Not counting all of Ornn’s Masterwork Mythic item upgrades, there are 23 Mythic items within the game. You are only allowed to purchase one Mythic item per game and each has a distinct and unique passive. You want to purchase your Mythic item at least by your second or third item within a game. While playing in the support role, there are quite a number of ways to strategize in-game. Here are some options you have once you lock-in your champion: Utility (for when you want to stun, slow, or gain movement speed, Tank (giving you armor, magic resistance, slow or shields), Healer (allowing you to give large shields, heals), Attack Damage (chosen for champion specific scenarios), and Magic Damage (when your role requires damage over utility).
Utility
Everfrost (Ahri, Veigar)
This item allows you to unleash a cone of ice that deals 100 (+30% AP) magic damage to all enemies within its path and slows them by 65% for 1.5 seconds. Enemies hit in the center of the cone are rooted for the same duration instead. Even if the enemy dodges out of the center of the cone, you’ll still be able to slow them and allow for more follow-up attacks from you or your teammates.
This item is great for champions with a hard crowd-control follow-up so you’re able to chain the CC for more damage.
Imperial Mandate (Morgana, Lux, Braum)
If you’re playing a champion that has a slow or stun, you’re able to deal 36-60 (based on your level) bonus magic damage and marks the enemy for four seconds. Allies that damage marked enemies, consume the mark for 90-150 (based on your ally’s level) bonus magic damage, and this item grants you both 20% bonus movement speed for two seconds.
If you’re playing a champion with a slow or stun such as Morgana or Braum, then this item is your best go-to.
Shurelya’s Battlesong (Sona, Rakan, Seraphine)
This is one of my favorite choices if I’m maybe playing support that isn’t super mobile. This item’s passive is useful if you have an ability with healing, shielding, or buffing your allies, you and your allies will receive a 25% movement speed bonus for 1.5 seconds. This passive does not solely work on yourself and your healing, shielding, or buffing must be used on an ally or allies.
Shurelya’s active ability is probably my favorite part though: it allows you and allies within a 1000 radius a 30% movement speed bonus for four seconds.
This item’s active ability gives you the option of using it to chase after opponents, run away faster, or give you the ability to kite enemies with the movement speed you gain. There may be some instances where you’ll want to go with more damage or a healing Mythic item instead, but the movement speed you and your allies gain is a big plus for my play style.
Tank
Locket of the Iron Solari (Leona, Blitzcrank, Braum, Thresh)
If you’re looking for resistance and tankiness, Locket of the Iron Solari is your best bet. This item gives you +200 health, and +30 armor and magic resistance. Its passive gives nearby allies 5 bonus armor and magic resistance and its active ability gives nearby allies a shield for 230-385 (based on target’s level), decaying over 2.5seconds. This item’s only limitation is that its effect is reduced by 75% if the target is also affected by another Locket of the Iron Solari.
This item is particularly helpful to buy for early skirmishes and may be just the thing to give you an edge in a fight. It can be used once a fight has begun to negate initial burst damage, or even at the end of a fight when your health is about to completely deplete. This is usually my go-to when I play Blitzcrank support, and I have a lot of fun using it right towards the end of a fight to surprise the enemy team with a large shield.
Turbo Chemtank (Alistar, Leona, Tahm Kench)
This item gives you +20 ability haste, +350 health, and +25 armor and magic resistance. Its passive allows you to deal 12-30 magic damage every second to enemies within 325 units, increased by 25% against minions and 150% against monsters. This passive activates for three seconds when taking or dealing damage. This item’s active allows you, for four seconds, to gain 40% bonus movement speed and ghosting when moving towards a turret, or a visible enemy within a 2000 radius. After this duration or when an enemy champion is within 225 range, you release a shockwave that slows enemy champions within 450 range by 50% for 1.5 seconds.
This item is very similar to Sunfire Aegis but is more cost-efficient and gives you an active ability on top of the passive. This tremendous speed and slow, allows you to engage with the enemy and be able to force a fight on your own terms. If you want to be tankier and also have some sort of CC ability to follow up, this item is for you.
Healer
Moonstone Renewer (Yuumi, Nami, Lulu)
This item grants you +40 ability power, +20 haste, +200 health, and +100% base mana regeneration. When affecting champions with attacks or abilities in combat, you give 70 health to the closest, most wounded ally. Each second that you spend in combat with champions increases your Heal and Shield Power by 7% (stacking up to five times). For example, let’s say you’re playing Lulu and you ult your ally Sivir while in combat. Not only would they gain some health back, but your healing would increase the longer you are in combat.
This item is ideal for champions that heal or at least directly affect their allies with abilities.
In the example above, Seraphine and Miss Fortune engage in combat with the enemy Zyra and Seraphine shields her ADC, triggering their Moonstone Renewer and allowing her healing shield power to increase as well.
Attack Damage
Prowler’s Claw (Pyke)
Choosing to go Attack Damage with your Mythic item as a support usually isn’t the best choice, but in the case of Pyke support, it is. In this scenario, you would want to purchase Prowler’s Claw over almost all of the other support Mythic items. This is because it allows you to dash in a line through the enemy champion’s location and deal 65 (+25% bonus AD) physical damage to the target and increase your damage dealt to them by 15% for the next three seconds.
This is a special instance where going an AD Mythic item as support would work out very well for you. Sometimes there are other factors that are present that will sway your choice though. For example, you could be trying out unconventional supports like Pantheon and as a result, you would want to probably go for Eclipse or another Mythic item that would best fit your champion’s kit.
Ability Power
Luden’s Tempest (Lux, Vel’Koz, Xerath)
There are also going to be times where you want to go with damage output over utility, tank, or healing. With champions like Lux, Vel’Koz, or Xerath, you might want to choose Luden’s Tempest.
This item gives you more ability power and lets you deal 100 (+10% AP) additional magic damage to an enemy and launches orbs at up to three other enemies within 600 units. It also grants you a 15% bonus movement speed for two seconds once the orbs land. For AP supports that want to help deal as much damage as possible, Luden’s Tempest is a great alternative to other support Mythic items.
Liandry’s Anguish (Zyra, Vel’Koz, Swain)
Another support Mythic item for champions that don’t necessarily fit into the other categories is Liandry’s Anguish. This item’s unique passive allows your abilities to burn enemies, causing them to take 60 (+6% AP, +4% target’s maximum health) total magic damage over four seconds. It also allows you to deal 0-12% (based on the target’s bonus health) bonus magic damage against all enemies. This Liandry’s “burn” is useful for champions such as Zyra, Vel’Koz, and Swain where you want to deal dangerous damage after hitting the enemies with your abilities. For these supports that don’t explicitly have healing or shielding abilities for their ADC, Luden’s Tempest or Liandry’s Anguish are good second choices for your Mythic item.
Whether you want the utility of a Mythic item like Everfrost or a healing item such as Moonstone Renewer, there are many different options available for you when playing support. There are always going to be different situations where you maybe want more mobility or tankiness, and so your choice for each game may differ as well. I hope that after reading this though, you have a clearer sense of what some of the Mythic items do and are ready to try them out on Summoner’s Rift.
Good luck and have fun everyone!
