The Best Mid Laners to Master in League of Legends

We looked at win-rates based on experience at Support last time. Let’s look at Mid Lane now and see who the best Mid Laners are to invest time into. 50 games or more is our starting line!

Last time we visited LeagueOfGraphs, we snuck a peek at their Champion Experience List and talked about the top rated Supports amongst their highest winrates. Well, this time we’re going to take a look at the best Mid Laners for you to main in the same fashion.

Naturally, winrate doesn’t mean everything and these lists do get updated constantly, so if you decide to take a look at these charts a couple patches from now you may see changes. Additionally, since you can’t filter through statistics based on what role, some of the results do factor results from other lanes. And since these charts are based on games played, this is less of a ‘This Champion is Broken’ style list, and more of a ‘This Champion pays off with dedication’ list.

So, join me as we look at the Top 10 Mid Laners to Main based on Experience and Mastery!

Annie - #2nd Overall / 1st Mid

No surprise here to see AnnieBot’s cult influencing the list. As of patch 11.8, Annie is the top ranking Mid Laner on the list and holds a commanding sway. Showing that if you truly master the simple yet effective kit of this fiery little Mage, you too can be an effective Solo-Queue monster.

Annie’s kit teaches patience, vision control, last-hitting, and target priority. All of which are fundamental aspects of League of Legends. So, if you’re looking to get back to basics, or getting started with your mastery of the game of League itself, investing in Annie clearly pays off as she’s ranked number 2 overall with a 60% winrate beyond 50+ games.

Lissandra - #9th Overall / 2nd Mid

Lissandra firmly plants herself on this list at the number 9 spot overall and the second true Mid Laner to grace the list. And despite Annie leading the way, I’m a bit surprised by her inclusion here. Lissandra isn’t one of the most popular Champions in League of Legends, so this placement could indicate a dedicated core of Lissandra mains applying influence, but even if it’s a group of dedicated mains, to support an estimated 57% winrate beyond 50 games shows that once you’re familiar enough with the limits of the True Ice Queen of the Freljord, you can really rule over the Solo-Queue realm.

To break down what makes her so effective, Lissandra is one of those Champions with multiple Keystones that are effective with her. Her kit is pretty simple to understand with both offensive and defensive power present. Comet, Electrocute, and Aftershock are all respectable choices, promoting poke, burst, and anti-assassin play patterns, while her E+W+R combo can lock an individual person down with near perma CC. Additionally, her ultimate is effectively a free Zhonya’s Hourglass, as she can dive in or ult herself defensively to avoid big burst, bait out abilities, or soak target focus for just a smidge to allow her team to get in and on to who they need.

Talon - #12th Overall / 3rd Mid

A bit surprised to see Talon here, I was expecting the likeness of another Noxian Assassin to find their way to the list, but when you considered each of their popularities, it’s no surprise that Talon wins in experience due to his results not being as dictated by popularity as Katarina’s.

Regardless, Talon is a notorious low ELO pubstomp Champion. His kit is simply designed to push and roam, and his inclusion in a game is the bane of any Marksmen mains out there. And there isn’t much more to say about his play pattern beyond this. However, to note some effective Keystone choices, Talon can opt for two sets pretty effectively. The first of these sets is naturally Electrocute which promotes his burst potential on a single target. The second is Conqueror which Talon can stack surprisingly well. This set doesn’t reduce his burst by a ton and can make it so the slippery assassin carries a bit of pseudo-tankiness to him, especially if he opts for more bruiser oriented items like Goredrinker.

Akshan - #21st Overall / 4th Mid

Another surprising Champ hits the list. With Akshan being so new, I figured it’d be a dream for him to make the list. But there seem to be many able and willing mains for League’s newest Sentinel out and about.

Something to consider about Akshan is his unique resurrection passive. This effect likely coincides with his results for folks that main him beyond 50 games. Not only do they know how to approach teamfights with his unique entry and exit abilities, but they also know how to position themselves to get the most of Akshan’s auto-based damage. This brings up the passive, as he likely wants to come into fights a beat behind the initial engagement, allowing him to bring back up those that may have scuffed it for the early tag of an engagement.

Something else to factor here is Akshan’s viability as a Bot Laner. Likely, those that main Akshan have experience with Bot Lane, so plenty of players likely opt to maintain their playrate of him due to his flexibility in League’s other carry role, which speaks well for the point of article - Maining Akshan clearly pays off.

Kassadin - #23rd Overall / 5th Mid

Kassadin, the bane of seasons past, finds his way amongst the upper echelons of Leagues 150+ Champions as well as into our list of considered Mid Laners, and that’s not surprising. Any game that errs on the longer side of things is going to ultimately favor Kassadin as he’s a scaling monster. Couple this scaling power with his evasiveness, you’ve got to really know when his biggest windows are and who to get on top of to make the most of Kassadin’s kit.

