After taking out Spain in the quarterfinals, and fighting a tough battle with his Finnish teammates against Russia, dignitas Novalas caught up with our Overwatch player LiNkzr to ask him his thought and opinion on the newest addition to the Overwatch hero roster, Sombra. We've asked him about the current state of the character, what her playstyle is going to be, where she'll fit into the competitive meta and more.
We all saw the cinematic, it was a very cool cinematic. What do you think her (Sombra) backstory is?
LiNkzr: I've been following the Sombra story for a long time, and I don't know how to really condense it into 3 sentences, but so far it seems like Sombra is doing good things in a bad way. Working with the bad guys, helping the bad guys, and then when the situation is right, she's going to do something good. She's making friends, like she did with the Russian Defence Minister? (Volskaya). It seems like she hates corruption, but she doesn't really care how she deals with it.
Tell me, how do you personaly feel about the kit itself after trying it out at Blizzcon?
LiNkzr: So Sombra's kit is kinda weird. You have a flanky style of kit with the invisibility which makes you move faster, and then you have the translocater which is actually insane. You don't place it down, you throw it, and you can throw it over walls, to high ground. You have a lot of mobility in comparison to Tracer, who moves all over the ground, Genji can move however he wants, but Sombra can do different kinds of stuff. More irrational. Lots of movement abilities, invisibility, and then you have the control stuff.
You have a different kind of firing style, when you press right click, you start hijacking guys, it's like 1-2 seconds as you lock onto the opponent, and when you finish the hack it disables the abilities of the character, and it's more of a control kind of deal, so you help to get kills instead of getting them instantly. Her ultimate is like an AOE EMP which has a great purple animation that goes round and round. It drops down the shields, and hacks everyone around it instantly. It turns off Reinhardt shield completely, removes Zarya shields, Zen has 150HP as the shield, so Zenyatta under an EMP has 50hp. It kinda does damage to some people, and is a massive disruption in a team fight. The character has 2 purposes, 2 playstyles you can use.
What role do you think she's going to fulfil in a competitive team environment?
LiNkzr: That's really hard to say right now, but I think at the beginning she's going to be the flanker style. The invisibility and the translocator are the two best abilities you can probably have. The invisibility makes you move faster, you can move from A to B in a matter of seconds. At the beginning I'm seeing her more of a flanker on the attack side, she can be really strong because she can use every flank in the game, and create new ones because of her kit. So at the beginning, flanker, but towards the end when things settle down and the meta starts to develop, I can see her as more of a control type of character, and then more like a flanker. You start the fight, help the team take down a shield, or try to go through a hack, like you get a speed boost and Zarya bubble and you go for a hack, so the enemy Reinhardt shield is down. And then you get a Reinhardt ultimate for free onto the enemy team, and then you do the flanking stuff, moving in fast with the invisibility and translocator.
Do you think she's going to be a character that you're going to personally play a lot?
LiNkzr: Yes! For sure, it's invisibility, I always like those characters, high mobility, close range character with a fast firerate and abilities to outplay opponents is really fun to me, so I will definitely play the character the most.
Lets talk about her kit, specifically is there anything in her kit that you don't like, that you would change?
LiNkzr: Well, it's a strong kit. Every time a new hero comes in, their kit seems overpowered, but right now the only thing that felt a bit weird for me was the hacking system. The kit overall is really strong, and it's stupid maybe to say that the hacking is a weak ability, but it makes you really vulnerable. It's a good thing to have vulnerabilities on a character, but the actual system for hacking feels a bit rigged. You start beaming on someone, and it shows her hand, so it feels odd to have the visual feedback and how it feels, but it's hard for me to say now what changes I would do.
Sombra has been getting a lot of hype, a lot of teasers for months now and she finally got announced at Blizzcon 2016. Do you think that she lived up to the hype?
LiNkzr: I think there was a moment where I was thinking "why isn't Sombra released yet?" you know? But I think the moment that she started hacking the announcement, it felt worth it. The ARG that Blizzard was doing felt kind of weird. But I think she lived up to the hype, definitely a character worth the hype.
