Teamfighting as an ADC

A short guide giving you some tips on how to teamfight more effectively as an ADC.

If there is one thing I know to be true in League of Legends, it is that every solo queue game is sure to have a teamfight in it. Teamfights can be very volatile, one slight misstep can amount to a massive advantage for the enemy, and as an AD carry, you should be well aware if this fact. You don't have the durability of a tank or bruiser, and you don't have the crowd control ability of a support. Marksmen champions usually have one escape tool- if that, and a single misplay by you could mean a loss of a major damage source for your team.

Priorities: As an ADC, you want to get off as much damage as you can while staying as safe as possible. Generally, you should prioritize safety over damage. For example, lets say your team catches out the enemy jungler. By all means, get off as much damage as you can; however, once you see that he is getting close to his team's Malphite and you are almost close enough to be hit by his
Unstoppable Force, be sure to back off.

Positioning: Positioning is one of those words that has been thrown around so many times it has started to lose meaning. What I use this term to mean for teamfighting as an ADC is placing your character on the map in a point of balance between dealing damage to the enemy team whilst reducing your risk of dying as much as possible. So how do we position properly?

To start, let us see where you should be located. Down below are the two basic types of team comps: One with a mage and one with an assassin.

This gives a rough interpretation of where each role should be positioned during the teamfight. As you can see, with either an assassin comp or a mage comp, you want to be in the backline when playing ADC. I think this is an idea most players know, however impatience and risky play can make them stray from this. In addition, try to literally position yourself so that one of your tankier allies is between you and the enemy damage source. Allow your allied Braum or Mundo to block enemy skillshots for you. Moreover, stay near your allies who have crowd control. When enemies breach the frontline to kill you, your allies can potentially lock them down to keep you safe.

Fancy Feet: Sometimes, your allied CC and tanks won't be enough. It will be up to you to keep yourself alive now. If you are playing a champ with an escape such as Tristana, Lucian, or Corki, try to save them as long as you can in the teamfight and only use them to reposition, dodge enemy CC or damage, and to get away from a dangerous champion. Unfortunately, if you are playing an escapeless champion your job will be a bit harder. If you are a trinity force using champ like Kog'maw or a champ with a movement speed boost like Draven, then you can use the extra movement speed to dodge critical enemy abilities like a Thresh hook or an Ahri charm. To do this effectively, you have to be calm and ready; however, with a bit of practice sidestepping abilities isn't too difficult.

The fun part: Once you can keep yourself alive on instinct, you can get off a massive amount of damage in a teamfight. When playing ADC, you don't have the burst ability of an assassin or the AOE of a mage, what you do bring to the table is a consistent punch of damage. You aren't going deep to kill the enemy ADC like an assassin will, focus the biggest enemy threat you can while keeping yourself safe. Usually this means wearing down the enemy frontline while your frontline gets worn down by their ADC. If you and your team can keep you alive longer than his team can keep him alive, you are likely to win the fight.

Final Thoughts: As an ADC, your survival in a teamfight is vital. Remember, While flashing to dodge the enemy's crowd control is a good move, a better move would have been to not get yourself into a spot where you needed to use your flash in the first place. Also, try to stay calm throughout the game so you can make your decisions with a clear mind. Impatience will get you killed. Take a deep breath and wait for your team to engage and then move safely into position for the teamfight. Good luck out on the rift summoners!
