Understanding and recognizing various champion flex picks and the many roles they serve.
Introduction
Flex picks are champions that serve and play more than one role proficiently. The goal of selecting a flex pick in champion select is to throw a curveball towards your opponents in order to confuse and force them to play it safe. Playing a flex champion means you have the freedom to opt out of an otherwise losing matchup and be placed in more comfortable role instead. Having just one or even two interchangeable flex picks gives you the advantage of having the last say in counter-picking your matchups even after your enemies think they have you counter-picked.
Top/Mid Flex Picks
Azir - Cassiopeia - Jayce - Kassadin - Lissandra
Early picking a solo lane flex pick or two does not require a commitment to a solo lane once selected. In response to a direct counterpick from your opponents, a single flex pick can simply be moved to another solo lane and if there are double solo lane flex picks, both can be swapped for the most optimum matchup.
AD/Mid Flex Picks
Corki - Ezreal - Kog'Maw
This functions similarly to how top/mid flex picks work but you will also need to account for other factors such as the strength of the overall bot lane pairing when opting to run these picks as an AD carry.
Top/Mid/Support Flex Picks
Annie - Lulu - Morgana
One of the more flexible of picks, these unique champions not only serve to fulfill two but three roles effectively. Not only are these picks extremely adjustable on a whim, they have the potential to make champion select interesting and complicated for your opponents. Although Annie and Morgana are not common picks in the solo lanes, it has seen play in the LPL and LCK and has proven to be valuable assets to team compositions that revolve around requiring a utility support or hard engage style.
Top/Mid/Jungle
Hecarim - Nidalee
If you're a fan of laning Hecarim or the odd bruiser Nidalee top, then recognizing that these picks can function in both solo lanes and even the jungle should not come as a surprise. Like the top/mid/support flex picks mentioned before, these picks give you freedom to choose the most suitable role that best assess certain situations.
Conclusion
Confusing your opponents by taking advantage of champion picks that can be played in more than one position ensures that you can easily adjust in champion select to better adhere to your win conditions. Additionally, if your favorite champion happens to be considered a viable flex pick, you have more confidence in knowing that you have more opportunities to whip it out. Experiment with other different champions and you may discover other flex picks that are just as good if not better.
