Stereotypes in League of Legends
Yeah, there are stereotypes in League of Legends. Lets face it, we all are thinking it.
Yeah, there are stereotypes in League of Legends. Lets face it, we all are thinking it.
We all have that role or champion we simply do not like. No matter who plays the role or champion a stereotype just seems to follow them around like a soggy grey rain cloud. For me, I strongly dislike top laners, always bullying around others thinking they are unstoppable. For others it is junglers, they never seem to gank my lane anyway. I swear all they do all game is frolic in the jungle petting the creeps and smelling the flowers. Let’s talk about the League of Legends stereotypes. We all know they exist. Well, sort of anyway.
When I started to play the wonderful game we all know as League of Legends I noticed a few patterns amongst the summoners. When you think of Satan what is the first image that pops into your head? Mushrooms, lots of poisonous mushrooms that lead to a monstrous Yordle named Teemo. The ultimate troll pick, whenever Teemo is locked in I can almost hear the audible team sigh. I myself have instantly thought “gg” when this has happened before. But why? Honestly, Teemo is a strong champion. I wanted to play him early in my League of Legends youth. It was only later on when I was supporting as Nami that I realized why. One bush. One blind face check lead me to a burst cloud of trippy mushroom poisonous gas that took away half of my health in an instant. Before I knew it, I was dead. Teemo was across the map on the top lane. He didn’t even have to lift his always taunting eyelids, and I was dead. From that moment on, Teemo was the devil incarnated into my safe haven. He and every summoner who unleashed this fury spawn onto the rift was evil.
Soon after that I learned to hate other champions like Master Yi, Katarina, and yes the donger himself Heimerdinger. For what reason? None other than the pure fear of knowing my health was about to drop rapidly the moment they glitched onto the mini map. Along with the hatred I felt for champions I noticed a trend amongst the lanes. Especially in Champion Select.
Top or feed. A phrase one never wants to hear. Everyone knows if a top laner does not get their role, they are bound to throw a monstrous hissy fit. Curse a lot, and they might even tell you to suck their nether regions. Top lane is a lane full of the kind of people who love to be brutes. They are thick skinned and like to appear that way. They love to be in the middle of the fight to feel the spoils of war in its fullest. They take no pleasure on the backline but have to face the front lines of a fight. Why you ask? Maybe they have something to make up for in the downstairs department.
Junglers. Always hiding in the jungle. Oh yes they may appear like they are going to gank your lane, but as soon as you engage they change their mind due to a respawned golem camp. You should be able to take care of your own lane. Come on now it’s not like you have been ganked 4 times already and never received a gank yourself. But wait, when you do get a gank they ‘somehow’ get the kill. Greedy popsicle sucker, you know they did it on purpose anyway. The jungle is for those summoners who don’t like to be directly in the line of fight, but when you don’t finish that kill they will be more than happy to clean up after you. Oh and mid laners, I’m Lee Sin, of course I need blue buff more than you.
Mid lane. Senpai please carry me. The rest of the team feeds and it is up to you to win the game. There is no relief for mid laners and they know it. When bot lane feeds and top lane is pushed to an interior turret leave it up to Yasuo to carry the team to victory. At least that is what they think. Mid laners seem to have this ‘team leader complex’. You know, when it all seems bleak look to mid lane to save the day. Summoners who play the mid lane tend to be the Gryffindor type of folk. They might be 4-0, they might even be invincible, but leave it up to a mid laner to charge in 1v5 to lose the game. They might even continue to do so wondering why they keep dying. This is the definition of insanity you know.
We all know that AD Carry arrogance. That please protect me so I can have all the glory feel. While in the pro scene the AD Carry is supposed to ‘carry’ the team in damage, solo queue AD Carries believe that they are the cat’s meow. Everyone needs to fall to their deaths and worship the ground they auto attack on. Sona, why did you not throw yourself in front of that jinx ult when I so stupidly rushed into a 3v1 ganked lane. That is your job support. Die for me. There is no need for a fed support. I am the only one who needs to be fed. When an AD Carry might be at the nexus rely on them to ping spam the top lane creep wave proclaiming it their realm to pillage. Summoners who play AD Carry tend to have a ‘me me me’ personality, but as soon as their support leaves and the team doesn’t peel for them they become this meek weak little wasp. While they may pack one hell of a sting they are easily crushed without the hive.
Oh supports. The real cowards of the rift. Support mains in champion select may seem nice. They may even seem compliant, but once their role is taken away GG everyone. Expect a feeder. Supports are that annoying little brother always telling everyone what to do when they don’t have any real work themselves to do. These are the summoners who believe they carry the whole game on their backs. Constantly complaining about the AD Carry’s CS when they don’t have to focus on CS themselves. Don’t even start on the kill stealing. Caitlyn may have just powered up her Ace in the Hole, but leave it to Morgana to swoop in and dark bind right before the ult goes off. Stealing the kill and wasting the Caitlin ult. ‘Kill secured’ they coo, but we all know they are just greedy little leeches waiting, always watching. By the way, where are the wards? There is no vision in the jungle!
Yes all the roles have stereotypes. We all constantly complain about them every day. In ranked we see this with all the toxicity. Other roles not putting any faith in the others, but what if we looked at the other roles with a renewed eye. Yes, top laners tend to be a little bit on the bully side, but who would tank all the damage the enemy team puts out. Who would be there as the first line of defense? Top lane is the team’s shield, always ready to take the damage.
Junglers may not always be there when you need them, but when your lane is losing and the enemy Draven is about to get a double kill who is there to turn the fight around? Evelynn at your service. Jungle is the team’s Batman, swooping in to save the day only to return to the shadows leaving the enemy team speechless. What just happened?
Mid laners may think they are the best thing since sliced bread, but when Moakai is zoning out Tristana, threatening the whole game, Syndra is there to burst him down and peel for the win. Mid lane is that X SP. Attack used on Gengar at the most critical moment in a Pokemon battle.
AD Carries may be ungrateful and power hungry, but who else can take down turrets like Jinx can. AD Carry is a rallying force that will shred the enemy team. Pentakill. Ace. Victory.
Supports may whine and point fingers at the rest of the team’s mistakes, but when the enemy team is about to ace you Soraka’s wish instantly heals the whole team turning the entire team fight around leading to an unforeseen victory. Support is the central nervous system of a team. Warding, watching the map, peeling, somehow keeping you alive.
Although these stereotypes are funny and somehow very true at times, next time you find yourself in the middle of a hard game wanting to rage. Remember, every role is difficult. Every lane has its own struggles. They are thinking the same thing about you, so why not be the one to give a kid a break this time. You might be surprised with the outcome.
