Interview with KiWiKiD: "I remember coming into this being the newest person"

We catch up with Alan "KiWiKiD" Nguyen to talk about the team and his status as Team Dignitas' own personal Veteran.

We recently caught up with Alan "KiWiKiD" Nguyen to talk to him about his status as longest standing veteran within the scene, how he feels about the current Meta, and more!

Welcome back to the Team Dignitas house with KiWiKiD. How's it going man?

KiWiKiD: Hey I'm doing good, how you been?

Pretty good, but you guys have been really busy prepping for relegations up against TDK first, how have those been?

KiWiKiD: We've been doing pretty well I'd say, I smashed my finger the other day so that kinda sucked, but other than that it's been pretty good.

It's a different type of practice too, as you have been doing a lot more series practicing like best of 5s. It's more of an endurance training but what are the big differences for you when it comes to scrimming for relegations?

KiWiKiD: There's really not much of a difference, there was a lot more time so we had more time to think about things against TDK or anybody else that we're playing. Since we don't have to do it from a weekend to weekend basis, in a way it's less stressful.

You are the last LCS player that's been with the original LCS team. What's it like being the veteran?

KiWiKiD: It's kind of weird because I remember coming into this being the newest person, I remember being a rookie myself. I guess I just didn't think it would be this fast to become a veteran. It makes sense because relatively LCS is still pretty new, because this is barely the 4th year. It kind of makes sense now, but it happened so fast.

You have become the face of Team Dignitas that must feel weird?

KiWiKiD: Yeah it's pretty weird.

Every time you hover over Alistar in champ select because of the 5 man knockup last relegation. I see you in champ select and you hover it or pick it and the casters and analysts go bonkers about how much of an Alistar player you are. They build it up to a huge deal, is it actually as big of a deal for you? Do you think he's your signature champion or was it just because of that one move you made?

KiWiKiD: I think it's just because of that one move I made, I don't really consider anybody a signature champion. I kind of just play what's best for the team, I don't really even have a favourite, I'd say.

When there are nerfs and buffs in each patch, it not only affects who is strong or immediately weak but it also affects other champions who were not necessarily buffed or nerfed but because their counters or the champions they were good against are changed, they're in or out of the meta. Do you think there were any champions subtly affected like that in this patch?

KiWiKiD: I guess Ekko is probably the most prominant right now, he just got really slight buffs I'd say. But now everybody seems to be wanting to play him a lot. Maybe he was just good before but the buffs just kind of brought him into light and people just started trying him, that could just be it.

Looking back on all the past seasons you've played. How would you compare the season you're currently in to the past ones you've played in. Especially all these new champions, items and strategies?

KiWiKiD: I really like it, because before there were only 3 supports that were always up top. Now I feel like there's probably 7 things you can play almost at all times that's actually pretty big for a competitive pool. I remember before it was like Leona, Thresh and Janna, that was one of the metas, sometimes Annie. It keeps changing and that's just one example. I really like support at least, I think every role has a lot of things to play now, that's good.

Looking at the team specifically, how would you describe the team's weaknesses and strengths this split.

KiWiKiD: Our under-performance on stage is probably our biggest weakness, and maybe not listening to me as much. But strengths, I'd say we've done a really good job learning about a lot of things like wave control, when to push and when to back. Resetting in general is really important so I think we've taken a big stride in that regard.

I remember early on, you were saying that you and Kirei are duo shot callers, would you say now you are the more dominant voice?

KiWiKiD: Yeah I would probably say that.

What do you think moving into the next split that best of 3s might do. You guys are practicing a lot for best of 5s but the next split is going to be best of 3s. What are your opinions on best of 3s?

KiWiKiD: It's going to be really nice because it helps you prepare for the international stage if you ever get there. I feel like this game in general should be best of 3s. Although best of 1s are okay but best of 3s makes sense because both sides do have their advantages and disadvantages. It's not like Soccer or Basketball where it doesn't matter what side you're on but in a game like this it does matter so more games on either side is important, so it's good.

Over your long career what would you describe as one of the most important things you've learned?

KiWiKiD: One of the most important things is probably budgeting, it's really important in life. I'd never really done that as much until I moved out here. I've learned a lot just being out here about myself and it's been a really good experience.

Last question, would you rather fight 100 Teemo sized Alistars, or 1 Alistar sized Teemo?

KiWiKiD: Probably 100 Teemo-Sized Alistars, I don't think I want to meet an Alistar sized Teemo. Hopefully the little Alistars wouldn't be able to knock me up because I'm too big.

Any shoutouts?

KiWiKiD: Shoutout to all my fans, friends and family. Thanks for supporting me all the time, all our sponsors. Thanks a lot.
