PBE Footage: The Sona Rework

Lets talk about this sona rework. We got clarity and kit changes as well as some visual updates for the Maven of the Strings.

As a support main, Sona is a champion that I've always enjoyed. The fact that she has no real fit into the current meta has been something I have come to accept. Although I still find joy in playing Sona, when I saw on the PBE that she was
receiving a rework I couldn’t wait to get my hands on her. With the addition of a visual update as well, in more ways than one.

Sona has had several changes appear on the PBE (Public Beta Environment) recently. The first to appear was some changes to the particles, scaling, and the way she affects other champions. The way that Riot has made this rework enables Sona to be a more strategy based support instead of the button smashing Sona of the past.

Update: the skill aura's have been increased to 350 units.

Passive Change:
Q Powerchord amplification down from +100% damage to +50% damage

The Sona Q // Hymn of Valor

♦Creates a 300 unit aura that lasts for 3 seconds.
♦Sona and allies touched by the aura get 40/50/60/70/80 (+0.25 AP) bonus magic damage on their next auto attack.
♦Buff lasts 3 seconds
♦Each ally Sona tags with the aura increases the duration of the aura by 0.5 seconds
♦Cooldown increased to 10 seconds from 7 seconds
♦No longer grants persistent AP and AD aura
♦Mana cost increased by 5 at all ranks (50/55/60/65/70)

So to make it simple, the blue ring around Sona is the area where your allies must stand to get bonus magic damage on their next auto attack. Although the buff is no longer consistent AD and AP damage, this allows Sona to better time and strategize when to give her AD Carry a beefed up auto attack along with her Q poke for a most satisfying trade.

The Sona W // Aria of Perserverance

♦Initial cast heals Sona plus the lowest health nearby ally for 25/50/75/100/125 (+ 0.25 AP) heath. This heal is increased by 1% for each 1% missing health of the target.
♦Creates a 300 unit aura that lasts for 3 seconds.
♦Sona and her allies touched by the aura get a shield that blocks 40/60/80/100/120 (+0.2 AP) damage.
♦Each ally Sona tags with the aura increases the duration of the aura by 0.5 seconds
♦Cooldown increased to 10 seconds from 7 seconds
♦No longer grants persistent MR and Armor aura
♦Mana cost increased by 5 at all ranks (65/70/75/80/85)

This is potentially my favorite change to Sona. A shield has now been added to her heal. Even though it only directly heals one ally now, when an ally moves onto the 300 unit aura they are blessed with a shield as well. Think about the potential for team fights.

The Sona E // Song of Celerity

♦Initial cast grants Sona a boost of 13%/14%/15%/16%/17% + (7.5% for every 100 AP) move speed. This decays down to the amount Sona grants to her allies.
♦Creates a 300 unit aura that lasts for 3 seconds
♦Grants allies touched by the aura 10%/11%/12%/13%/14% move speed for 1.5 seconds.
♦Each ally Sona tags with the aura increases the duration of the aura by 0.5 seconds
♦Cooldown increased to 10 seconds from 7 seconds
♦No longer grants persistent move speed aura
♦No longer grants allies % move speed on cast

The only real changes to the Song of Celerity were the same aura changes that the past two moves had recieved. This was the smallest change to her skill set.

Sona's Ultimate // Cresendo

Ranking up Crescendo increases the strength of Sona’s auras
+10/20/30 magic damage for Hymn of Valor
+10/20/30 extra shield for Aria of Perseverance
+2%/4%/6% move speed for Song of Celerity
Crescendo has new VFX that more accurately show the affected area of the spell

Now the particles for Sona's Cresendo accurately show its range. This means less horribly missed Sona ults, especially on my part. Also on Hymn of Valor (Q) every rank in (R) gets extra magic damage. An extra shield of Aria of Perseverance (W) and extra movement speed on Song of Celerity (E).

All of these changes will help Sona to become a stronger, more strategic pick in the solo queue scene.

Along with the particle and moveset changes Sona has recived visual updates to enhance her clarity as well.

I am very excited about these changes and see a soon rekindling of the Sona love in ranked. Although I do not believe these changes are enough to make Sona a top 3 support at the moment, I believe this will definitely bring her back in the game as a more poke based AP support. As more changes occur to Sona I have planned a new matchups, masteries, and item set post on how I find the new Sona rework will shine the most.
