Interview with Azingy over the LCS's first week, the Jungle Meta, and his Summer Split expectations

An interview with our starting LCS Jungler after the first week of the campaign.

Last weekend, our LCS League of Legends squad started their summer campaign. After losing to CLG on Saturday, the team rallied and was able to take a decisive win against Cloud 9 on Sunday. After the games, Jason 'Hunterkiller' Mulcahy sat down with Andrew 'Azingy' Zamarripa to talk to him about the games and the changes made to the Jungle meta in the 5.10 patch.

Hi everyone, this is Jason from Team Dignitas, here with Azingy after Week 1 Day 2 of the Summer Split of the LCS. After such a convincing defeat from CLG yesterday, you guys really came back and took it against Cloud 9 today. What's the mindset coming in for the rest of the LCS?

Azingy: We want to win as many games as possible to see how high we can get in the standings.

Well, okay, that's a great answer. Was it a fluke yesterday, or was it a fluke today?

Azingy: Yesterday [CLG] was definitely winnable. They did very small things to get massive advantages. One of them was a kill that was weird that they got two towers after that.

With the Ashe arrow mid?

Azingy: Yeah.

It seems like today against Cloud 9 there were a lot of small advantages. You getting the first blood, the steal of the first dragon, that led to a tiny advantage that easily snowballed into a 8k gold lead into a baron into a 15k gold lead. So was it using those small advantages to build up like CLG did?

Azingy: Yeah. There was one point in the game where we got dragon and top tower. That is such a massive advantage, the other team got nothing. I think dragon was stolen by Gnar Q. That helped us get all the dragons really fast. No, we didn't get fifth dragon that game, but we got fourth dragon very early. We pretty much got every objective. We got a lot of towers and the enemy wasn't able to take one from us.

Yeah, that was something the casters kept reiterating. Talking over and over about how yesterday you guys didn't get any towers against CLG, but today you almost got the perfect game against Cloud 9. I think you guys gave up three kills.

Azingy: Yeah, very snowbally games. If you don't get any towers at all, it's very bad. You need the gold.

Speaking about champion picks, what did you think about Ashe, because she showed up in both games against CoreJJ's Kallista and it definitely wasn't as good of a pick today.

Azingy: I think it can be a really game-changing pick because her ult is a very long stun. No one really has a 3 and a half second stun and it's global. If you can get someone killed and get an objective after the kill and snowball after that, then Ashe is a pretty good pick.

Leading into your play, yesterday you picked Sejuani, but today even though Sejuani was up, you picked Zac. What do you think about Zac in the current meta?

Azingy: I think, for that game, it was a lot easier to be useful as Zac because Ashe and Kog are targets you want to hit with Zac and catch out for your teammates and they don't have any dashes at all. Sejuani, I'm actually not sure how good I'd do that game on Sejuani. I still need a little more work on Sejuani, but I'm almost there. I just need to make sure I don't have any mechanical mistakes when I Sejuani next time.

So what do you think about the current meta? Right now on live, Gragas and Sejuani were both nerfed, well Sejuani was actually buffed, but anyways, do you think we're going back to a Warrior style Jungle, or do you think it will stay Cinderhulk?

Azingy: I think it will stay Cinderhulk, because the nerfs on Sejuani and Gragas they weren't that big. Maybe for Sejuani, but Sejuani's W is still pretty good. And they didn't nerf Zac at all. Maybe you'll see more Zac.

Zac and Nunu?

Azingy: Yeah, but you know, I look at the other competitive scenes and they don't use Zac that much. So I'm not sure if they'll start using him.

What do you think about the Rek'Sai nerfs? Because she took a giant hit to her base health.

Azingy: Yeah that nerf was... that is quite a big difference, that's like one auto-attack. Maybe you won't be able to take one more tower shot. I think people are going to pick Rek'Sai the same amount, but we'll see.

Leading back into the LCS, CLG was playing with Pobelter and Incarnation was playing with Cloud 9. What did you think about the new arrivals?

Azingy: Well when we played against Incarnation, I don't think he was able to do much because the game was so fast and they needed a slow game with Kog'Maw. I don't see much value in a prediction, he's probably going to be a good mid laner. When we played against CLG, they were able to get that late game, they were able to have level 16 Kog'Maw. Maybe they didn't reach level 16 that game, but after they got Baron they were close. You don't want to have a really fed Kog'Maw in the late game, it's just so hard.

Finally, what are your predictions for yourself, coming into the rest of the split?

Azingy: It's pretty hard to predict for myself. I want to keep trying and see how good I can get.

Well that's a great answer, do you have anyone you'd like to thank?

Azingy: I'd like to thank my fans and our sponsors: Alienware, SCAN, Multiplay, Twitch, TP-Link, Corsair Gaming, Intel, WD, AKRacingEsportify, and iiyama.

Catch our LCS squad in action this weekend, when they face the two teams at the bottom of the table: Team Dragon Knights on Saturday and Team 8 on Sunday. Both games are the last contests of the evening, at 7:00 PM EST. Follow Azingy on Twitter, and follow Team Dignitas for up-to-date information about the team.
