A Beginner's Guide to Hearthstone

A guide for newer or returning players on where to start in playing Hearthstone.

With Blizzcon having just finished and with the announcement of a new expansion it can be extremely daunting for newer or rejoining players, having 3 adventures and 3 different card packs to know where to start. There are a lot of resources out there for newer players but the problem is trying to find them or even just knowing where to start. For newer players the advice would be to complete all the easier hidden quests at the start of the game, whilst trying to focus on getting all the classes to level 10.

- Win 5 Practice Games. - 1 Classic card pack
- Complete a game in Play mode. - 1 Classic card pack
- Play 3 games in Play mode. - 100 gold
- Get any class to level 10. - 1 Classic card pack
- Disenchant a card. - 95 arcane dust
- Enter The Arena. - 1 Arena credit
- Unlock every Hero. - 100 gold
- Defeat every Expert AI Hero. - 100 gold

During this time if you do get a hero to level 10 or as you approach level 10 you will have unlocked most of the class cards, so making a deck is the next move. There are a lot of websites which have basic lists on them such as hearthstoneplayers and hearthpwn. So using one of these to create a deck is the best idea. Continue to do the quests and once you have completed them all or most of them you will have quite a lot of gold to spend. As well try and do the daily quests and don't let them build past 3 as new ones don't appear, as well there is a option to re-roll a daily quest so doing this on 40 gold quests is a good way to get more gold quests.

My advice on spending gold would be to start with buy mainly classic packs to get a starting collection, then after about 10 start alternating between the 3. But bear in mind that winning tavern brawls give classic packs, so if opening classic packs is just giving extra cards which will turn to crafting dust (You can only put 2 of a card or 1 legendary so any excess cards can be decrafted into dust). Then start opening some of the other card packs. Unless you are interested in a themed deck, if this is the case look into which cards are in the packs and then buy this.

Adventure expansions are solo adventures which reward cards for completing the challenges in each wing. If you are looking to buy a expansion the recommend one would be Curse of Naxxramas as this gives better overall cards rather than Blackrock Mountain that has more dragon focused cards, but if you do want a dragon deck then the choice is yours. With the latest adventure League of Explorers not out yet this isn't a option, but you should leave this last as it will take time for the better decks from these cards to be made.
But if you were going to spend gold then saving up for the Naxxramas quarters would be the first choice again, but do spend the 700 gold on the first wing of Blackrock Mountain as Emperor Thaurissan is the reward and he is a extremely powerful card.

Again as you open card packs and get a larger collection keep on looking at the sites to try and find decks that look fun to play, as there are a lot of budget decks out there. After a few seasons you will most likely have some dust from duplicate cards, the ranked rewards or by playing some arenas. When you do have some dust below is a list of recommend cards to craft, note that this list is very dependent on the style of deck that you wish to play

- Piloted Shredder
- Big Game Hunter
- Harvest Golem
- Dr. Boom
- Knife Juggler

After a few more seasons you will start to get a larger set of cards, from here the best advice would be to look at whats relevant in the meta to attempt to climb to get a reward chest, the goals are rank 15, 10, 5 and legend for the different reward chests. Also try and set yourself a goal to reach a higher rank each season as the game is more fun with personal challenges. Here is a great article with some pointers on how to climb in hearthstone.

Thank you for reading and I hope you will enjoy playing hearthstone.
