rough games. Fortnite in particular is such a unique game as far as design goes, especially with the building mechanics thrown into the mix. However, the best thing players can do right off the bat to improve their aim in Fortnite is quite simple: just play! A lot of players might want to go through all these custom maps and drills on improving their aim, but in order to improve your aim in real scenarios, it is playing! It’s okay to mess up if it contributes to the learning process.
Acorn: I think with aiming in Fortnite it just comes down to playing the game. You just have to play a lot. Aim is just practice. The more time put in, the better your aim will get. You just have to play Fortnite as much as you can.
So, what about aim trainers? Are they helpful in improving your aim in Fortnite? Well, yes and no. While aim trainers can be very helpful for improving overall aim fundamentals for shooters, in Fortnite the best thing you can do to improve at a faster pace is to just improve within the game itself. Aim trainers can definitely be useful in some cases, but playing Fortnite simply is the best way to get better at Fortnite.
Acorn: I think just actually playing the game itself is the best way to get better. I think other things like aim trainers are good but for different reasons. Like if you want to improve your mouse control and other skills like that, then sure you can use those different programs, but I think overall the best thing is just playing Fortnite.
So, what about custom maps within Fortnite? Are they a better option than other separate aim trainer programs? Absolutely! Fortnite is great because you can download and play custom maps to help with certain skills within the game itself. So, what you are practicing can directly be applied to actual matches. Just don’t replace playing and practicing real matches of Fortnite with only playing custom maps; make sure to have a good balance of both.
Acorn: A mix of everything is good to be honest. Scrims are good because it improves your AR aim the most since people shoot their AR the most in scrim games and it’s the most realistic. Creative is good for shotgun aim. You always have to mix it up because Fortnite is not just one type of aiming, it’s a bunch of things. Plus, you have building in the mix. You are always moving your mouse so much, you have to practice everything. I think playing everything is good.
The next thing that players might be wondering is what they should look out for in-game when they are trying to improve their aim. What should they be mindful of? It can be difficult to keep track of things when things get hectic, especially if someone is whiffing a lot of their shots or just seems to be playing poorly. It can be incredibly frustrating, especially if you do not know what to look for. The best thing you can do in this situation is to remain calm. If you are getting frustrated, panicking, or have a bad mentality, it will only make you play worse. Remaining calm will always improve your skills, especially aim.
Acorn: I think a lot of Fortnite to be honest is mental. In the game itself while you are playing, even if you are whiffing it’s always good to stay calm and not panic. I think to have the best aim; you have to be in a calm state of mind. You can’t just panic. You’re just going to miss every shot.
If you couldn’t already tell, playing the game as much as possible is the best thing you can do to improve. Acorn specifically mentions that for him, keeping it consistent and getting things down to a routine is how he keeps things sharp. Playing the game as much as you can without burning yourself out is what he says helps him stay on top of things the most.
Acorn: Usually for me, when I take a break, I’ll come back, and I’ll be off for like a good day until I get back in my space and my zone. I think it’s really about being consistent and playing. Not as much as you possibly can but, like daily. Keep it consistent. When you take breaks, it’s harder to see improvement.
Finally, one crucial thing to keep in mind is not to overthink or complicate things. As you could probably tell, keeping things simple is one of the best things you can do to improve your aim in Fortnite. Obsessing over every little thing like specific settings, changing your sensitivity constantly, and constantly checking every little detail can ruin your progress. Once you find something you succeed with, just roll with it! It’s okay to make some changes down the road, but don’t shake things up too much all the time. It can hinder your progress.
Acorn: You don’t want to complicate it too much. I know people will get too in-depth and start thinking they need to change things. I think once you find something you’re comfortable with and you see that you have a good day at it, from that point on you know that it’s not the peripherals. You know you can be good if you just put the time in. I think switching peripherals a lot is where people have their downfall. I had a period where I used to switch a lot of stuff, and I felt like I was not that good. Now I don’t even care what I use, because I know it’s me, it’s not what I use.
