The ins and outs of Power Picks

LoL is a game that always changes like many online games. The power pick is one that can change patch by patch but some champions always&

If anyone doesn't know what a power pick is let me explain. Essentially a power pick is a champion who strives on being really good and noticed game by game. These champions always do well or if given the right circumstance (get fed) carry the game to a win and at times there isn't much a team can do about it.

There are different power picks as well. Every time LoL comes out with a patch there will sometimes be a champion that absolutely destroys the game. On the other side is a champion that always seems to "own" whatever happens.

A good indicator of what a power pick is looking at what the pros are currently playing (or banning). These guys play for the better part of the day and have analysts behind them telling what is good and what is bad. For instance currently champions such as Gnar (top), Le Blanc (mid), Jarvan (jungle), Lee Sin (jungle, what a surprise!), Corki (adc), Janna (support) and Thresh (support) are pick picks and bans for the pros.

The big thing is while these champions are amazing, in solo que they may not work out for many reasons. Reasons such as mechanically they are difficult to play and your average silver player can't use the champion to his/her full potential, the composition you’re using it in doesn't work, your team has no idea how to play with the champion or the build you are using is completely wrong.

While pros are a good indicator, it doesn't mean there are no other champions amazing in solo que. Obviously any champion that gets fed is amazing and does well but I've noticed there are certain champions if they get fed or farm, they just obliterate an enemy team.

There are two champions that come into mind that have these attributes: Akali and Yi. It's amazing to think that these champions can carry a game by themselves nearly and are close to impossible to beat. A big part of why they can't be beaten is because teams just don't know how to handle them or focus them in team fights and they just have free reign on everyone. I have seen it time and time again an Akali destroying everyone and no one has any focus and is targeting whoever which means Akali just cleans up the whole fight and its good game, well played.

They aren't the only champions that exceed. Katarina with her resets is just sad to see if you are against her, Tryndamere with his crit and ultimate, Tristana who late game is probably the best champion to have and even Draven can just own everything in sight, oh and let’s not forget Vayne!

I'm sure I've missed some champions but these are ones that come to mind and hopefully you get the idea of what a power pick is.

The one thing that I see at times is players with these power picks throw games. I called it the Rambo effect. For example, a Yi jungle ganks and gets a 5-0 score. He can out duel anyone with ease and noone can deal with him but mid/late game this player believes he is invincible, becomes careless and runs into a 1v5 situation and dies....miserably.

This can happens 2 or 3 times in a game and before you know it, the last time it happens is the final push and the team with that Yi loses. It's a sad reality since that Yi can be carrying that game for the team but costs so badly because of the Rambo effect.

On the side of the coin is the team Yi is against runs around the map aimlessly and yi picks them off one by one.

One thing that must be noted is these power picks and power spikes. Don't think picking these champions are going to give you an easy game. You need to understand when they are powerful. Mages like Orianna get their power spike when she has finished 3 items. Athenes, Rabadons and Void staff. Once those items are done, Orianna becomes a an android beast! If you get fed, the power spike is sooner but if you are having a slow game, its fine, just don't feed, play the game as best you can and aim for the power spike. Summarized: Items (obviously) give champions huge power spikes.

Other champions can and will have earlier power spikes such as Corki who's mid game is amazing because of his build with the trinity force. You just have to know the champion and how he/she evolves.

So to summarize it all up. There are champions that own the game but they are not guaranteed wins and they need core items to become the carry.
