The State of the Game and the Future: An Interview With Rank 1 player on the NA server, Tarzaned

We had a talk with Tarzaned, a jungle main and current Rank 1 player on the North American server.

League of Legends' sixth season has been a tumultuous year for many in the community-especially those on the highest level of the Ranked Ladder. From the birth of Dynamic Queue to the headache of balancing Nidalee, many high elo players have voiced their discontent at the changes ushered in by Riot over the past year. We had a talk with Tarzaned, a jungle main and current Rank 1 player on the North American server, on the state of the game, the coming changes, and his future plans.

After the changes Riot has implemented to the game in the past month, do you still enjoy Solo Queue and the general state of the game? Are you happy with the direction that League of Legends is going?

Tarzaned: The moment Riot removed the option of duo queue in Ranked, I found this as my best chance of hitting top of the ladder. I play a very aggressive jungle style that is high risk/high reward and considering the fact that no voice chat is implemented into the game, I abused enemy junglers easily.

Do you play to win, or just have fun? How, if at all, do you make losing fun for yourself?

Tarzaned: I strive to be the best in everything I do, so I see no point in playing to "have fun". I don't find losing fun but I do enjoy competitive matches as I don't come across those often in solo queue.

On a broad scale, how do you feel Jungling will be affected by the upcoming changes in the next season?

Tarzaned: The changes next season will make jungling an even more team dependent role and reduce your chances of solo carrying your entire team. I think it's stupid as hell and should not go through. We already have a role designated as an aid (support) so why should we need another one? Increased timers on camps just makes no sense.

Some of the coming Jungle changes include increased camp spawn times, meaning less gold for the Jungler

More specifically, what are your thoughts on the upcoming changes to jungle camp spawn timers from one minute to two and a half minutes?

Tarzaned: As I said previously, it will be harder for a jungler to have good pathing and to power farm in order to solo carry. I feel as if invading and counter jungling will be more of a priority now as it will be super easy to set the enemy jungler behind.

Plants have been a decisive issue on Reddit and all over the League community. Do you see Plants as a positive or negative addition to the game?

Tarzaned: Negative. They're just plain stupid and pointless to me.

On your Rank 1 account, I can see a substantial number of Graves games played. With Riot’s recent desire to discourage powerfarming and changes to Armor Penetration, do you think Graves will continue to be meta in the next season?

Tarzaned: I streamed on my account which was primarily a Graves Unranked to Challenger stream. I went 51-5 (3 losses were to malzahar when he was broken as heck and I was experimenting with ghost as well). I stopped playing Graves a few patches ago as I didn't think he was good enough to compete with Hecarim/Olaf/Nunu that simply exert way too much pressure compared to him. It's hard to farm and hope none of your lanes die when playing Graves.

After climbing to Rank 1, what advice would you give your younger self to more quickly improve and climb the ladder?

Tarzaned: Dodge when you think you're going to lose/don't have your main role, get better at other roles, don't tilt and flame your teams.

You’ve stated before that you haven’t gone pro yet because you haven’t received a good enough offer from a team. Do you consider these offers more in terms of competitive drive (how good the rest of the team is) or in terms of money?

Tarzaned: I have actually not received any offers whatsoever except for a team striving to be apart of the NALCS, I believe. Believe it or not, but no teams at all have approached me aside from this one team in particular.

What, in a fantasy world, would be an offer sweet enough to make you go pro?

Tarzaned: I'd love to play for a top tier competitive team such as TSM, or C9. I know I have what it takes to be the very best and I'd love to prove myself on the international stage. I know that it's merely solo queue, but the Korean junglers did not impress me but that may simply be because of their ping.

Do you see eSports as a viable profession, now or in the future, not just for yourself but also for others?

Tarzaned: Definitely. I might look into going pro but for now I'm gonna stick with streaming/coaching.

Do you have any last words for your fans, to close out this interview?

Tarzaned: Thanks to everyone that's always been there to support me from the start. None of this would've been possible without you guys and I'm grateful to be where I am today because of you guys. Much love!
