Which supports are the best in the current meta?

An article regarding supports with the help of some top supports worldwide in League of Legends.
Today, in this article we will talk about supports! Supports are, according to statistics of the most recent survey done on Reddit, one of the less appreciated with only 21.95% of the users enjoying playing it. It is true that the support role isn't the one that will get all the kills, get fed and carry the game but it is also true that supports have a great importance in what concerns commanding your team and have a great involvement in the game.
Basically, a support is a champion that grants protection to the team in the majority of the cases - can also initiate some fights sometimes - commands the team with important decisions such as getting dragons/nashors, holds the team together and is responsible for placing wards throughout the entire game and getting support items.
In this article I will show you what the top supports worldwide that I could reach think of the current supports in the current meta and how they rate them.
First of all I would like to thank the players that helped me and give a little description on each:
- The support player for CLG.eu, Krepo, that lanes with Yellowpete and gives a great stream for anyone who is interested in having a great time not only learning but also having fun.
- nRated, the ex-support of the french team aAa (that recently split), knows a lot about the current game and is an awesome person previously in a great team that will certainly be in the top places in the future.
- Fnatic Mellisan who is currently in Korea with his team and is a great person, is always looking to help other summoners and is very important in his team with his awesome presence.
- Spellsy, a 2300 ELO player that only plays support, playing currently on Ordinance Gaming that got pretty known by Reddit due to his stream in which he teaches a lot so that the viewers can learn more about the support role.
- Team SoloMid's support as well, Xpecial has a pretty busy life but is a very calm, relaxed and cool person and I personally enjoy watching his stream a lot.
- Also, last but not least Xinec from Absolute Legends that does not consider himself one of the top supports worldwide but also helped me with this article.
Enough with the presentations I will show you the tier lists of these players:
(Xpecial's tier list is ordered from left to right, as well as up and down)
Let's take some conclusions about the decisions of these players:
Basically, Krepo, nRated and Spellsy (Xinec also) rate Soraka as the best support in the current meta while Xpecial and Mellisan consider Janna the best support at the moment.
I also asked the pros to tell me what they think of each support chosen by them in a quick statement. Below you can find their exact statements:
Soraka
"OP heals, really strong armor buffs and OP silence." - Krepo
"Gives a lot of tankyness, an infinite mana pool, a constant healing, and an interrupt for spells like Warwick’s ult, Galio’s ult, etc." - nRated
"Best sustaining support, also very nice active defense with her passive aura and the insane armor boost from W.Downside is that she pretty slow and has no real damage, which makes her only useful in certain combos, like Corki/Graves/Urgot. "- Mellisan
"Soraka is a great support, and while you have to treat her lane phase a little carefully, she really shines mid game and is very strong overall." - Spellsy
"Bruiser meta. Impossible to kill full bruiser team with a good soraka. Armor + Big heals + Iron solari+ magic resist from passive = OP." - Xinec
Janna
"Good amount of CC, De-initiate, AD steroid "- Krepo
"Provides best protection of all supports, a shield against harass, has 3 different CC’s and her passive gives movement speed." - nRated
"Most utility and fits very good into almost any combo. Very effective in both defensive and offensive play. Her very high movement speed also keeps her really safe when going for oracles." - Mellisan
"While Janna has been nerfed quite a bit, she may no longer be a 1st pick always, but is still a great support. Her ultimate and CC is so great for high level play, as it makes her the best protector support around." - Spellsy
Alistar
"Combo, tankyness and teamfight presence." - Krepo
"Very good utility and offers a lot for offensive gameplay, especially in the early game, also very nice sustain with his heal.
Downside, he is melee and is unlikely to escape massive slows." - Mellisan
"Alistar offers a very versatile play, he can be aggressive, spamming W-Q and trying to land kills. Or, he cna play passive, maxing E and giving tons of sustain and then transitioning a very protective role late game. He is a nice all around pick, however, a bir more risky than something like Taric." - Spellsy
Taric
"Has a lot of burst, gives armor, has the biggest heal output in fight, has a single target stun, good roamer." - nRated
"Decent utility with the stun, very nice burst with the Ultimate and Shatter. Shatter also offers a nice aura against physical heavy teams. Very effective in bursting combos on bottom lane, but you have to pick between more burst or more sustain (Q vs.W)." - Mellisan
"While Taric is very much underrated, he is great because he offers a concrete, targeted, ranged stun as well as providing a ton of raw stats with his W and R. Not to mention an awesome lane phase." - Spellsy
Leona
"Good for kill lanes." - Krepo
"Strongest burst of all supports, really tanky, best roamer of all supports but not protection and sustain." - nRated
Lulu
"The strongest harass support, can break a lot of CC’s with her ultimate and W, can slow, has a shield against harass and strong autoattacks in comparison to other supports." - nRated
Sona
"Decent sustain if maxing W, good harass when maxing Q and a very good CC ultimate, downside is that she needs levels to be effective, as she has no real one-point-wonder skills like most other supports." - Mellisan
"Sona is another very underrated support, but she can be very amazing if pulled off well. Her lane phase has almost completely changed from the Sona of old, as it has become much more about balancing offense and defense, opposed to before where it was pure offense; however, if you can get past the lane phase, she owns with her ultimate and a ton of auras." - Spellsy
I hope you enjoyed this article and that it helps you in choosing which support to use in certain occasions. Again, I would like to thank all the players that agreed to help me on this article and remember, Support the World!
