Item Analysis: Zz'Rot Portal in the Top Lane

Zz'Rot portal: An analysis by Exile

Zz'Rot portal is a unique item that was added in patch 4.21 and is a very niche item for toplaners. It is suggested that toplaners who excel at splitpushing should pick this up as a third or fourth item and use it to continue the splitpush while you teleport away, or use it as an item to keep the lane push in your favour if you are a low aoe damage champion. Zz'Rot portal has not had a significant impact on toplane itemization as many champions that would utilize this are not currently in meta.

Best Utilized On

The champions that use it to its maximum potential are champions that haven't seen a high pick rate in soloqueue for most of preseason as well as season 5. The champion who I see will have the most use of this item is a Shen top. This item gives him the 50 armor and magic resist that a dedicated tank needs, as well as the movement speed that a champion with very little available mobility needs when trading with the enemy top laner. The active portion of this item is very interesting for Shen, and he is able to utilize this much better than any other splitpushing toplaner. Because of Shen's teleport ultimate as well as the generic teleport taken on toplanes, he is able to keep the pressure and splitpushing up toplane while he makes an impact on the other side of the map.

Item Build Path

The Zz'Rot portal has a very unique item path, as it uses the Raptor Cloak. The Raptor Cloak is built out of a Rejuvenation Bead and Cloth armor, and costs 1000 gold, which means that there is a 520 gold charge to make the item. Raptor cloak is a very interesting item, as it gives the Portal Runner passive, which gives 30% bonus movespeed that builds up over 2 seconds when near turrets. This passive itself is very awkward, as it is rarely utilized in a lane where it is generally frozen in the middle, but there are situations when it is very useful. The other item that is used in the Zz'Rot portal is a Negatron cloak, which, if playing against a AP top such as Lissandra, Swain or Singed should be built very early on.

The Voidgate

The Voidgate is what spawns the Voidspawns, and is the active of the Zz'Rot Portal. The item description reads "Unique Active: Spawns a Void Gate at target location for 150 seconds. Every 4 seconds the gate creates a volatile Voidspawn that travels down the nearest lane, attacking enemy minions and exploding when attacking structures, but ignoring champions and void targets. 150 second cooldown. Every additional Voidspawn after the third one gains damage equal to 50% of your armor + 50% of your magic resistance." This means that the longer the portal is out, the more rewarded the user will be, as the voidspawns will push much harder as well as hurt the towers more. Because the Voidgate spawns Voidspawns every 4 seconds, there will be more than one per wave, which will really help swing the push in your favour.

The Voidspawn

The Voidspawn are the creature that comes out of the Voidgate every four seconds. The Voidspawn has 20 AD +3 per champion level, and 250 health, which makes it able to sustain a few auto attacks from toplaners, or many from lane minions. After the third Voidspawn, every one get damage equal to 50% of your armor and 50% of your magic resist, which makes this a snowball item, although it is not like the standard Mejai's, instead it scales over time which is more like a Rod of Ages.

Other Champions That Utilize Zz'Rot

Although we previously covered that the best champion that I find Zz'Rot portal to be useful on is Shen, it is useful on many other champions, just maybe not to the extent of its usefulness on Shen. The other champion that we will be looking at is one of my personal favourites, Sion. Sion has a relatively high base movement speed, which allows him to choose the Negatron first if he needs the magic resist unlike some other champions who would value the movement speed from the Raptor Cloak more. Sion makes good use of the armor and magic resist because he generally fills a tank role, and should be more teamfight oriented rather than splitpushing, and the Zz'Rot portal helps him fulfill both roles better than he would be able to before.

Conclusion

Thank you for reading my analysis on the Zz'Rot portal and I hope you use it effectively to splitpush and win games!
