How to Orbwalk in League of Legends

Informative guide to help you kite your opponents!

Orbwalking, in my opinion, is the most satisfying thing you can do in League of Legends. Orbwalking is when you perform an auto attack and then move as quickly as possible. While orbwalking is much easier with more attack speed, it is still doable with very little, and it’s worth the effort.

Say you’re farming in lane as a Marksman. You’re concentrating on getting your last hits on minions, and then out of the blue the enemy Jungler comes to your lane. Unfortunately, you’re in the middle of an auto attack, and it takes you a second longer to run away because you’re finishing the auto attack animation, instead of canceling it. That’s right; you can cancel the auto attack animation. You do so by auto attacking, and then as soon as you see your bullet leave your champion, you can click away to where you want to walk to, and you will cancel the rest of the animation to move. It may not seem like a big deal, but those extra fractions of seconds that you will save could end up saving your life.

Canceling auto attacks is very important in lane, because your own auto attacks can be used against you by the enemy laner. If the enemy laner knows you’re about to walk up and auto attack a minion for the last hit, they can walk up to you at the same time and auto attack you or use an ability to get free damage that you can’t return because you were auto attacking.

Eventually, when you get enough attack speed, you will be able to orbwalk efficiently. I say “efficiently,” because if you don’t have enough attack speed, you won’t be able to cancel your auto attacks fast enough to “kite” an enemy opponent. Kiting an enemy opponent simply means you’re just dragging them along (and they’re not able to touch you) like a kite.

There are a few ways to orbwalk. One option is to right click your target, and then right click where you want to move right afterwards. A second option is to hit the “a” button on your keyboard, and then right click to where you want to move. Both option’s have their pros and cons. For the first option, you have to be extremely precise with your right clicks, because if you misclick, and don’t click on your target, but instead the space next to it, you will walk towards your target which will usually lead to your death. The second option remedies the problem of misclicking, but the “a” button forces you to attack the closest thing next to you; that means if you’re trying to attack an enemy behind another, you won’t be able to, but if your target is right in front of you, using the “a” button is arguably the fastest and efficient way to orb walk.

By using the right click, I can choose the low health enemy minion to get the last hit on. If I used "a," I would be hitting the melee minion right in front of me.

In the picture above, using "a" (you can tell by the red pointer instead of the green) I made Quinn walk to the left. However, since there was a target in my 525 range while I was using "a" to walk to the left, Quinn stops and attacks the closest target to her, which in this case is the ranged minion right in front of her.

If you’re having trouble misclicking, then try using the “a” button. Be wary of getting too accustomed to the “a” button, because there will be times where you need to be targeting a different enemy than the one right in front of you. Practice your right clicks! It’s easy to make a custom match and just practice orbwalking on the minions that spawn. If you’re misclicking too much and walking towards the enemy team, try the “s” button. The “s” button will automatically stop any action your champion is doing. So if you right click right next to your target, and start walking towards it, you can quickly press “s” to save yourself before repositioning and trying again.

There's a nice hidden bonus to using the "a" button, it will show you your attack range! This will help you get used to different champion ranges, as well as learn how to position yourself in range for your auto attacks, and out of range for your opponents.

Proper usage of your right clicks, “a” button, and “s” button will help you kite any enemy and make for some flashy plays! All it takes is some practice to get down the exact timing; it will change with the amount of attack speed you have, so get some custom & normal games under your belt before you feel comfortable enough to start performing it in ranked. Orbwalking is an essential tool for any Marksman, especially those without their own movement abilities. After mastering it, you will see not only your CS scores going up, but your death tolls going down!
