A Guide to Rocket Jumping in Overwatch

Guide on how to perform a rocket jump with Soldier 76, Zarya, and Pharah

Positioning is very important in Overwatch. In this guide, we will cover how to reach previously inaccessible areas, which may give you an advantage or take the enemy by surprise, by consistently performing Rocket Jumping with Soldier 76, Pharah and Zarya.

Soldier 76

Soldier excels at harassing the enemy from medium to long range, especially from a high area. For this reason, to play Soldier at his full potential you need to quickly gain an advantageous position, sometimes by making use of his rocket jump.

In order to perform this boosted jump, you need to aim at your feet and shoot the rocket and jump at the exact same time. The rocket has travel time, so what actually happens is that you jump first and a few moments later the rocket explodes and launches you even higher. You can also perform the rocket jump by pressing the space bar first and then shooting, but you don't gain any additional distance by doing it this way and you can mess up the timing. Above all, make sure you don't shoot the rocket first because then you won't be able to jump.

Properly timed rocket jump.

You can't shoot your rocket while sprinting, so, in order to cover the most ground, you need to start running immediately after you jump. A regular sprinting jump will cover approximately 8 meters, but a rocket jump can cover up to 12 meters!

Zarya

Obviously, Zarya doesn't have rockets, but her right click will do the job. By power jumping with Zarya, you will gain impressive mobility for a tank without movement abilities. To perform this jump, you need to aim at the ground and right click and jump at the exact same time, just like Soldier 76.

You can escape immediate danger by quickly getting onto the high ground.

Proof of concept, Zarya won't be very useful up there.

As a curiosity, Zarya can even perform an even greater jump by using two bombs at the same time. This technique is extremely slow and extremely hard to master, so it is very unlikely you will ever use it in competitive play, but it is worth knowing. To perform it, you need to shoot a bomb straight into the sky and then jump and right click into the ground, just as the previous one is landing. You can see Poko doing it in this clip without batting an eye.

Pharah

Pharah can already reach anywhere she pleases, but good fuel management is key for a superior Pharah play. By rocket jumping, you will reach far higher than by using Jump Jet alone, so you don't have to waste any Hover Jet. You can perform this rocket jump in the exact same fashion, by shooting the ground and shifting at the same time.

By the time you have vision of the enemies, you are out of fuel.

This way, you have plenty of fuel left.

Conclusion

With this knowledge, you should be able to improve your positioning game. Now you just have to experiment and explore each map to find the best places to use this technique. I hope you find it useful!
