In recent months, we’ve been covering all the utility you have to know to effectively take over the sites of various maps as the terrorists. Through these guides, you were able to learn all it takes to shut down a site and take control. Now, it’s time to look at effective countermeasures you can take as a defender. With these line-ups, you can slow down any assault and deal some preliminary damage to make it even easier to hold down the fort.
As always, there is a line-up for which you have to jump up and throw. To aid you in successfully throwing the smoke at your highest point in the air, you can use a jumpthrow command as detailed in my guide on the ultimate CS:GO settings.
A-Site
As is tradition, we kick off things with the A-Site. Overpass is a tricky map to play as it has very long alleyways leading up to the A-Site and Connector. This means that, generally, you’ll have to choose between an aggressive position to which you push and staying on the site to defend passively. You won’t always be able to pick the middle ground, as chances are high you’ll receive a few bullets in the back during your retreat.
Molotov - Tunnels into Playground
When players want to push towards the A-Site, generally, they’ll send one person through Connector while the rest push from Tunnels into Playground. These players are forced through a narrow exit, giving you the perfect opportunity to throw a Molotov grenade their way and burn this concentrated pile of players to a crisp.
To throw this Molotov, run along A-Short towards Connector, and aim towards the middle of the first slab making up the wall in front of the greenery. Keep running alongside the right wall, making sure not to bump into the green bench. The exact moment you run along the green bench, jump up and let loose. Make sure to practice this a few times so you get a good feeling as to how wide and far you should run.
Flash - A-Long
Playing from Bank, you can easily tell when enemies are pushing A-Long, but it’s often dangerous to peek, as an AWP or zerg are likely to guarantee you an early demise. Luckily, there is an easy flash you can throw from behind the truck which should blind every enemy looking in your direction and is rather hard to detect from A-Long.
Hugging the corner of the truck and the fence in front of you, look at the black spot next to the floor gutter in front of you. Throw the flashbang at that exact spot and it will bounce perfectly to blind all of your enemies on Long. If you decide to push them, be careful not to overextend as you’ll be left open to the enemies from Short and Toilets.
Smoke - A-Long
Although the CT-side usually does not require any fancy smokes as they easily get to the site first, it can be quite useful to know how to smoke Long in case of a retake. This will allow you to focus on Short and Toilets, and pressure enemies into pushing through the smoke.
To throw this smoke, stand in the corner right up the stairs going down to B. Aim at the lamp on the building to the right and aim slightly towards the left. Release the smoke and you’re good to go.
Molotov - Default
Another useful lineup will douse the default plant position in a sea of flames. This forces the enemy to use a smoke grenade to extinguish the flames or reposition to a different plant position which eliminates the angles from Short and Toilets.
From the previous spot, move forward and to the left until the crane in the background lines up with the fence in front of you. Then, aim towards the middle of the top left floor of the apartments in the distance. Release the Molotov, and the bomb planter will be in for a nasty surprise.
Connector
Unlike many other maps, Overpass does not have a ‘mid’ area. Instead, it has the Connector, a long and dark hallway that serves as the connecting piece between all sites and sides. Due to the close angles, players can do devastating damage even with pistols and shotguns. Consequently, it can be a crucial position to defend.
Smoke - One Way
There is really only one smoke line-up you should remember, which gives you a one-way smoke. In other words, you’ll easily be able to see the enemies, whereas it will be near impossible for them to spot you.
Standing in the corner at the bottom of the first stairway leading into the Connector, aim at the ridge next to the small stairway right at the bottom. Put your crosshair on the same height as the bottom of the orange arrow to the right. Release the smoke, and slowly crawl onto the stairs. There, you’ll see that there is a small gap through which you can easily mow down your enemies.
Flash - Sewers
If you are fairly confident the connector is clear, you can throw a handy pop-flash that will help your teammate on Short kill any assailants headed his way. However, as this position leaves you open entirely for Connector, be sure to make use of this line-up only if you think the coast is clear.
Put yourself in the corner of the hallway and the second stairs in Connector. There, crouch and look up towards the edge of the stairs in front of you. Then, throw the flashbang and it will bounce perfectly behind you, through the window, and into Sewers.
B-Site
Next up, we have the B-Site. Contrary to the other site, this one consists entirely of claustrophobic spaces, forcing players to check behind many objects and expose themselves to different angles. Consequently, utility usage will be crucial in holding back your enemies. Note that most of these line-ups will give you an easy and safe way to smoke these positions, but you might achieve the exact same results by throwing these from the site itself and just chucking them into the general area where they need to land!
Smoke - B-Short
Usually, enemies will push at the same time from both Short and Monster. Smoking one of these angles can help you delay the assault, and maybe even defeat the initial attackers that push prematurely on Monster. The first one of these line-ups is a Short smoke.
To throw this one, stand in the left corner of the dumpster in CT-Spawn. There, aim at the inwards corner of the electricity pole looming above you behind truck. Simply release the smoke, and you and your teammates can rest easy for a few seconds knowing enemies are less likely to push from short.
Smoke - Sewers
However, if you have a teammate playing in Connector who has a smoke, it might be better to aggressively take control of Short. By smoking Connector, your teammate can open the door at the same time you push through, practically netting you guaranteed kills and control of that position.
This time, stand near the edge of the shack to the left of the truck and above the stairs leading down to the B-Site. Aim towards the rightmost corner of the gap between the bars on top of the third container on the truck, and release. This will smoke Sewers, giving you and your teammate some extra time to establish control.
Smoke - Monster
Finally, you can also take control of Monster or simply delay the enemies’ push with a cloud of smoke there. Importantly, this smoke will land towards the site of the attackers, making sure your enemies can’t hide behind the smoke in the tunnel and surprise you with a quick counter-attack.
Once again, this smoke is thrown from CT-Spawn. Position yourself in front of the exhaust on the side of the truck cabin and look upwards to your left. There, aim at the cable you see running behind the triangle formed by the electricity pole in front of you. Release the smoke, and you can safely push towards the left side of Monster.
Conclusion
Overpass can be an incredibly fun and interesting map and offers many defensive possibilities. Playing on the map can only be described as a dance to the death with your enemies: depending on your enemy’s playstyle, you will have to take aggressive control or fall back to a more passive approach. The line-ups in this guide should equip you with the knowledge required to effectively counter your enemies’ assaults. However, don’t throw these grenades at random, but evaluate what positions your enemies are likely to play, and act accordingly. Finally, make sure to communicate with your teammates and use your utility to take control of key positions on the map such as short B, and you will single-handedly carry your team to the win.
