Hi guys, Roscoe here with Billy, week 6. You've been here for about 5 weeks. It feels like you've been here a bit longer than that, but it's been a quick journey so far. You jumped into the main roster pretty quickly, so how has it been for you? It's been a life change, right?
BillyBoss: I would say yes. Before this, I was just going to school and now I'm playing League 12 or more hours a day, just improving, see what I can do. I'm definitely going the full 40 yards on trying to improve and I'm practicing every day. It's a lot of work, but it's pretty enjoyable as well.
What's the best thing you like about team so far? Maybe the players, the organisation?
BillyBoss: I would say just our living situation is nice; I just have to focus on the game. The players are very accommodating as well. Every piece of criticism I get is very constructive, even on the LCS games that I've messed up. I can see where I do wrong and I'm improving very drastically because of the friendly environment around us. I like the fact that we have a chef, everything is accommodating for us. I just have to play League and focus on improving.
Talking about improving and playing on the LCS stage, how have you felt while playing? Have you been nervous, have you gotten a bit more confidence over the weeks?
BillyBoss: The first 3 weeks I was really nervous and it really affected my play. Last week we played against NRG and TSM and we lost against NRG pretty badly, but overall that week I did not feel nervous at all, I was playing how I play in scrims. The TSM game was nerve-wracking because of the TSM fans and how the crowd is, but I can definitely see myself playing how I do in scrims more and more on the LCS stage.
Last few weeks have been rough, a lot of 0-2's and maybe the occasional 1-1, but you guys had a really good game against TSM. In LCS and Chill we joked about how you've just flipped the switch, turned it on and started playing League of Legends. What do you think went well to have you guys turn that around and to create such a statement game against TSM? What do you think actually happened?
BillyBoss: Our losses previously were about f****ing up a lane swap or just a really poor composition that actually has no place in anything. The games versus TIP, both of them, even the Ekko Fox game that we've won... Almost every game before this week our compositions didn't make sense. In the TSM game in particular I was very comfortable with every champion in the draft and I knew my role on the team. When you know your role in the team there's not much variance in what you can do. If you mess up its not because of a first-time situation that you've occurred, it's just that you f***ed up. I just knew my role on the team, everyone knew they role on the team with the comp that we ran and it's was a pretty smooth sail, even though we had a very boring early game.
Do you think that focusing on compositions is going to be one of the keys to success in the next few weeks?
BillyBoss: Yeah, that and identifying the enemy team comp which we failed to do at that NRG game. We've realised it's a poke comp very, very late in the game. Overall, I have a very high confidence on how to improve and we know the mistakes that we've done. Every 0-2 week we've learned and the TSM game is just the beginning, I'd say.
Speaking of improving, friendly criticism and learning from the mistakes, what do you want to improve personally about yourself in your play?
BillyBoss: It's a little bit of everything. I don't really have scrims this week and I don't think I have glary weaknesses. I can just be more solid all-around whether it'd be missing 5 cs in the laning phase, very minor things like that, or 1 second off TP timing. It's very minor at this point. Overall, it's just a little bit of everything, there's not one particular area that I deem is unworthy right now.
Are you comfortable in the top lane meta?
BillyBoss: Top lane meta is just very - anyone can do anything. You see, like Immortals are playing carry tops. There isn't a set of 5 champions you have to play. Right now, I'm very comfortable in the top lane meta. I've set a list of champions and they always work. I don't think anyone's style is better than the others, right now it's only what your team needs to succeed and I can play a lot of champions that I've mastered already. Top lane meta is not a list of champions, it's what your team needs.
It sounds like it's a healthy place; you can go Malphite, Quinn, Fiora, Lulu... No one is too unbalanced. Well, maybe Fiora does pretty well.
BillyBoss: Yeah, Fiora does do pretty well but she's still not unbeatable. She's just a very high priority pick right now.
Are there any top laners that you've had to go against that surprised you in terms of their skill? That you've had really hard time against?
BillyBoss: No, not really. The first weeks I was pretty self-destructive, I was like “Oh, I'm playing with all these LCS top laners...” But now I can see that they're just like any other player. No one is too amazing that it's unbeatable, except maybe Huni. Huni is very good. For everyone else I feel like it's even playing field. Doing standard lanes, I don't think I can get crushed by anyone. There's no one in particular.
My next question was about how you mentally prepare yourself for the games but it sounds like you've kind of gotten the field for different people and that you lost your initial nervousness. How is it now, mentally preparing for the games? Do you think against whom are you playing specifically or do you just say “I'm up against some person”?
BillyBoss: I just play the matchup that should be played, champion to champion, not player to player. I still have some nervousness, I'm still not playing how I should play, how I play offline to how I play online. As long as I know my role in the team, I'll perform.
Let's get to know Billy a little more. Before you were playing League of Legends, what were you studying at school? Tell us a little more about yourself.
BillyBoss: I was a Junior in the second semester in College, which means I only have around year and a half to get my degree. I was studying Information Technology as well as Philosophy and Economics. A double minor with major in Information Technology. I've been to College probably longer than most players in LCS, although I do know some of the players have degrees. I definitely have more holistic view on the world because this isn't the first major step in my life. A lot of players come from High School and this is the first time that they've been away from home and their parents. I have a more rounding view; I understand what's needed to become a professional player. My mental is definitely in the right place probably because of my past experiences with the College, but I still think this is surreal experience and I'm still enjoying it day to day.
You've been to the College dorms, to the typical College living. Do you have any hobbies you like to do aside LCS/League of Legends?
BillyBoss: I like to go outside running or lifting weights. Takes my mind off the game for a moment, moves my body so I don't feel too sluggish. Nowadays, this past 5 weeks, I've been only playing games and watching vods and sometimes going outside to stretch a bit. I'm not burnt out or anything, I love playing League, and I'll continue to do so. Right now, there are no hobbies; it's just League of Legends.
Do you have any shootouts for the end of the interview? Anyone you'd like to thank, fans or sponsors?
BillyBoss: Thank you for the fans and every DIG sponsor on my shirt that I can't read, sorry, haha!
