How to Win in Fortnite Without Being a Building Expert

While building is a core part of Fortnite, it’s not everything. You can still win in Fortnite without being a building expert—here is how.

The skill ceiling in Fortnite has gotten pretty high, especially mechanics-wise. You see players with insane building skills able to not only build fast but be consistent with it. They read all your moves and outbuild you easily. If you have played Ranked, you know what I am talking about.

It makes you think that to win and rank up, you also need these building skills. And, to a certain degree, you do. However, you don’t need to be a cracked builder to win matches in Fortnite. Building is just one aspect of what makes a good player. There are things like game sense and positioning that really set a good player apart from a great one. It’s why you often see creative warriors struggle in ranked matches.

In short, you don’t need cracked mechanics to win in Fortnite. If building is not your strength, you can use other aspects to cover that weakness, and this article is all about that.

Don’t Play on Auto Pilot

Fortnite is one of those games where players tend to get stuck in a loop of predictive habits. They go for the same retakes, jump shots, and peeks. It’s a problem a lot of players face. And players with good building skills understand that. That’s why they are so good at trapping players and getting easy shots off.

Try to play more mindfully, take the information you have, and use that to your advantage. If the player is being super aggressive instead of matching that aggressiveness, shift to a more passive playstyle.

For example, if a player keeps pressuring you when you are in a box, instead of trying to find opportunities to get a shot at him, which is what most players do, try to create more space for yourself. Instead of sitting in the same two boxes, extend to more boxes. It will give you room to play and more opportunities to punish the opponent.

More often than not, aggressive players get more aggressive if you play passively. This makes them make mistakes that you can punish them for.

In short, instead of trying to match his mechanics, just try to be smarter with your plays. A lot of players in ranked are mostly on autopilot.

Perfect Your Box Fighting

You don’t need fancy retakes or flashy build moves to win fights. Instead, work on your boxfighting because every duel mostly ends with one player in a box. The great thing about boxfighting is that it’s not super mechanical.

All you need to learn is how to create and move through boxes, find opportunities to take shots, and punish if the enemy gets too aggressive. Just practice getting comfortable with fighting in a box, which includes learning how to quickly get out from a box, learning how to edit the cones or ramps inside your box, and learning how to go for quick peek shots. There are great maps in Fortnite Creative that can help you to improve.

When an enemy sees a player boxed up, they often get overconfident and start playing aggressively. While that can be intimidating to play against, all you need is a bit of patience, and you will see an opening.

The last thing you want to do is panic when the enemy pressures you.

Practice Other Mechanics

If building isn’t your strong suit, then spend time perfecting your other mechanics. This includes your aim, movement, and editing. Back in the days when aim assists were strong, you’d see controller players destroy mechanically skilled players, just by outaiming them.

Now, you obviously can’t get that type of aim because it was broken back then, but if you can train your aim and be consistent, you will find yourself winning matches just by outaiming the opponent. This same concept applies to movement.

Use Mobility and Other Utilities to Your Advantage

A player who is confident in their building skill will often just rely on that and expect other players to do the same. But if you use a utility such as shockwaves and explosives, it can really throw them off.

For instance, shockwaves are great for getting up to height quickly. You also break builds as you are launched. I have gotten so many free kills just by timing the shockwave right.

Not only do you break the builds the enemy standing on, you also get a good opportunity to get a shot on him as they try to save themselves from falling.

Of course, they are also handy for creating distance between you and your enemy, which can be a viable option if you are good at fighting long range. Similarly, explosives can be used to break buildings, create openings, and distract the enemy.

Overall, if building isn’t your strong suit, use the utility Fortnite gives you to close that skill gap.

Don’t Play on Their Field

If an enemy starts a build battle with you, don’t fall for it. Instead, fall back and play to your strengths. Force the enemy to play by your rules, and more often than not, they will. For example, instead of build-fighting an enemy, fall back and force them to come down to fight you. This makes them play on your field and where you are strong.

This is why I emphasized boxfighting earlier; it’s the best counter to super mechanical players.

Maintain Distance

This is another alternative strategy, but it’s not for everyone. Building skills doesn’t really matter if you are fighting at long range; at most, all they can do is build cover for themselves. So, if you are good at long-range duels, that is good with an AR or a sniper, then play to that strength.

Maintain distance and try to punish the enemy if they try to close the distance. Obviously, this doesn’t apply in all situations, but if you can get the enemy weak just from long range, the close-up battle will be in your favor.

Conclusion

Being good at building makes you a good player, but it’s not necessary. There are a lot of great pros that aren’t that good at building but still manage to place high in tournaments and win money. It’s because they play to their strengths and play smart to cover their weakness. If you can improve your building, then that’s great, but also train other aspects of your gameplay, especially game sense. If you can play smarter than your opponent, then mechanics won’t really matter.
