Interview with DIG Pterodactylsftw on reaching rank 77 in Overwatch

We had a chat with Pterodactylsftw, one of the top female Overwatch players.

Being one of the top female Overwatch players, we had the chance to interview Pterodactylsftw about Competitive Play in Overwatch. As a Roadhog and Junkrat main we also asked her what makes these heroes so special to her.

Sheila when she became a Team Dignitas streamer in 2014

Hello Sheila, you are one of the top female Overwatch players in Competitive Play. Can you tell us why you started playing Overwatch?

Pterodactylsftw: I started playing Overwatch because a group of my friends told me to try it. I've been playing pretty much strictly CS so it took me a bit of convincing to get me to try a new game but I'm glad I did.

Since you already played Roadhog for 15 hours and Junkrat for 8 hours, what do you like most about these heroes and why do you play them in Competitive Play?

Pterodactylsftw: Roadhog and Junkrat were just super cute characters and I liked their lore and the more I played them for fun the better I got. Turns out those two are heroes that give you a lot of 1v1 abilities and you can kind of make plays on your own without always having to rely on your team or a healer. I like that about them.

Can you tell us some crucial tips when playing Roadhog and Junkrat that beginners probably don't know?

Pterodactylsftw: Aw I really don't know. I'm honestly not the best at them, they're just what I'm strongest with. I even have a lot to learn.

Do you have any tips which heroes, besides Roadhog and Junkrat, are good if you want to climb the ladder?

Pterodactylsftw: Genji is another hero that is super strong and can make some impactful plays but he takes a lot of skill to use.

Do you have any general tips to be successful in Competitive Play?

Pterodactylsftw: Work with your team. It's a team game. Not everyone is trying to be a jerk when they tell you what heroes to play. Sometimes certain compositions are better. Try to be as cooperative as you can and you'll probably have a good time.

Your highest rank in Overwatch is rank 77, that makes you one of the top 1% in the game. Have you noticed a skillgap between the rank you started with and rank 70+?

Pterodactylsftw: Unfortunately the skillgap doesn't matter. As ranked is right now you can be a level 70 and playing with level 50s. So it's hard to say.

Your winrate is nearly 70%. Do you play solo queue in Overwatch or with friends to win most of your matches?

Pterodactylsftw: Definitely with my friends. Mostly because it's more fun and definitely easier when you work together. I've solo'ed tho, it's just not a good time. Most pros and high level players all find a nice duo or group of 3 to rank with.

Also something I get ALL TOO OFTEN is that I'm "carried" because I play with people "better" than me. Although I may not be the best player I know I'm not the worst. And sure I may play poorly some games but sometimes I play great in others and I know I deserve the rank I am at. I make plays I can honestly say win games and I do my part to contribute to the win. Overwatch again is a team game. It's very hard to win a game when even one person isn't doing their part.

Do you like the fact that there is a dynamic queue in Overwatch or do you want to see solo/duo ranked and team ranked?

Pterodactylsftw: I think Team ranked would be nice but solo and duo I dont see necessary.

In other games you often have a long queue time at a high level. What is the queue time like at such a high rank?

Pterodactylsftw: Queue times are usually pretty short unless you're up at 5 AM and playing when everyone is asleep.

Another problem that many games had have, is that the balance between the two teams gets less and less with higher ranks. Do you feel like the teams are still balanced at higher ranks?

Pterodactylsftw: Teams aren't really that balanced at all. The level differences are usually ridiculous.

Also in other games you often see trolls and leavers at the highest ranks. Do you feel like you often get trolled in Competitive Play?

Pterodactylsftw: TROLLS IN OVERWATCH ARE THE WORST AND THEY ARE EVERYWHERE. Sometimes you don't even have to say anything to them... or even if you just ask nicely "Would you mind playing mercy?" They choose TORBJORN ON KING OF THE HILL. Sigh...

Do you have a favorite game mode and if so which and why?

Pterodactylsftw: I'm just super competitive and like to play ranked and try to improve and get better.

In Competitive Play you can earn competitive points to buy a golden gun for a hero. Which gun do you want to buy first?

Pterodactylsftw: Either of the weapons for Junkrat or Roadhog of course.

Last question before we wrap up the interview. What do you think Overwatch needs for the future? More heroes, more maps, both?

Pterodactylsftw: The competitive scoring and ranks need work and I think we could always use more heroes and maps but those will come in time.

Any shoutouts?

Pterodactylsftw: Wanna shoutout to Dig & their sponsors for being the loveliest org to be a part of and MOST of my viewers. MOST of you are amazing and some of you are butts.