That said, he also has some flexible selection with Keystones that keep his playrate up and his matchup potential diverse. Fleet Footwork, Electrocute, Unsealed Spellbook, and Conqueror, all diversify his matchup potential. Knowing the right rune to take in each instance makes you an expert Kassadin, and then playing around those strengths will take you to the next level.

Ahri - #25th Overall / 6th Mid

Ahri slides in at 6th overall which is an impressive standing. Especially when you consider that she’s ranked 25th overall out of all League Champions, it goes to show that despite Ahri’s simple kit there’s a ton of payoff in mastering one of League’s most popular picks.

Ahri’s another one with flexible abilities. Adaptive to both Control Mage and Assassin styles of play, Ahri can opt for Glacial Augment sets alongside an Everfrost build path to play a more supportive and facilitative roll for her team, or she can swing full assassin and run Electrocute through a Luden’s build path to really capitalize on her burst. Additionally, the Everfrost alongside Electrocute isn’t a bad run either, and tends to be a route that many opt for to have a mixed stance between both extreme builds.

Ahri’s got plenty of mobility with her dashes on R, cheeky Flash-Charm plays to make, and with effort behind landing the true-damage of her Q followback, there’s plenty to learn and master with this lovely fox.

Anivia - #26th Overall / 7th Mid

In my friend circle, I’ve got like 6 Anivia Mains alone. So, it’s not surprising to see her up near the top of this list considering how strong those players are at the Cryo-Pheonix.

Anivia’s a control freak with her ability to lock down pathways with her wall, stall games out with her ultimate, and set up the juiciest plays for some of League’s best Junglers. When you package all that with her impressive scaling, there’s no surprise that Anivia rocks her way towards the top of the overall Champions to main. Once you’ve mastered the ins and outs of the timings of her abilities, they layer into a beautiful cadence of spells that can be really frustrating for anyone that has to play within her range. This Wild God of the Freljord certainly pays off when mastered.

Cassiopeia - #28th Overall / 8th Mid

Like Anivia, this is another scaling Mid that’s found her way into the list. And it’s no surprise either. Considering that Solo-Queue tends to be a very “go-forward” atmosphere where players just like to run at each other, having such a clutch ultimate as Petrifying Gaze in your pocket can really punish those with aggressive habits.

Cassiopeia also has flexible rune options to consider as well. Some folks like to run Comet and Corrupting Potion sets to maximize the burn of her poisons early. Others like the Phase Rush set that gives the snake a little extra ‘sneaky-slitheriness’. More popular than the others is the Conqueror set which promotes Cassio’s desires to draw out teamfights and spray down cripple poisons alongside her Twin Fang spam.

Ziggs - #30 Overall / 9th Mid

Though more prominent in the Bot Lane this season, I still consider Ziggs a Mid Laner at heart, and thus am including him.

Ziggs, like Anivia, is one of those Champions that just becomes more obnoxious as the game extends. The more items that find their way into his pockets, the more damage he dishes out, and the more your waves and turrets tend to crumble from his pressure. A part of what makes him such an effective selection is his ability to take turrets and execute them once they reach a certain percentage with his W, which is why he’s being played in Bot Lane so heavily now.

Ziggs’ ability to siege and deny siege is insane, and as with any skill-shot focused Champ, once you’ve mastered the speed at which your abilities come out, your damage is going to feel like unavoidable scripting to your opponents as you toss out bombs that never seem to miss.

Veigar - #33 Overall / 10th Mid

Veigar, getting the short end of things, rounds up our last spot. But to be still within the Top 50 of overall Champs and within the Top 10 of Mid Laners isn’t so bad, right?

Well, Veigar is a scaling beast. More so than the likes that have been mentioned above as he’s literally got infinite scaling to package alongside his kit. What separates Veigar from these guys, though, is his ability to stifle not just one opponent with his control mage playstyle, but multiple. The Baby Cage, as it’s affectionately called, can corral and handle multiple players at one time, but also can be effectively timed for Veigar to land his full combo on a single opponent should the opportunity arise.

So, it’s no surprise to see a Champ with such a high impact ability finding their way into the list. Timing, patience, and positional understanding are key to be a great Veigar player.

Closing Out

Well, there you have it folks. These are the Champions that show the most results for Mid Lane beyond 50 games. And unlike our Support list, I think this one is a bit devoid of anything that I would consider a cheese laner. Additionally, some of these picks like Cassio and Ziggs can opt for secondary roles in Top or Bot, which can really help you stay glued to a Champion. Because we all know, maintaining a small pool of dedicated Champions is the best way to climb in Solo-Queue.

I hope you found a new main from this list to get to work on! Good luck in Solo Queue everyone!
